Thought it might be a good idea to have a thread about all our young guns instead of them being posted individually around the place.
most people know about Walker, murphy, betts, simpson, bentick etc. because they have had a good crack at AFL level.

I was wondering about kennedy, bower, hartlett, russell, blackwell and that crew. some info. about them and an opinion from those who follow VFL and know more than me would be great. (feel free to add anymore to that list)

Hopefully people can excape the negative threads and have something to look forward to here in the near future.:thumbsu:

I thought blackwells first game was good considering what happened today. Didnt come one till the end of the first. He looked poised and didnt panick and was able to hit targets. Also put a few tackles on that stuck rather than were broken.

Our tackling and defensive game is atrocious at the moment. Also turnovers, but theres nothing more demoralising than seeing tackles get broken all the time.

I agree, i thought blackwell did well considering the game time he was given. good skills from what i saw and i also liked his tackling
I thought Kenedy didn't look very confident though. if he picked up the ball he would panic and just shovel out a handball to no one in particular. saw him do one good chest mark then pass to Fev, thats about it:( .

good thread. whilst we are in a very dark patch, and will continue to be for some time yet, its good to see the arrival of some promising kids over the last few years.

kennedy-looks a very good prospect. 1st and 3rd games not so good, 2nd game promising. i suspect he may take a while to come on, but when he does, it will be worth it. we must be patient.

Bower-injured now and out for about 5 weeks. a shame because at the rate we are going, and how he was performing in the reserves, he would have got a senior call up sooner than first expected. another player who we will need to be patient with, he looks the goods. is still light on but has a big frame. will put on weight steadily over the next few years and will be huge. provides great run out of defense and has good skills. just what we need-an attacking half back.

hartlett-really excited about this kid. really strong, great skills, his long kicking a real treat to watch. will also be very big and very good. capable of playing forward and back, but i think we will ned him down back more in the future than up forward. a real shame he is injured now as he would DEFINITELY be getting a game in the seniors. has had a bad run with injuries so far and hopefully he can come back soon and perfor well.

russell-i dont want this to come across in a nengative way, but i think we could have done better with pick 9. russell will be a good player, dont get me wrong, but i think we could have done better. he will never be a standout performer, just a quiet achiever who doesnt fuss much. has pace, endurance and skills. is solid but still needs to grow a bit. mainly a midfielder, but last year learnt how to be a defender and did well. i hope he can prove me wrong when he gets more of a run.

blackwell-very small and very light. good disposal and a good brain. not the fastest player around. played today and did ok, was one of the only players who looked interested. he and bentick are similar players, very in and under, who are willing to put their bodies on the line for the team. needs much more time but will be a very good player. hopefully he can keep his spot in the team for the majority of this season.

hope this helps. anyone else you want information on?

Kennedy didnt play well today, might have been because of the amount of pressure we were under. Did one kick into the 50 that was straight to a st kilda player and generally didnt get much of it. To be fair though the ball wasn't getting brought inside 50 and when it was there was enourmous pressure.

The saints were good though, i thought murphy and blackwell are 2 of the few players who didn't panick when under pressure. Saddington, deluca, stevens various players including kennedy were choking under the saints pressure today.

Stanton, please stick to the topic of the thread. if you have other thoughts on the game, visit the gameday board, or start another thread. this thread is for the discussion of carltons younger kids and their development.

I was talking about murphy, blackwell and kennedy, i can give a context by comparing murphy and blackwells decisionmaking skills imo being better than players such as saddington, deluca.

no worries. harts will be a great addition to the club. others worth talking about who havent been mentioned in this thread are fisher, thornton, waite, raso, and the rookies.

Well Waite was taken off with a knee injury and could be out for a while. Jackson best on ground bullants reserves, Raso played cricket for morningtons 3rds and scored 41 opening the batting but he hasnt had a game in the bullants or appeared to be close to getting one. He might be captaining our auskick side?

raso has been playing for the bullants reserves. has not done much as of yet but may turn out ok. is not a kpp and if anything will be a tall winger. loves to take a big grab and his skills are ok. has a hell of a long way to go. was touted as a first round pick this year, so must have something, but he needs to show it. sounds as if attitude may be a bit of a problem as well. real long term project. wont see him around i wouldnt have thought.

also, forgot about jakey edwards as another one who is worth talking about.

i wasn't expecting you to say thornton. from what i've heard (not that i would know) is that he wasn't too crash hot. i really like his game Vs Essendon though, took some good marks in the backline.

is Raso the one who was picked up from Haileybury when he was quite young?whats happening with him? people have been negative of his attitude. but i'm liking your positivity.

its unfortunate Fisher is out for a while, i really like the marks he takes.

hopefully Waite's injury today isnt too serious because he is a vital young player also.

Raso i dont really think he will make it. Apparently attitude not great and playing lower grade cricket for mornington in summer shows his lack of application i think. He did have glandular tho. I think thornton is our best defender, other than lance.

Looks like it is a medial ligament. If it is a Grade 2 tear will be 4-5 weeks, if it is a Grade 3 tear will be 6-8 weeks. Looks like Kennedy will be getting plenty of game time in the next 4-6 weeks in the absence of Waite and Fisher. I would imagine Setanta will probably get another call up to add some height to the forward line. Such a shame that Hartlett is injured, he would have slotted in nicely.
