Re: Z Dawson

He will be just like Wall, good skills for VFL and then will get delisted after a year, to skinny. But if we do pick him i guess we will have to wait and see.

Re: Z Dawson

I have no idea why we keep persisting with other clubs' junk. Not like we are going to unearth a 150-200 game player when a previous club has thrown them on the trash pile. Just another dud 1 game wonder. Sam Isles isn't going to fix our problems, neither will Dawson. Would much prefer if we give a 22-23 y.o ripping up the state leagues a spot, such as Nahas or Caruso.

Re: Z Dawson

If this does turn out to be the case it goes to show that there are some legitimate concerns about our lack of depth in key defenders. Providing he's taken with one of our last picks I don't see the harm, however I would like to see the remaining picks used on 18 year old kids.

Re: Z Dawson

some ppl really confuse me! wat would be the harm in rookie listing Zac we need kkp defender was at the premiers. He will be ready to take the next step. Just remember he was thrown into the deep end at an early age.

Re: Z Dawson

My brothers and sisters, I can confirm that brother B n G has preached my words and that is one Z Dawson will be joining us via the rookie draft. Of course things can happen between now and then, but I don't think Zac will be shaving himself down and we'll have a spot for him in 09.

Re: Z Dawson

Not liking this one bit. Hawthorn are desperate for backmen, yet they let him go even after putting 3-4 years of development into him. Pray we don't use our 1st round on him.

I don't like it either Bench. I would very surprised if we used our first round pick on him. He has bulked up a bit for what it's worth and I don't mention this as an excuse to pick him up.

G. Ablett Snr: Hawthorn -> Geelong
N. Buckley: Brisbane -> Collingwood

even

J.Gram: Brisbane -> St.Kilda

I'm sure there're plenty of others...

You could probably do a bit of research into the number of Rookied players who don't even get a game (Van Rheenan, etc...). Even a 1 game wonder would be a success by comparison with a 0 game wonder.

Maybe you should do your research. Buckley and Ablett left on there own accord. Brisbane and Hawthorn did not get rid of them. Dawson will be a waste of a selection. He has had his chance. Hawthorn would not get rid of him if he had the ability to hold down FB OR CHB considering their back line is the achillies heal, if they infact have one

Re: Z Dawson

I do not like this at all. However, if it's using the last pick in the rookie draft, there is not going to be a massive consequence if this fails.

Here is a thought. How many successful key position players come off the rookie list? Not too many. It seems mostly midfielders.

Then there is the little issue that Dawson looked out of his depth at AFL level. Hope he proves me wrong.

By junk i mean picking up other team's delistings. But you hold a fair argument, a small percentage of rookies actually kick on and make the senior list but being such a deep draft with the talent and potential on offer surely there would be a better KP prospect than Dawson. Surely.

Too early to answer that question, clubs have only started taking the rookie list seriously the last couple of years.

Mal Michael and Nathan Bock are two who came off the rookie list though.

MAl Michael
Tahdg Kennely
Ben Rutten
Nathan Bock
Nathan Basset
More recently Michael Jamison

Adelaide have done exceptionally well, their backline is pretty much full of rookies. Add Porplyzia in their as well. Very very handy the Rookie draft is nearly as vital as the ND.

Re: Z Dawson

Stephen Gilham is another one.

Delisted by Port, rookie listed by Hawthorn and now he's a premiership player.

Interesting to hear Dawson has put on that much weight. Even 13kg would still make him a stick though. ;)

If the club decide to take him I'll look forward to following his progress for the Zebras.

Have fun with Zac. He should be ok. He's going to need a lot of work in the defence so make sure you have got a good quality backline coach to help him push through the ranks.

Re: Z Dawson

Alex Silvagni just turned 21 and is eligible for rookie draft. When they last met in the Box Hills versus Scorpions Silvagni had the better of Dawson in the goal square.

Re: Z Dawson

Agree about Z dawson being a zebras player. I just think Riewoldt had him figured out and exposed him a bit when he played on him.

Weights isn't that much of an issue - his ability to turn instead of just running in straight lines isn't all that magnificent.

Re: Z Dawson

An update (of sorts). I was until recently an unabashed Zac fan, so take with a grain of salt.

Was 196cm and <80kg when he last played AFL.
At the start of this season he was 94kg - prob about 96kg now. Has been a steady growth of 6-8 kg every season.
IS now at the level where he can hold his own defensively.
Quick on the lead, long arms, good spoil.
Decent kick. LONG kick.
Plenty of Mongrel. (elbow to ribs off the ball, etc).

Reaction times are slow/non-existant. Very much a one-and-done player - but that one effort is usually good enough (easily held Fevola quiet in NAB). Seems to struggle with judging the high-ball, much better if he is following his man to the ball.

If you want a shut-down FB, who's good on the lead, but offers little else (with maybe a relief ruck stint) he could be very good for you.

Hawthorn want smaller, more mobile, highly skilled defenders who can play zonal defence which requires footy smarts and understanding - Gilham has regularly shown to be poor on bigger forwards, yet was protected (playing on 3rd talls) while developing - Zac was always going to be a KPP or nothing.
