Probably not that interesting but I noticed that Taylor Walker was our youngest playing footballer at the moment and wondered how he compared to other young playing footballers in the league. I did a bit of looking around and it looks to me that currently, he is the tenth youngest player to have played a match. The top ten is:

Jack Ziebell - 18 years 3 months
Ryan Schoenmakers - 18 years 5 months
Hamish Hartlett - 18 years 8 months
Andrew Browne - 18 years, 9 months
Jamie Bennell - 18 years 10 months
Daniel Rich - 18 years 10 months
Michael Hurley - 18 years 11 months
Nicholas Suban - 18 years 11 months
Stephen Hill - 19 years 0 months
Taylor Walker - 19 years 0 months

Very impressive result by Ziebell there. Browne is interesting to me, a 204cm ruckman already having played AFL who is only 18 years old and already weighs over 100kg, that's some serious bulk!

But I'm not used to seeing the Crows with playing youngsters in the youngest echelon of the competition so, good signs I guess! :thumbsu:

Agreed, very good signs. For mine the most impressive thing about Tex is what he has been able to show in such a short time, in such a difficult role. Far easier IMO for a young player to slot into the midfield or across half back and then develop. We expect a lot of Tex and should remember he is just turned 19, played 6 games and is trying to hold down a key forward position in a side thats moving the ball slowly.

Tough gig.

You'd have to say, looking at that top 10, that's a pretty heady list. Goes to show, kids that young simply don't debut unless they are special talents.

Walker has shown some very promising signs, but I'm still a little disappointing at his lack of contesting the ball. All the other stuff I can live with but I'd like to see that improve.

From that list a few players are doing better than young tex, however, as mentioned, Taylor is playing a tough position in a team that finds it hard to get the ball down to him. What impresses me is that hes had a large number of shots at goal, and once he calms down, he can nail them more often because we all know how good set shot he is.

For such a youngun Ziebell impresses me the most at this stage, desperately wanted him to slip to 10 on draft day but got snapped up at 9. Chances are we wouldn't have taken him anyway because Davis was our number 2 choice after Watts.

There are some impressive youngsters in that list, lets hope Walker becomes the best of them :p Even though Hill's talent is somewhat frightening

Not too many talls playing much on that list. Hurley is there (though he's only played one match) and Schoenmakers (who has also played one match), and of course Browne is a massive lump of clay moulded into a man, but basically Walker is the only one playing each week. So far anyway.

There is some serious talent on that list.

If there are any bored statistitions out there ;) it would be good to know how much time those on that list have spent on the ground compared to Tex, and also how many times Tex has hit the post this year out of his 11 behinds? If he had been more accurate and kicked lets say 4 more goals, he would have 13 which is more than Medhurst, Mooney, Milne (12) Koschitzke, Pavlich (11), Hall, Lloyd, B.Johnson, L.Davis (10), Lynch, Richardson, Chapman (9). I know it is all hypothetical but condsidering the deliver he has had, i don't think he is doing that badly.

Rich already has an AFL body. He is a man-boy!

8 teams have someone younger playing (/played) AFL footy, that makes us fairly average i would've thought :P

Age is a rubbish stat (in terms of youngest/oldest teams/players etc) in my humble opinion. Except in that is loosely correlated to experience.

Walker is top 10 in the AFL for shots at goal (has had 4 more than porpy).

Good sign, given a few of those were posters and a few of those were nervous shots he will likely slot when he grows in confidence.

All in 3% game time.

Yeah, the blokes going to be a goal scoring machine in the future I feel, the blokes been playing average at best with minimal game time and yet still he's racked up over 3 scoring shots a match and is yet to go a match without at least 1 goal. Whether he plays out the whole year in the AFL or not, we certainly have a talent on our hands.

Agree, was kinda half hoping he'd fall to our #10 pick, not at all disapointed with Davis though, if our recruitment department are to be trusted in how much they rate him, we have an absolute gun on our hands.

We also have 3 of the 11 oldest players in the comp. Just another rubbish stat for you :p.

Everyone knows stats can be used to prove any agenda you want, but i still love them :D.

This post is possibly 100% accurate ;).

Dangerfield is not far off that list either :thumbsu::thumbsu:

Danger is two months older, Witty Remark - so he would fit very high on that list when he debuted last year :thumbsu:

What did Rowy say about young Jimmy Sellar on 5aa?

I'm just interested, i'm not going to base my opinion of him on that.

He said that he was attacking the ball with more intensity and that he was looking stronger (but that he wasn't strong enough yet for AFL footy). He said he is jumping high in the ruck, that he is doing alright down forward and that they have lots of confidence in his ability to go down back.

Seemed like a beat-up to me but I guess it's better than "he looked Crap, Cornsey".

Walker was the 22nd youngest player to debut for the Crows.

Hart, Picioane and Roo all debuted as 17 year olds. Picioane also played his last game for the Crows as a 17 year old!

Others to debut younger than Walker (in age from youngest up) were Skipworth, Sanderson, Johnson, Golding, Dangerfield, Bone, McGregor, Gilligan, Ross, David Gallagher, Reilly, Watts, McLeod, Knights, Stenglein, Edwards, van Berlo and Eccles.

All of which goes to show that debuting at a young age might mean you turn out to be a champion. Or not.

He's had 3 1/2 pre-seasons, how long does it take to improve your strength?

Sounds like a Toby Thurstans style introduction to the AFL.

To be honest it sounded more to me like Rowe was trying not to say anything bad about a Glenelg player.

He did say that Sellar is "starting to show some real rapid development" or something to that effect - in other words, "sure he's been disappointing before but he may not be some time soon". Certainly the type of throwaway statement someone makes when they want to appear positive without overcommitting themselves.

Never going to see that again, now that the AFL has changed the minimum draft age. As of 2009, players must turn 18 by the end of the year in which they are drafted - this year is the last in which clubs will have the opportunity to play a 17yo.

If we were to be optimistic rather than pesimistic Sellar is now being named as CHF in Glenelg's league side whereas last year he was at times on the bench in the ressies, he must be showing signs...surely???
