Essendon 2014 offseason

It is not about victories.
It is about cleaning this mess and trying to get back to the top of the tree.
Hawthorn are a long way in front of us at present.

Any chance this thread can stay on topic.

Do any clubs have interest in Elliot Kavanagh? He could be the type of player that could be involved in a win/win trade.

Nah, he's more value to Essendon than outside

Gwilt isn't a bad pickup, usually a good kick out of the backline. Got found out a bit with playing on the big forwards (that problem is thankfully fixed now with Delaney and Bruce) but reliable on the middle of the range forwards.

Our focus on playing kids is evident with his delisting.

Absolutely tore us up in round 5 (I think) this year.

Yep, was left loose and swept up every stray kick that came down back.
And when it wasn't him we always let him get an easy mark from the next kick which invariably went to Riewoldt via Stanley or Hickey

Is he contracted? I could not see much more than a third rounder and a bottom 5 side wanting him.
Yeah, worth much more internally than externally.

His problem is he is similar to a few in front of him. Players like Colyer will play in front of him because of his leg speed, merrett is very clean and Gleeson more X factor. Would have been easier to judge if they gave him 10 full games to see where he is at.

Surprised he wants out after the effort to get to the bombers.

Very happy to be picking up Gwilt he's the exact sort our back line needs with fletcher slowing down.

He also isn't any good as forward which means he struggles when he gets a game at AFL he plays as a rotation mid who has to spend large portions of the game as HFF

I have no doubt that given a relatively uninterrupted run at it he'll come good. I remember one VFL game he had about 12 touches in 20 minutes before he got rested for the seniors and just showed clean hands, great vision and movement at the stoppage.

Which bombers are gonna get delisted before the draft ? Could see a few like dell, thurlow, Van unen possibly one of pears or Gregory thoughts guys ?

Main list will be van Unen, Gregory, Hardingham, Jetta and delisting Browne or hams to take them as rookies so we can take the minimum draft selections required.

Hams just resigned so it will more likely be Browne, you reckon thurlow will stay he struggled to get a game in the vfl ?

Thurlow isn't on the senior list. Either way, I doubt he'll stay, do not rate him one iota.

The guys he has been battling are some of the best in the AFL (Hepell, Watson, Goddard even, Myers could take that next step) as a ball hunting inside midfielder, nothing to do with outside runners like Gleeson (half back anyways), Merret (half forward/wing) or Colyer (outside runner).

It wouldn't actually surprise me to see us delist Pears in the hope of him getting through to the rookie draft. With Steinberg (which is interesting with itself), Gregory showing glimpses and hoping we retain him on the rookie list and Fletcher going around again he could be a prime candidate to be moved down.

I know eth-dog has argued vehemently that we should/could move one of Gregory/Browne/Hams to the rookie list but if fit they could all be in serious consideration for senior selection. Something Tayte will not be.

If someone picked him up before us, no sweat, we haven't lost nor gained anything out of it.
