Some serious contenders since this thread was made. Jack Watts, Tom Scully, Jonathan Patton, Tom Boyd and Paddy McCartin.

There should also be a rule that #1 picks before 1994 don't count, recruiting wasn't quote there yet.

Gotta be Hodge
Goddard (StK) for me
If Hodge was given untill this year to show form..Goddard deserves at least untill next year.
Bizarre to know these posts were serious back then.

Tom Boyd?

Delivered us a premiership. Worth 2 x 1st rounders

It is McCartin and it isn’t close. Barely showed anything pre injuries.

have to agree.

Injuries: Patton showed a bit before his knees. Boyd obviously could play.
Serviceable but not guns: Watts + Scully

McCartin had issues even before he started in the AFL. puzzling pick.

I remember Christian Petracca was heavily touted as the #1 pick that year, and was clearly the best performed player of his age group. St Kilda settling on McCartin as their #1 pick came as a shock.

What an absolute disaster. Just disgustingly bad recruiting.

Tom Boyd isn't the greatest player, but he performed in the finals when it counted and got the dogs their premiership. That alone should take him out the discussion.

Objectively Tom Boyd, followed by Cam Rayner. Always get a good laugh when a nuffie says Tom Boyds draft position was justified because of the GF. He was in the same category as Cain Ackland

Boyd and Rayner worse than McCartin?

Cam has been serviceable and stood up in moments during the last two finals series.

Boyd delivered the Dogs a flag.

Can anybody remember a McCartin highlight? Or great performance?

The dude is fishing. No one with more than single digit IQ would truly believe those two are anywhere near the worst

Tom Boyd probably worse a mention from recent history considering GWS got 9 games out of him. Before trading him for not alot in the end...

Became a premiership hero at the dogs. But those 52 games would be a pretty desastrious career for a no. 1 pick under any other circumstances...

McCartin played enough to show he was a spud before retiring

Make no mistake, if he was not dating Billy Brownless daughter the media wouldn't have gone so soft on him
