Had some weird 9 hole rounds where I have felt that I've played badly but scored really well (under handicap). Why does this game do this to us? My driving is ok'ish, approach shots terrible and my short game is really good, covering up all of my mistakes.
I'm going to go and see the pro about my bunker shots. I'm really confident in getting the ball out and I can get up and down pretty well. I just have never been able to spin the ball out of the bunker, I'm much more of a chunker. The ball always comes out and straight but will always roll out. This isn't a huge problem I know but there's some shots where a bit of spin to check the ball would be really handy.

You guys are having a rough trot down there. I assume everyone is clamoring to secure Long Island tee times?

Aye. Been getting smashed down here/there. I dont believe LI tee time competition to be the case as its the longy members who play there, and Nash members play here/there, with a smattering of those who go both ways

48 around Hillview Classic this arvo by my lonesome. Worst round in a few weeks. There’s a hole running right along side a road and it’s a vacuum every time I’m on the tee box. Sure enough I hit a massive push into oncoming traffic and thought I was going to kill someone. It’s so dangerous. So many balls go over the fence that locals come out and walk along the road looking for them.

In the end I was proud that I just didn’t give up scoring and start whacking multiple balls like I would have done a few months ago. Finished the round with an putt for eagle that just missed to make me feel a little better.

I haven't played the course you speak of, but there are a few of those around metro Melbourne public courses that I'm suprised got passed. I'm not a super long hitter, but when I get onto one I can do a wicked slice and there's a hole at Spring park where you can easily clear the trees and hit with the traffic, and another one, the other week I was playing in Rowville and sliced one across the two lane road and onto the nature strip on the other side of the road. Genuine danger, and there has to be worse golfers than me around.

sad news down in Hobart.

Rosny Public golf course is going to get shut down in April as the local council is not renewing its lease. Been on the cards as They want to do something else in the area but haven't said what yet. Leaves only 2 courses left in Hobart and no public courses.

It was a crap course, but I played my first rounds out there because it was crap. It was in a rut and the council was funding but it is sad to see courses close. The old public golf courses are in a battle atm with biased columns in the SMH calling for every golf course to be closed not helping.

What do you mean only two courses in Hobart? Rosny is likely to put people off the game rather than bring people to it. Every members course will take green fees from the general public, might be only particular days, but a 30 min drive in any direction will get you to a 'country' course where you can just drop your money in the box and off you go. The big issue down here is how terrible Golf Tasmania/Australia are at promoting the game, especially juniors. They don't even have a page for Pennant scores, they're bloody useless.

Should have said hobart proper. though better public/cheap member courses, like the 2 Richmonds, are 20-30 mins drive, I wouldn't consider them part of Hobart suburbs like Claremont or New Town are or Rosny was. They do require a car and some time to drive to.

Rosny had its place. Like I said, I learnt to play there because it was closeby/it was public and its relaxed attitude meant the errr... more bogan golf players, played that course rather than others.

I really don't agree with this. These basic and cheap venues are vital starting points for beginner golfers and are critical to retain in major metropolitan centres.

BobbyMorri is Golf Australia even aware that it's shutting? This would be a good issue to get in front of James Sutherland as an early test.

As I learned Sunday there's a big difference between hitting the fairway at Gunnamatta and being in the right part of the fairway at Gunnamatta!
Surely the dad jokes on that course are off the charts.

I don't really agree with it either. I definitely learnt the game at Point Walter Public Golf Course in Perth. Rosny faced one of those issues where no one was playing so less money was spent on the course and because the condition of the course was poor nobody played on it. The course needed to change (becoming a chip and putt course for example) but I would hazard a guess that there would have bee some old school gents playing that loved it the way it was and didn't want anything to change. These people are often quite vocal in their thoughts/opinions. Rosny also has the issue that it actually is quite difficult for new players. It was an 18 hole course reduced to 9 with the building of a major highway, so some holes are a bit weird. Predominantly on the side of hill with some holes simply chopped in half.
The situation could be a benefit to the members courses if they are smart and start promoting pay for play when the course is available. But as I said above, from the outside looking in, Golf Tasmania does 0 promotion of the game save for some national Golf Australia initiatives. A course like Llanherne, a members 9 hole course 10 mins drive form Rosny should be all over this, trying to get those fee paying players across. One of the 'Tasmanian' issues though is that a lot of folks here would consider a 30min drive 'to far', so they won't go to other fantastic courses such as Tea Tree and Pitt Water. Last time I played Tea Tree it was $20 for the day and it's a brilliant 9 hole course. Those courses don't seem to have the know how/ability/funds to promote themselves which is where one would hope Golf Tasmania step up. But they won't.

