What was your first job?

I'm currently considering what places to apply at as I need a job to fund a trip to the US I'm going on and I'm sure many of you have worked casually as a teenager at places such as McDonalds, Pizzahut, Target and so on.

What were some good/bad experiences at this place?

Would you recommend working there?

It wasn't my first job or my best job, but I spent a few years at Officeworks.

I'd go for a large retailer like Kmart over fast-food because (not that I've worked for one of the chains) just because of the smell and hygiene issues. I imagine it would be much nicer.

At a large retail store there will be a lot of shelf-stacking, possible cash register work, helping customers and that type of thing. It's really pretty simple.

Yeah I've heard that. I was considering my local Foodworks (although it's been months and they haven't contacted me).

Would you think the same about Crust?
First job was Subway 3 years ago. I'd avoid fast food places at all costs.
Same reasons as UseYourIllusion's?

Pizza Haven. $6.03 an hour or something like that.

Crap job that involved sprinting from the sink across a wet floor down a hallway and a couple of steps every time the phone rang. I'd be surprised if they were still doing that...

My concern would be that they are generally a crap environment where a majority of customers would look down on you.

Adelaide people will remember the Sizzler that was at the bottom of Glen Osmond Rd, a KFC is there now, I was a dish bitch there. It really sucked. In all likelihood your first job will be the worst job you ever have.
Sorry.
Yeah, probably. I'm just trying to avoid any places where things are really bad, e.g some old friends of mine cannot change shifts if they need to at Hoyts.

I don't know what Crust is.

My first job was actually picking fruit for a farming family. It was nice being outside when it wasn't too hot (did it over the summer holidays).

Foodworks is like a small Coles, right? I reckon working there would be alright. Just think about working in fast-food, and think about who serves you when you go to McDonalds. Do you want to be one of them? I know that sounds really snobby, and that a job is a job and a dollar is a dollar, but it is ok to go for something a little better.

One thing to say for fast-food though is a lot of places need staff at all hours so it should be easier to fit it around school, uni, and other activities. Then again, you are in Melbourne where Coles and "Safeway" are open all hours.

Nightshift at my local IGA. Stacking shelves.

I managed a Pizza Haven. I got my hand caught in the dough roller cleaning it one night. Was off work for 3 months and to this day have three huge scars down the middle three fingers of my left hand.
Are you from Adelaide? Or were you part of their ill advised ventures interstate?

No, it was a Melbourne store for me. I'll be stuffed if I can even think of one store left tbh.

Paper boy. Wheeled a trolley around the suburb on Sunday morning blowing a whistle. Made $10-20 for two hours' work, which was pretty good for an 11 year old.

Steer clear of Hungry Jacks - pack of arseholes who will do anything to save a buck on any given day. You'll be paid at award rates (or lower if you're not informed enough to know better), treated like a lump of shit and have the joy of having to chase them endlessly simply to pay you the pittance they owe you for the hours you've actually worked and they've just decided for whatever reason not to pay you for.

If fast food it must be, do ANYTHING to avoid Hungry Jacks.

It's a first job you really can't be too picky, if you earn money and end your career there without a lifelong injury or disfigurement it's been fine...

ditto. Used to hate Saturdays due to the Saturday Age - heavy.

Enjoyed selling "The Herald" @ Werribee races. Hang out near the bar - better tips

My first job was in a local computer repairs place, mainly re-installing windows, simple stuff (HDD, memory sticks, etc). I was 13 or so, the boss was a friend of dad's, and I got paid $4 an hour....Cold Hard Cash. Would work every Saturday from 8am-1pm, then sit out the back for lunch (Maccas/Pizza/KFC/etc) provided by the boss' wife. Then would usually go and play random games on customer machines in for work until dad came to get me.

Lasted 18 months before I got a 'real job'
