Speculation Zach Merrett

You realise we exist in a reality where multiple questions can be asked, yes?
are you really trying to shift goal posts after being caught out?

ask it if you are going to ask it. stop shifting goal posts then

Do I think we will get the deal we got offered last year? probably not. Do I think we will still get a healthy enough deal this year when Merrett invariably requests a trade? yes

What will said trade resemble? thats been posted already (a 1st + a 2nd)

I honestly think a first and second is very fair for Zach imo, still has at least 5 years of good footy in him.

ive posted earlier, a 2026 first + a 2027 first shouldn't be out of the question. a 2027 first is likely to be in the mid-late 20s + whatever this years first ends up being.

Yeah na.
Thats overs.

The poor bloke is almost as broken as the team.
A 2026 first rounder and one of our second rounders should get the deal done.
If the Hawks snare their number one target then they may turn their attention to Zac’s wish to get the hell out of Essendon.

Don't forget you (hawks) had the inside running for the bulk of the time last trade period, you'd imagine there will be another bunch of hats in the ring next time now it's all out in the open, should drive price up via market pressures

How does it drive up the price? He nominates a team - then ess will negotiate with them. It’s not an auction - you don’t get to sell him to the highest bidder.

Because as a contracted player he already saw the stubborn campaigners that employ him stonewall him once. If hawthorn don't cough up again the same shit will happen, if he really wants to go , he widens his pool of options.

pretending a 26 and 27 1st is overs is hilarious
He’s 31 and going to leave for nothing next year if they don’t trade him this year and while he is still playing well he hasn’t been at his best this year. it is way overs

It’s ok to make a mistake - but to go back to back would be interesting.

Especially after seeing how well it turned out for the Dee’s. If you think your offer will be better this year you maybe in for a shock.

Wouldn't say better, if day there are more competitive offers out there ..the dees got
  • Pick 7
  • Pick 8
  • Pick 37
  • 2026 First-Round Pick
  • 2027 Third-Round Pick
If hawthorn offered close to that he's playing there now instead it was

Pick 10, Pick 22, a 2026 first-round pick, a VFL player and we give back a third? In a year we already had more picks than we were using. Yeh nah

I've followed this club a long time, I know how pissy they can get, a second mistake in lieu of a trade week win is peanuts for them.

What do we think anyone will offer for him this year? Late first and a second at beast? Two high second round picks?

I would hope we offer no more than 2 x 2nds and it is our one and only offer and Essendon take it or leave it.

No negotiations. No crazy effort. No mad rush before the deadline. And the offer is made directly to Welsh.

We need to focus on talented kids and they will require ohr 1st round picks.

If we are spending 1sts on Merrett we arent getting anyone else of quality, outside of FA - which everyone knows is a system we abuse...

People need to stop comparing deals, the Suns didn’t have to value the picks with academy prospects

Let’s not all forget the Dees also gave the Suns

•2026 Second Rd pick

As someone else has already posted on here, the deals were actually similar in the points value calculation. The idea that one was way more than the other isn’t true.

Points value is just an AFL metric that doseht help anyone. Actual picks have different value to different clubs depending on situation. As someone already pointed out picks didn't mean much to gc who needed academy points. As for us we had a massive list bloat due to all the Injuries and hitting the msd hard. We had more picks than list spots already. The deal just didn't offer us anything, it is what it is.

Agree but it does at least put some perspective on the proposed deal and this fantasy idea that one was junk and one was great. Which just isn’t true.

I get that the deal may not have fit the situation for the EFC, but I reckon Rosa could have worked some magic and was actually keen to get it done and get to work to see what he could do with the package before Welsh stepped in.

I think Rosa is good at what he does. And I reckon he’d be filthy he didn’t get the chance.

Anyway as you said, is what it is.

But it’s not apples for apples. Suns needed to off load picks due to academy kids. Trade them or lose them in points.

Also the Hawks didn’t have those picks and the offer was more than fair. Dee’s also traded a 3 time AA & 4 time B&F for a 3rd rounder - who is 2 years younger.

I'm not here saying it's right or wrong, I wanted him traded, I'd have traded. Still wouldn't call the offer fair, I'd call it what they had to give, they are two different lanes for the same result

(And I get that you don't always get fair when your player wants out but that's what contracts are for)

Just throwing it out there, based on current predictions the Hawks 2 2nds are currently picks 24 & 27, next years first is pick 22 (based on Hawks finishing 4th - doesn’t account for F/S & NGA bids). I assume with a healthy Day and Merrett they finish better than 4th.

Why the outrage over a potential 3-5 pick difference? I assume the Bombers would rather GWS’ 26 2nd dependent on if they improve later in the year because same year picks have more value than future picks.

Just because the Hawks offered overs last year I wouldnt expected them to this year.

I think part of their offer last year, was based on feeling an obligation to Zach, particularly after the blowup. They misread what it would take to get a deal done and it blew up in their face.

They are an attractive club. If they are going to throw around multiple 1sts you'd think it'd be smarter to go after a younger mid. Like Humphrey.

I think a single mid-late 1st from a club that thinks they are in the window gets it done this year.

Hawks or Crows probably make the most sense. Maybe Melbourne. They hold picks 11,13,15 at the moment. Any of those probably ok in a straight swap.
