Does anyone believe that you can genuinely not have any hangover whatsoever if you get absolutely smashed?

I've had a discussion with a friend of mine who I don't see much. He claims that when he gets legless he always wakes up fine the next day. No headache, no nausea, no dry mouth, not dehydrated - nothing.

Now on facebook this morning 2 people have claimed to have "massive" nights and both drank a "shitload" (we had the opening of the Fringe here)

First guy: "wow drank soooo much last night, but no hangover! yay!"

Second guy: "massive night of booze last night, thankfully no hangover at all!"

Are these people legit? Or do the people who claim they don't get hangovers don't get them because they only drink 5 or 6 beers and exaggerate how much booze they actually had?

Thoughts?

I've found it's often the people that drink rarely or young kids that don't get hangovers. Must have something to do with a healthy liver.

I'm 19 years old, drink as much as my mates (if not more than) whenever we go out and don't really get hangovers. When I drink, the worst I'll get is waking up with a dry mouth (which is easily cured by one swig of water), a shitty taste in my mouth which lasts most of the day, and on the rare occasion a headache which lasts about half an hour. I don't know why it is. I am fairly limited with my drink choices and don't drink too many straight shots, but I think luck also plays a role.

EDIT: Ah I think Forthwrite is correct, I've thought about this before and come to the same conclusion. I always stay awake for a bit when I get home, rather than just crashing straight away.

Never used to get them, and I drunk outlandish mixes of spirits and wine and in big quantity.

Now I have to stick the one drink and hydrate with water. Banana (no homo or penis) before you go to sleep works well too.

** I write this hungover as **** at work **

I find some drinks leave me with no hangover, vodka soda water is a beauty like this, you look and sound like a ****, but you're greatful the next day.

But if I have a big night on several different drinks, or on something like wine I'm a dead man.

Last night I had several different drinks, fml

It's an age thing for me as well, I never got hangovers until my early 20's... now some mornings after getting hammered I feel like im going to die

When I know im going to get totally wasted I leave two large water bottles next to my bed beforehand then force myself to drink them before i sleep

There is a heap of things that can reduce or remove a hangover. Time is the biggest. So sleeping will help massively as the worst effects will be when you are not conscious.

What you drink and your age will influence the severity of the hangover. Clear spirits being the best and wine and beer being the worst. Obviously being younger will help as well. Mixers can make a difference to, lots of sugar or caffeine will not help a hangover. The best mixer would be tonic water or plain water.

Lastly drinking water before going to bed will make a massive difference.

I generally do not get hangovers, although i find that they are occurring more and more frequently as ive gotten older. Also if i drink beer then i will more than likely get one.

There was a media report recently saying that the best cure for a hangover is coffee. Have tried it the last few weeks and one week it worked, the other it made me vomit - go figure!

I cant really see how caffeine would do anything to help. Expect for a bit of rehydration.

hangovers get worse the older you get
damn straight :(

although the six to nine months i've picked it back up again and not been so bad. the summer of 2009 and 2010 was ****ing horrendous. any time i drank i was just ****ing useless the next day.

water is always hand but i always forget. as soon as i get home from a night out i am out like a light. i love my sleep.

german beers are good. even if they're not imported they should still be made using the same german purity law so you won't get the exessive amounts of preservatives that australian beers have.

I would say that most times I drink heavily I get a tame hangover. I'm never in agony or anything like that, my body just doesn't function all that well on the following day, characterised by a volatile stomach.

One thing that has never happened to me however is the morning after chunder. A lot of my friends often experience this, yet I have never found myself in this situation.

They do. Never used to get 'em when I was younger. Drank huge quantities too.

Ever since I had the baboon liver transplant everything has been sweet again.

Mine have also worsened with age. I do find them very inconsistent though, there's not always a direct correlation between how much/what I drink and how bad the hangover is.

I must say I do love waking up after a big night and feeling nowhere near as bad as you thought you would.

Like most people, my hangovers have gotten worse as I've gotten older.

There's a few tips to help reduce the hangover. Vodka, lime and sodas or G&Ts are good as they hydrate as you drink. I usually drink some water before bed and always try and go for a swim in the morning as soon as I wake up.

I reckon the swim is the ace up the sleeve though. I always feel mint after a swim. It feels as though you've rehydrated your entire body.

Also, I was gonna make a new thread, but I thought I'd put it here. Is anyone doing FebFast? I'm having a go at it, but for me, I dont drink much, so it's not hard for me. On the other hand, my dad is also having a go at it and he drinks 6/7 nights a week. He's only drinking one night a week and while he says he feels better, lost weight etc, he's still struggling lol.

Like a lot of people have already said, hangovers started getting really bad for me once I hit about 20. Before then, hardly ever got them.

Sleep and Water help. Smoking the remaining darts you have left in your pack from the night before does not. :o

I'm the same, have only ever spewed the morning after once which caught me by surprise. :p I will spew sometimes during a binge (usually when i get home blind, but sometimes during the night if i have a shot or something goes down badly)...

Also I really struggle "backing it up" the following night during a bender. I'll push through if I have to, but **** me those first few drinks are agony. How do you guys cope?

I've really only ever had one real hangover which I'll ptu down to not knowing what to do after I vomited. It was the first time I vomited from being smashed, and I just went to bed straight away with grog still in my system. What I find that tends to help is if you wait a bit til you don't feel so drunk before going to sleep. Even if you do wake up to spew you won't be as knackered the next day.

Another tip for young players in the game:

It's the preservatives/additives etc in beers that adds to hangovers: So if you buy a beer like Carlton Natural (most brands have beer like this) you very rarely get hangovers.

This was also stated by beer the rep on the SEN (Melb radio) Beer O'clock show last week when they were talking about a XXXX beer with no preservatives/additives.

I can attest that Carlton Natural rarely gives me a hangover.

i might look like a bit of dick but if i'm struggling from the night before i'll always drink my first beer with a lemonade. and sometimes my first two or even three if necessary (this is rare). not together like a shandy. but i'll order a schooner of beer and a schooner of lemonade and drink them seperately. definately helps me. gets some sugar back in the system and generally the last thing your taste buds want after a huge night is more beer on them so this gives you a bit of an alternate in that department.