As someone who started the game ~18 months ago, the most intimidating thing by far was the first time going out on course. You have no idea of the situation, don't want to look the fool, don't want to get yelled at, or impede anyone else's game or time.

Genuinely if it weren't for those local, cheap, beginner friendly courses I started out on (Oakleigh for me), I probably would never have started playing the great game.

If there's an issue, it's that maybe those courses don't market themselves for what they are, if you're a known local, public, easy accessible course, then beginners/juniors/new people to the game is your market. Get them in with clinics, group sessions, pro lessons working through the course. There's a market for places like that, because if we don't have those lower end options then the balance is far too high towards the higher end, and that makes the game less accessible and less welcoming for beginners.

Not sure if golf Aus will care. They have bigger fights coming up in Melbourne and Sydney regarding public use of land. it is a concerning trend and one where they can't afford to lose in the bigger cites.

The Rosny 6th hole was up there as the worst hole I have ever played. more often than not, you are either on the bottom of the hill or in the trees, despite hitting the middle of the fairway. Some member courses can be intimidating for new players with its well-kept course conditions and rules, on top of being expensive. Rosny was Rosny. It had neither of these things. You could swing and miss for days.

I have been on the waiting list for llanherne for 6 months to join as a member. The best-kept course down south. So, they have no need to change practices. . I tried to play tea tree one Friday. They had closed the course so members couldn't practice for the Saturday Comp. Nothing anywhere on the website. To say I was annoyed would be an understatement.

The Bagdad 'pitch and putt' is ok for practice, $15 all day. Or from Tea Tree, drive down Tea Tree Rd to Richmond, you can either play Richmond or turn left and play Campania.

Cheers - good insight there Bicco on the state of the Hobart market.

Rosney sounds the same as Elsternwick in Melbourne where I learned to play. Council gave it no capital investment for many many years - probably deliberately as on the edge of the new green belt. End result patronage drops away and the Council reclaims the land.

Sad situation all round. Golf Australia really needs to employ a course architect on a retainer to travel to these places and advise committees and management on basic improvement opportunities for their courses.

The new Sandringham is a great example of what can happen when a basic municipal facility is upgraded by someone who knows what they are doing.

I lived in St Kilda for years and had many rounds at Elsternwick. The original Huntingdale I believe? 3rd hole was a corker.

How's the muppets that are driving the campaign to get rid of golf courses because relatively few people use them compared to the land they take up....while playgrounds are over crowded.

Apparently there are dickheads sitting on fairways on holes at Northcote Golf Course with the intention of disrupting people's rounds. I am pretty good at hitting a low stinging driver off the deck. Sounds like the club of choice regardless of the hole length.

Love how they think it belongs to them.

If golf wasn't there the government/council/private would have sold the land for plenty of cash and had a tiny park.

Don't think they'd be too happy to pay the prices we pay either.

The bold part is actually pretty hard to argue against I think. On a really solid day the max number of people who can play on a 120 acre course is somewhere in the 250-300 people vicinity. Not comparable with how many locals could use the Albert Park course over the course of a day as an example for walking, playing with their dog etc.

The problem I have with Magda etc is why golf isn't deemed as a recreation activity worthy of using the land? Does she not want a single golf course anywhere on earth?

These people still roll out the tired old image of the sport as an elitist pastime. And outlets like the Fairfax press are often more than happy to run with it.

Indeed. At least the golfers are providing some sort of income to the council through Green fees. 200 players @ $30= $6000 a day which is far better than nothing that the walkers will provide.

And they will not keep all that land for recreational use....nothing surer up goes another 1000 dwellings...introducing 2000 more vehicles to the already congested area.

Removing another avenue for a recreation pursuit like golf is also taking away the opportunity for younger people to do something outside....the chance to get passionate about a hobby, get them off their phones for a bit isn't a bad thing. Learn a sport that one can play into the late years of life...unlike other sports where the demands on the body stop you.

The mental health benefits for those that already use the facility cannot be measured.

Golf courses are great wildlife corridors for the birds and animals that are left in our cities as well.

Not to mention the huge economic benefits that the golf industry provides.

Pretty short sighted to take aim at golf imo.
