Just taken up golf after for years suggesting I’d play bowls over golf “when I got old”. Turn 30 next month so got there a bit sooner, but 8 weeks ago a local club started offering a free weekly clinic with one of their plus markers and a guy who was a pro.

Been a couple of weeks since those clinics finished but I’ve got my handicap (36) and have been hitting 500 balls at the range a week. Bought my own club set package, and being the all gear no idea bloke i am have also dropped a few dollars on clothing. Will engage those guys from the clinics for a bit of one on one time because unlike other sports I’ve played I’ve noticed tangible improvement with my game and I’m pretty keen now.

Shot a pretty poor, beer induced 130 having a fu** around hit with a mate at a different club last week but going to my “home club” tomorrow for a serious game (of social golf for excercise of course under restrictions, but also for handicapping purposes) so will see how I go.
Where is the home course?

If you get a chance when the border opens play Coomealla,
Best course in that region

Yeah plan to.

shot 134 today. Probably better than last week as last week I was pretty generous with myself and not taking it seriously (brought out the foot wedge a bit)

lots to work on, very poor mid range. Surprisingly driving was about average. Saved myself with some good long putts.

Enjoyable for my first dead serious round of 18 (I was just given a default max handicap without submitting cards) despite being shit

Fellow Perthians - anyone in the Perth Golf Network or Future Golf?

I play and practice quite a lot but don’t have a handicap and have never played competitively, but would like to start to play a regular weekend round. Which one do you think would be better?

Thanks

I know quite a few golfers here in Melb that are in Future Golf and like it. I think juss might be as well (in Melb).

Future Golf is fantastic value for a handicap, and free rounds at partner courses. Have a Google and see what partner courses they have in WA, to work out the value for you. They also run events, but you have to pay, and apart from their free rounds you still need to pay green fees where you want to play.

For a handicap + a bunch of rounds at some high quality, like top 100 in AUS courses, the membership is excellent value in VIC.

Lol I’m teeing off at 7.20 so I’d be doing well - but I’m thinking about packing a few cans in the cooler to take the edge off
There are blokes I know who drink at that time it’s unreal. One of them is off scratch and I’ve seen him break Par drinking about 8 cans.

Thanks mate. Say I’m just keen to play a regular round Saturday or Sunday are there set times at courses where you can put your name down and play with other future golfers?

And with the social rounds - are you expected to find other future golfers to have a round with so they can sign your card?

Social round cards can be signed by anyone with a Golflink number.

Its not really a membership for playing a weekly round at the same course, you could play their regular events, but these are pricier than probably just playing your own green fees.

FG's great value is in its handicap + bonus benefits, discounts, free rounds, X-golf free game, etc.

Well my competitive debut wasn’t one to remember.
dont even know what I shot off the stick in the end but I had about 25 points or something and played some utterly terrible golf.
Annoyingly there were flashes regularly of good golf, my approaches were excellent and most of my irons in general were pretty good but there was some utter garbage.
Enough for me to go back next week

I shot my best round ever while sinking tinnies all day haha. Most of the country courses i frequent you would find that most of the golfers who aren't at retirement age will generally drink before or during a round.

One of the courses I occasionally play at the members get stuck into some port before teeing off at first light haha.

You're better off starting off terribly then once you have your handicap and eligible to win competitions you can become a bandit and win a handful of times with your high handicap haha.

True. Tho the fact u can get out is nice yes?
Well it's nice to have the option but I haven't really taken advantage of it due to the wet weather and course condition.

It's nice that a lot of local businesses can still operate but other than that theres not much different to being in stage 4 lockdown.

I shouldn’t have been off 20, apparently when my cards were handed in to get my start up handicap, because there was some birdies and a fair few pars in there mixed with the two/three blow outs each round (there’s a tricky par five that f***s me every time I play) I was off lower than what I should be. There is potential there. I learned a lot from watching my two playing partners who are both off single figures

My local course is a complete bog at the moment. Would love to get out and practice but not much fun hitting balls when its that wet.
I used to find on a Sunday arvo you could basically choose a 6hole or more/less route across any holes and play them for fun to avoid water effected holes.

If you hit your irons well maybe play that tricky Par 5 with an iron off the tee instead. I hit a 4 iron off the 18th (390m) at my local into the wind if the tee is back. Funnily enough I par and bogey it with this approach and kill off the bad score.

I took a hybrid off the tee on the weekend and plonked it about 200m in the middle of the fairway but rather than be smart and do something like 6-iron, 7-iron to the green I tried to hit a hybrid for my second and shanked it into the scrub roughly where my drive normally ends up 😂😂
