Yeah, good chance of Tanner being available then. Hopefully you finish with a fairly late pick, but I could see him going anywhere in the 10-25 range. Will probably be fighting it out with the likes of Jaksch, McBean and Clurey in that range.

He is a little Ted Richards like. I've compared him more to Chris Tarrant, he is a very good spoiler and seems to read the play well. But maybe not the most exciting player with ball in hand, but capable at least. I think he would be an excellent fit for Sydney, but maybe a little too similar to what you already have. But having said that, he could fit in at FB which would allow Grundy to play against the second or third tall forward and zone off, which he is maybe better suited to.

I don't think Sydney could go wrong with any of Smith, Clurey or Jaksch.

I've been sick for the last week, and what do you do when you're sick? Update your draft of course. :)

There have been changes in all four rounds, plus I added a fifth round because I had a heap of left over players.

Great work Chris! And I hope the draft pretty much works out that way for Melbourne! Although I'm not as excited by Plowman as prehaps others are, particularly given Melbournes needs.

If we get Viney in the 2nd round and Toumpas at 3 I'd love to see us roll the dice with Stringer. I mean worst case he becomes an aggressive powerful marking 3rd tall (in the mould of Jack Darling) along side Watts and Clark, knowing we already have Viney, Toumpas and potentially Garlett as you suggest.

Chris, Todd McKay at 86 is the steal of the draft. Saw him last week and he has already got an afl body.

I agree. He wouldn't even get close to that if he had have been fully fit this year and played for South Australia. Admittedly, I've been wrong about a couple of similar SA kids in the past - but McKay is more than just a solid player.

If the draft went down as I have it, there would be a few potential bargains - Ramsay, Gleeson, McKay, Heavyside, Marsh and O'Meara. Not to mention some of the KPPs like Walshe, Porter and Gregory. Not to say everyone will end up a player, but I think there will be a few more late round and rookie picks who have good careers this year.

Hi Chris,
Don't know if you can answer this yet, but I was interested in your opinion in what type of draft next year will be. This year is obviously dominated by midfielders. Is next year shaping up similar, or is it more of a bit of everything type of draft?

Probably a little early. This far out, it's always the midfielders who are impressing anyway. But it's looking like a fairly even draft. There appear to be a couple of top line KPFs - Boyd might be getting all the attention, but Cam Conlon is just as good in my opinion. One of my favourites is Clayton McCartney from Dandenong - has a bit of Travis Varcoe to him, I really like the look of him. And there are a few other small forwards/midfielders who look the goods. While I just have this feeling about Isaiah Miller becoming a quality defender. So they're my basic thoughts about the Victorians.

In terms of SA talent, it looks to be another good year. Again people might be talking about Jesse Aish, but I would have him level with Luke Dunstan and only just ahead of Trent Dumont - so that's three top line midfielders, and big midfielders at that. While Darcy Hourigan is one of the best tall forwards to come out of SA in some time.

So yeah, it looks to be a fairly even draft.

I guess you don't want to make it about 2013 too much, but surely Billings has to be in contention for the no.1 pick?

Fantastic skills and even better footy brain, even if he's small.

I would LOVE to be able to get Wines in to the Carlton team with #11 !!!! We need a big bodied inside mid, and he sounds PERFECT !!!!!

My question is, who would be better between Wines and Caddy considering there is a fair amount of discussion towards Carlton being in a pretty good position to trade for Caddy (plus possibly Toy) using #11. It's pretty obvious that Caddy would be more likely to have an instant effect to the team giving his extra 2 years of development, but would Wines be the better long-term prospect ???

There is a long way to go still, but Billings should be pushing for a pretty high spot next year - whether it's #1 or #10. Lots to like about him. A full season in the midfield (and maybe a little growth spurt) would definitely help.

I've been following the different draft threads on all the boards, and one thing I've noticed, is that everyone wants Oliver Wines. As I said in my little write up for him, I'm a big fan and I have been seen seeing him live in Round 2 this year. But, I do think he is somewhat overrated. Versatility wise, he looks quite limited - he can obviously play as an inside midfielder, and might have some success across half forward. But I'm not sure what other roles he'd be successful in - ideally he wont need to play any other roles, but it always helps. And his kicking is not elite by any means, it's probably best described as 'solid'. But he can get under the ball a bit, and sometimes he is rushed in his decision making.

