If Brisbane walk away from talks, what do you think Gold Coast will offer? Why would GC offer more than they have to, if they end up being the only suitor? From what I understand from Ashcroft's comments, is that the Gold Coast will only enter talks for Beams, IF and when talks between Brisbane and Collingwood fall over.

Apart from some brief opening comments, face to face negotiations between the Lions and Magpies apparently haven't officially commenced.

The other question is will Beams want to go to the Gold Coast if the Suns offer a significantly lesser contract than what Brisbane can offer? By all reports, the Lions have far more space under the cap limit than the Suns do. I understand that a player's salary can be paid by two clubs and that Collingwood could come to the party in that regard.

Because getting the deal done this year is more important than engaging in an all out dong measuring contest next year when he comes out of contract? Because its better to get a deal done and secure a player to increase chances of playing in their maiden finals campaign? Plenty of reasons to get involved and satisfy the needs of the incumbent club.

If we were to get pick 4 in a straight swap for Beams and decide to just take it to the draft, we might be in the range for getting a McCartin or a Wright, essentially future-proofing Cloke's eventual retirement and providing a partner/foil for Moore down the track. Kind of a Buddy/Roughy type draft situation...

On the other hand, if you're after an immediate option, Brett Eddy in the SANFL (formerly from our VFL side) could be had on the cheap to plug that hole. Otherwise, it's pray for Ben Reid...
There's always McKenzie too. There is every chance he'll be there at pick 22 if we get that for H and choose to use pick 4(5?) on a midfielder.

Also an option.

Heres a hypothetical then. Its five years from now and out of the blue Aish says he needs to go back to South Australia immediately to be with his sick family member, notwithstanding they are now in remission and he is contracted to your club for another year.

He says however that you will only get to deal with Port, because they have more salary cap and are his preferred destination. Port have been rumoured to be dangling a 5 year multimillion dollar contract in front of his nose all year, in spite of that being against the rules and all but there you go, we have to be all humanitarian dont we.

Oh, but, Adelaide are offering less, but better compensation for Brisbane. Do you do the deal with Port, do the deal with Adelaide but use some of your salary cap to pay him notwithstanding you just lost one of your best players out of the blue and it rogers your ability to get into the free agency market to backfill the gaping hole he just made, or do you politely enquire whether, as this is supposed to be an extraordinary move dictated by humanitarian considerations and done with the best graces of a club who has looked after him well and is under no obligation other than a moral one to help him subvert the normal player movement rules, perhaps if he has to take unders, thats part of the sacrifice necessary.

Of course if its about money, we can see what we can do to accomodate you staying.

Hypothetically.

Yes Moderator you still have the upper hand and could royally rip us off getting unders if GC put in a half arsed effort.

It should be pick 4 and Aish but no, no, if all goes to planned you'll get a ready made superstar that Collingwood's put all the work into for pick 4.

How dare we speculate the play of GC on our board so in effect we get a better return on OUR investment.

Now run along.

For who? Collingwood? Beams? The question is at what point does the asking price become too high for Brisbane? And what will Gold Coast offer, if they become the only suitor? Less that what they might offer if there were two clubs biding for Beams' services at the same time. And that doesn't appear to be the case.

But not at any price.

Where does the player want to go?.....Same 2 clubs in SA when Polec wanted to go home...Polec only wanted to go to Port...No good negotiating with a club if the player doesn't want to go there...Why would a club put a disgruntle player on their list? ..just because a club gets a better return? Other things to consider how many more players does said manager of player have at original club.....contract talks with other players down the track can become a real problem...

GC entering the process is good news and should assist in getting an outcome. Beams' manager said that 99% of the reason for heading home was his father so if that is correct GC must be a live option.

The only way I see Brisbane walking away is if GC make an offer they choose not to beat.

Fine by me.

So are you saying its about football reasons and not purely humanitarian ones?

Because the way I look at it, the clubs haven't even spoken to each other

Your kidding yourself if you believe the club's brains trusts have not spoken together off record.

Both parties have been aware of Beamer's intentions for quite some time.

You can speculate all you like, as is your right. And just as Collingwood supporters make ample comments on our board on the same issue, (which incidentally I have no problem with) I don't see why Lions supporters can't reciprocally make comment on speculation on your board.

I'd suggest for all involved. The fact remains that he is a listed, contracted player. The clubs in question need to satisfy Collingwoods needs. At what point does the cost become too high? At whatever point the Lions/Suns decide it is! If they're willing to roll the dice and wait a year for things to develop then so be it. But is that something you'd really want to do?

The only news to come out of today is that Beams > Lions is far from fait accompli

It seems that you're welcome to. However you're trying to put out flames from our supporters on our board that the play of GC will see us get a more appropriate return on one of our player who the club have put a lot of investment in. It's poor form coming from a moderator.

Dayne Beams also wants a good trade deal for Collingwood.

Brisbane has to offer good compensation otherwise Beams will consider them as not appreciative of his talent.

I hope GC comes to the party and ruins Brisbane's chances.

Then Brisbane start talking to Port Adelaide about a possible deal.

You attempt to do a deal with Port Adelaide, because the preferred designation is Port. If that breaks down, you sound out Aish whether he is prepared to move to Adelaide. If not, you go back to Port. If so, you deal with Adelaide who may offer less because Port are now out of the picture. Hypothetically.

Sounds like Ashcroft sees that Beams is worth way more than solely Pick 4, especially considering Beams is entering his prime.

Beams cant refuse to go Gold Coast... he wants to spend time with his dad.

If he does refuse GC then Brisbane have to match or better the offer, otherwise, Beams' motives snd reasons for wanting to break his contract are null and void.

We're appy for Beams to stay a pie btw...
