Recommitted Zach Merrett [UFA 2027] - Wanted a trade to Hawthorn, but it didn't get done

If we could have got the 2027 first it would have been ok.
Pick 10 - could have got a decent player.
2026 F1 - allows us to bolster for next draft
2027 F1 - would have allowed us to bank points for Bewick

we didn't really need 22 this year, they could have kept that.
Merrett could still play 5 more years - given they offered 5 year deal at 1.2 million

I think front ending him, is part of the reason we kept him one more year. Also be why he would want out.

Hawks stuffed up - should ahve offered 2027 first or a player and operated in good faith

Merrett stuffed up - he should have not signed his last contract, or just gone for 2 years and left as a free agent.
2027 first rounder is like pick 25-30 anyway. idk why we wanted it other than for Bewick points, but by the same token idk why that is the thing they baulked at either.

We never heard the counter offer but they could have asked for something back too, if indeed we didn’t include that in the proposed trade in the first place.

Paraphrased from Reddit:

"Hey I want your car, how much for it?"
"Sorry, not for sale, I need it"
"But I'm offering better than market value, stop being unreasonable!"
"Still not for sale"
"Another guy sold a similar car to you six years ago for less!"
"What?"
"And you need my money more than the car!"

Did they even offer above market value? Pick 9/10 didn't hold a ton of value to us given all the picks we have and the rest were either in the future or considered junk because of the weakness of the draft

Pick 10, a couple of picks in the 20s and a VFL player is disrespectful

He doesn't want to be there. And judging by some of his behaviour it wouldn't shock me if Merrett's the source of some of your problems.

A half decent recruitment and development division and you should get be able to get plenty out of that lot. And nothing Merrett does is going to take Essendon anywhere any time soon.

Hawthorn screwed the pooch with their leave it late ultimatum offer tactic. No wiggle room for negotiations.

Ignore the 2026 first but Since when is pick 10 not considered a decent pick anymore? If i'm essendon im going straight to west coast with 5+6+22 for duursma and still picking from a group of players that are good to v good before this draft falls off a cliff.

So if they agreed and threw in the 2027 1st as well, what would you all be saying when that got rejected and they asked for 5 1st rounders? Gee Hawthorn really messed this up for another pick that is going to be in the 20's!! Sheeesh

Well thank god you're not our list manager then, if we are rebuilding at least do it properly.

There didnt need to be any negotiations! I mean 3 1st rounders and a 2nd! What did Jeremy Cameron go to the cats for?
You think it was too high? If only there was a thing where you could suggest something different, and they could have a think about this different proposal. Maybe someone will think of a way to resolve it one day....

Wow i just spat water all over my computer screen, this is pretty funny and I'm sure theyll get it right eventually!
And one day the penny will drop for you, we don't have the list spots hence wanting a best 22 player from whorethorne

Sarcasm got lost in all of that, forgot to add this little fella ;)

There is way too much focus on the two clubs involved here, and way too little focus on the player manager and the media.

Essendon were clear he wasn’t going to be traded.

Hawthorn were clear they weren’t going to include a star player or pay what they perceived as overs.

The deal was never getting done. The people who mucked the most shit and made this a disaster aren’t being held accountable, and that’s the media and Petoro.

How many years did Jeremy Cameron have remaining on his contract when he left the Giants?

The two situations are not comparable.

Yet another Hawks supporter that thinks the Hawks offered 3 top ten picks and also doesn't realise the Jeremy Cameron situation is not comparable at all.

Everything I've read suggested the three first round picks are 10, 22 and the 2026 F1. Considering four academy picks are touted in the top 10 alone and there may be more between 10 and 22, and assuming Hawks replicate this season next year, that is 14, 26 (at best) and approximately 16 (before academy selections), along with a fringe player.

Wow, how could they refuse.

Can you point to where i said this? And your right Jeremy Cameron is not comparable, he was a 27 year old superstar (best CHF in the comp) so i apologise for bringing him down to this level
