Still hard to look past Melbourne 2013. Carlton this year at least have had games that they could defend. Brisbane 2016 had a pretty good offence even if they leaked points on the regular. And it feels harsh to pick on early GC/GWS as half their side (and often more) were rookies.

If you were to look at one of Melbourne's spoon sides, shouldn't 08 be there rather than 09?

Fremantle in 2001 were pretty bloody bad.
True enough. Only Greater Western Sydney in 2013 (an acquaintance of mine called them to his perpetual regret “Gay (expletive) Society”) have remained winless equally far into a season since Fitzroy in 1964 lost all eighteen games.

However, although they had only one close shave, replicating the last three actually winless teams in narrowly losing against Carlton, the 2001 Dockers were not losing nearly so badly as the teams mentioned here, or the 2000 Saints, or the 2008 Eagles. Only three of their opening 0–17 run were lost by over fifty points, and none of those until Round 11 against the Kangaroos, by which time the Dockers were no doubt exceedingly frustrated and had already suffered a change of coach. In fact, football writers during the 2001 season noted that the Dockers were actually playing better than West Australian rival West Coast (who were 3–14 and finished 5–17, but had a worse percentage than the 0–17 and 2–20 Dockers).

I agree for sure. By all criteria, except points scored, the Demons were worse in 2008 than in 2009.

However, it surprises me that St. Kilda in 2000 is overlooked completely here. At the beginning of the 2000 season the Saints were tipped as likely finalists despite a dreadful collapse from 7–3 to 9–12 in 1999, and a similar collapse in 1998. Yet, as it turned out the Saints, unable to put pressure on any opponent it seemed, finished dead last by four and a half games with the second-worst win/loss record in the AFL between 1997 and 2010 (2–19–1). With global warming, Docklands and two new clubs combining together to thin the talent spread, the appalling performances of the 2000 Saints — which reached a nadir when they, making zero effort, scored just 4-5 (29) in good conditions against an inept West Coast team — might be more easily overlooked as four teams since 2011 have had worse records. Yet, for disappointment, the 2000 Saints would outdo any of the teams discussed here.

As for West Coast themselves, the 2008 Eagles — two seasons after winning a premiership but affected by the Ben Cousins drug scandal — were pretty awful. I recently watched the Adelaide Crows play perhaps their worst-ever AFL performance in giving that 2008 Eagle team one of only four wins for the season. West Coast showed no special skill and yet won by fifty points, seven more than the combined margin of their other three victories that season. Their percentage of 65.88 — though better than Melbourne’s that season — was worse than any AFL team between 1998 and 2007.

I think if you were going to use an example from 2004, you'd have to go with Richmond though (same wins, less percentage).
If you remember the season, Hawthorn were the worst by a long way.

Hawks had 2 wins for the year until the Bulldogs round 19 and Richmond round 21 tanked against the Hawks so they could remain under the win limit to receive priority picks.

Hawthorn couldn’t kick 100 points all season but managed in those 2 games.

A sure case of the pot calling the kettle black.

Gold Coast started off well but have just got worse and worse as the seasons progressed so IMO they are the worst team. Being done today by 40 plus points - IMO the GC experiment has failed miserably - perhaps fold them and bring in a Tassie team instead would be better possibly??

Yeah sure when Dog and Tiger supporters call Melbourne out for tanking 2009, because they clearly tanked against the Hawks in 2004
