In the context of the sheer number of nepo babies in the AFL media, you can't deny that having Tony Jones as a father isn't a massive leg up.

Sarah Jones got a Channel 7 work experience gig at 17, and a Fox Footy reporter gig at 19 FFS. I do not blame her for walking through an open door, but the door wouldn't be open if her father wasn't a big-name AFL journo.

Yes, they did an undergrad in journalism, but without that family connection, I doubt the vast majority of them get the job they have.
wtf are you on about? :drunk::rolleyes::drunk:

No offence but that is a terrible example. He would be getting paid nothing for that gig and the volume of labour he does in recovering source material is incredible.
Not only for Richmond but for the whole sport in general. His youtube channel is amazing

As for Xander, he's just another head on the TV for me to ignore.

What exactly is the point of this thread?

Very few comments of Xander's actual journalism and presentation skills, which I happen to find him quite good at.
There is limited dispute of that. He is not a uniquely good presenter though. Any of us who have been in amateur media know this.

And his “journalism”, what is this? How do you think he met his contacts?

I think his own merits are reasonable, getting into Uni, school captain at Melbourne Grammar, 1st 11 cricket .
Having said that, i don't understand how Eddie or Hutchie are powerbrokers or whatever they are.

Yesterday, 3AW boundary rider Jacqui Reed referenced Xander's presence in the Collingwood rooms after the ANZAC Day match by saying he looks just like his old man. My immediate thought was poor bloke looking like Eddie.
Looks like Darcy Moore too.

I take it all back, didn't realise he was first XI in cricket.

With the plethora of universities around, and the very low entry requirements to get into a number of courses, this by no way is an achievement.

You've got to cut people some slack. They were just starting to feel like they'd finally gotten rid of Eddie everywhere and then he grew another head like the f-ing Hydra so now it's a grieving process.

A very punchable head too.

Xander is a father-son success story
Articulate and doesn’t stumble over words that much. Also he’s 22 years old or thereabouts.. sometimes nepotism is good, he’s being mentored or guided by the best host/presenter in the business from 1994-2004 along with Bruce and Dennis. He won’t get overexposed for a few good years yet, part of learning from his fathers footsteps
I also quite like Xander over Alex as a bit of a meme. Eddies a legend of broadcasting by the way, he should and is seemingly going into the less is more mode. Let Xander cook as Gen Z would say

There wouldn't be an industry where people in some form don't get a leg up due to family connections. Can't see why media would be any different Many kids want to follow in their parent's footsteps. There have been a few father-son drafts who got in on their name and were not up to it

There is a difference between “some leg up” and basically a closed shop.
