Same task as previously posted retro-drafts here for 1975 year and onwards.
Simply a fun task to look back in retrospect of all players that would have turned 18 in 1980 that ended up playing in the league then or later (some obviously earlier as there was no actual draft or restrictions of players under 18 not being able to play)

If you followed and watched the VFL in the 1980's you will have some memory of how good some of these footballers were.
Here is the retrospective draft pool of 18 year olds in year 1980:

Certainly a pool of players that does not excite as much as pool of players born a year earlier.
Hardest one so far I found to pick my number one pick to vote for in poll.
Hardie, Abernethy and Rhys-Jones probably the classiest of this batch with Hardie and Rhys-Jones very controversial characters in their day. Hardie won a Brownlow medal, Rhys-Jones a Norm Smith medal and Brian Taylor probably won a Coleman medal in his time too. Many of these players would experience the before , during and after of the league expanding from a 12 club VFL league to see South Melbourne move to Sydney, then West Coast and Brisbane start out in late 80's to see the league expand to 14 clubs and also change the name of league to AFL in 1990. By the time Bruce Abernethy finished his career Adelaide became a 15th club. Quite a time of massive change for the league in these players lifetime. When they started out their careers football matches in this league were played basically all on a Saturday afternoon, at same time in Melbourne. However, by the end of their careers football spread all over the weekend, including the start of regular night football on tv and in 5 different states.

The Hyphen ahead of BT in the draft batch of the talented trouble makers for this poll results.
As a Carlton supporter I hope the draft of 2015 has more elite choice at the top end to make use of ours picks 1, 8 and 11 this month.