Best case, I think he'll be similar to Callan Ward. Worst case, Rhys Palmer - which admittedly, isn't that bad. But the way he is being talked up, you'd think he was a Trent Cotchin or Dustin Martin. But he'll never be that type of player.

As for Caddy, I liked him as a junior. But haven't followed him a great deal since. Guess it would depend on the deal, and where Carlton rated him prior to his draft. From memory, I had him around the 8-12 range. So fairly similar to Oliver Wines. So who would I take? Flip a coin. Although new is always better. ;)

Like Chris I think Wines is a little overrated and on a Richmond forum I've put him down as my slider (15-20). I think Caddy/Wines are a similar type level. At least by trading for Caddy you can guarantee getting him where as draft night is luck of the draw.

I think Wines played a good game in the Championships against Vic metro which made him noticed by the masses. You would have a better idea of if that was a better or worse game for him ect. But i think he was in the best that day.

This is why i think peopel want him so badly

Chris please refrain from giving any hyped praise for Trent dumont, in fact sweep him under a rug for a year away from prying eyes ;)

Chris, I notice you've got Brisbane taking Macrae at pick 8. I've seen a few mocks and been involved in a great deal of draft chat but haven't seen his name much at all - especially not this early. What about him do you think would tempt the Lions?

I'm hoping, perhaps naively, that Stringer will fall to us. Seems exactly the type we could use.

I could ignore Dumont completely, but I don't think it will do any good. If his performances this year are anything to go by, he'll force people to take notice eventually.

Very good chance Stringer will be available. As I posted a few pages back, I don't see Brisbane taking him. But they will likely at least have the option.

As for Macrae, it is higher than others may have him. But I think that'll change soon enough. He is admittedly a similar type of player to Jared Polec and Elliot Yeo - although, perhaps a bit more well rounded in terms of an inside game. In terms of this draft class, he'd have close to elite speed, agility, awareness and kicking skills. And Brisbane would be getting a midfielder who could genuinely be considered a game changer - and I think Brisbane need (or would at least love) that bit of extra life in their midfield.

Darcy Hourigan is a potential 60-80 goal a year forward -

He's a different type of forward to Thomas Boyd, but just as good. I'll be talking him up all of next year.

Chris, just assuming that GWS end up with Picks 1,2 and 3, which 3 players do you think they would choose?

Excluding Viney whom i'm assuming they will agree not to take .

Lachie Whitfield and Brodie Grundy would be the first two picked. I have no doubts.

The third would be interesting. Really, it should be Jimmy Toumpas. But GWS aren't in a position where they absolutely need to pick the 'best available' - especially if it's a midfielder. So, I would take Jake Stringer. They can give him the time he needs, without any pressure at all. He would be the perfect partner for Cameron and Patton up forward, and would add some serious size to their already impressive midfield.

Given their future is not dependant on whoever they take at #3 (unlike other teams without the young talent of GWS), taking Stringer would be fairly low risk/high reward.

Bingo. Thx chris.

I was thinking exactly the same thing.

Whitfield, Grundy and Stringer/Mayes would suit them ideally.

I'm a fan of Toumpas but not sure GWS need him.

I'm thinking this scenario between GWS and Melbourne:

Melb have picks 3,4,13 and 26. They need to use the luxury of getting Viney at 26. So...

Melb Picks 3 and 13 for GWS MiniDraft pick (Hogan) and pick 24...with the understanding GWS don't take Viney, ensuring Melb get him at 26.

Currently :

Melb have Picks 3, 4, 13 and 26.

Under my scenario Melb would end up with Viney, Pick 4(posibly Toumpas), Jesse Hogan and Pick 24. I think they'd be rapt with that.

And GWS get Picks 3 and 13 for Jesse Hogan and 24.

Pick 3 and 13 is far too much for the 2nd mini draft pick. If neither GWS nor GC bid then it will be something like:

Pick 3 - Toumpas
Pick 4 - Mini draft pick Hogan
Pick 13 - Enter some random name I've read on chris' mock draft
Pick 26 - Viney.

I still think Dayle Garlett is your man at #13.

Toumpas and Viney are as close to 'sure things' as you'll get through the draft. So you could afford a slightly riskier pick, especially now that you don't have to worry about Jurrah anymore. And Garlett would be a great fit, it'd be like Davey having a second chance to become the player he should have been.

Would be great to give those three a year together, and then bring in your KPF in Hogan.

You had me at hello :)

Mate, if it went like that I'd be over the moon and give us a real boost for the pre-season. I still think GC will bid though, but I can dream for just a little bit longer.
