On player development the FA should limit the number of loans out to help prevent the stockpiling issue. If clubs could only loan out 6-8 u23 players I think you'd find a lot more championship or league one clubs try and arrange deals to bring in young plays from top academies on permanent deals (with buyback clauses).

Right now the club getting the loanee has no long term gain out of developing a player because he is gone in a year. The only thing they get is a reputation of being a good club to loan players to which is shit. The only problem with this idea is the lower league clubs not having the funds for the initial transfer fee

Good article on football.london about Brentford shutting down their academy and their whole set up. Worth a read. Wouldn't be the worst idea for QPR to do the same thing with Fulham and Chelsea on their door step and Spurs and Arsenal ready to jump in on any talent in their catchment as well

It all depends. QPR made 10m when Liverpool sold Sterling to City for instance. Also, is Fulham any bigger than QPR?

In terms of youth setup yes they're a lot more established.

The cost of running an academy is quite high though. One good sale every 2-4 years would cover costs but have they been achieving that level?

Depends, what are the ongoing costs for an academy?

Cheers for that, it was a really good read. Rasmus is one of the best minds in football. If a bigger club ever got him as their CEO or head of football, he'd be on par with Monchi.

I'm unsure if it's something that will translate into success higher up the football pyramid than where Brentford are tbh

Out of interest how many current France national team members went through there?

Mbappe, Henry, Gallas, Ben Arfa, Benatia, Matuidi and Giroud are the notable ones who I can remember.

He's the sort of guy who can adapt. I think if he had more money to play with then he'd get even better results.

france have about 10 or so set ups around france's regions that are designed to be the same as clairefontaine. clairefontaine gets the best 13-15 year olds from paris so that boosts the profile quite a bit. with how academies are set up at club level in england, i'd love to see the fa try and convince utd, city, chelsea, liverpool, spurs, arsenal etc to give up their best 13-15 year olds and put them in the hands of the fa.

And in news that no body gives two tosses about, we lost to Oldham in the Checkatrade Trophy. Despite leading 1-0, and playing Robert Huth, we lost 4-2. Disgraceful.

Chelsea are the last academy side left. They will be playing Oxford United in the Quarters next week.

It should be noted that our U23s were on a 19 game undefeated streak up until this game.

Man City have 23 players on loan..

Which is my point. Far too many and these kids don't develop as well as they would if they went to a club who owned them even if with a clause in it because they have some long term benefit out of it

Clubs just need to choose the right loan for their players. No point sending a kid somewhere they don't play. Choose the right club, the right manager and loans can be fantastic.

Much better than leaving kids stagnating in U23's.

Maybe a national academy could be established like what France have done with Clairefontaine? French football are nailing youf development.
The French nail youf development because their clubs dont spend 10s of millions of pounds on dross. They actually give their academy and younger players an opportunity in the first team to develop. In the PL clubs are too worried about the risk that might have on their PL status or on their pursuit for European places so theyre more gun shy when it comes to giving academy prospects a serious opportunity. That's going to have to change soon with this current generation of Englands teenagers being so damn good, otherwise we could see a lot moe Jadon Sancho type scenarios where the best youth heads abroad to get an opportunity.

I know that Ajax went hard for Marcus Edwards from us and I'm pretty sure anohter mainland club did so for someone like Phil Foden to prove that the English youf was good enough and so the English clubs would stop buying the youf from other countries who have had ~100 top flight appearances at the same time as their English counterparts are still languishing in the PL2.

Should be refined by age. Wind the years back and you'd have 4000+ minutes with Giggs and Scholes in the twilight but under this definition it'd qualify.
Certainly don't think we've been great with young players this season. Only Winks has got a shot so far.

Arse being in Europa has been better in that regard. Nelson, AMN, Reine-Adelaide, Eddie (can't spell his last name), Willock....
