Wasnt it that ex Geelong and south freo guy aswell he had rated in the top 20 that never went

Schlensog? Yeah look the talent is there but he is immature and has a lack of professionalism.

It seems as though all the players have fallen exactly as you'd want them ..Is that correct?

Very nice 🙂

Almost I had wanted McAuliff to have lasted a few more spots and it would have fallen beautifully.

That said Patton was very close, so happy with him.

The first three went pretty close to plan, had Green just ahead of Dawson.

First two picks got exactly who I wanted although having pick 1, sort of is a no brainer anyway, therefore no gloating about that one.

The mix of what I got is good.

You can’t draft what’s not there.

First, there’s not a Lions BigFooty member selecting for us, so it’s a bit much to expect a non Lions follower to have a handle on our list needs.

Secondly, there’s literally no talls worth drafting in our draft range. The ones that are there-a-bouts have limitations, which is why they are still available and were skipped over, which I’ve highlighted on our board.

If I had been drafting, I’d have taken Gothard and Simpson with our first two picks.

Then I would have trawled the Rookie Me draft guide for a winger for our third pick, and probably passed on our fourth pick (because we know we’re not using it in the real thing).

If the rumours are true that we’ve committed to Bruce Reville and Kyle Dunkley in the rookie draft, you know this draft isn’t deep.
Agree. I may not agree that Don't I can be a winger, but the selection logic is fair given what's available.

Think you absolutely put the icing on the cake with Patton there, already had Reid and Edwards as contested mids. Nice blend and added some real talent. 👌

He is a good fit for what freo needs. I would like if we take him though as he would also be a good fit for us.
Dockers have a handy history with mature aged small forwards. Not just Shultz, Switkowski and the most recent GOAT Hayden Ballantyen who was 21 iirc

Good pick up and probably the most logical selection outside of Harley Reid at 1, Jed Walter 2, Zane Duursma > Hawks

Writeups later today.....

Pick 47 Cooper Simpson
Height: 181cm
Weight: 79kg
Position: Midfielder / Forward

What do I like about the player? Co-Captain of the Dandenong Stingrays, Cooper Simpson is an attacking midfielder who has a bit of pace about him and can really hit the scoreboard. I think that whilst he has predominantly played as a midfield, his set of strengths should see him still useful on the outside or down forward.

What are the weaknesses? Was injured for quite a bit of the season. A below average size midfielder at 181cm. He also doesn't use his kicking weapons as much as he could at the moment, preferring to deal in fast handballs whilst in close - however I think this is something that can be addressed at the next level training.

Why Brisbane? Again a player with some speed but also a midfielder who hits the scoreboard a bit.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Pick 48 Joe Fonti
Height: 189cm
Weight: 79kg
Position: Wing / Half Back

What do I like about the player? Fonti is a line breaker and interceptor and someone I can definitely envisage lining up on a wing and doing breaking runs. A 20m time of 2.884 seconds is top line fast, and he also had reasonable results in the agility and vertical leap results. On the field he uses this to really breaks the lines. He is also a very good intercept mark around the ground; part of this is his good sense of the play and his positioning (which would be useful if he is playing a fat-side wing role).

What are the weaknesses? Kicking - I have seen it be pretty good when not under pressure, but he also has had nightmare games where he has run at low percentages. Having said that I am seeing (in the situation Brisbane picked him) as being a wing, and in many respects he is no worse a kick than many of the best wingers, and in an AFL environment I see this picking up so that it just average.

Why Brisbane? If we are thinking that he plays wing then he is a line breaking wingman who can also be two way, positioning and taking intercept marks through the middle of the ground and driving the ball back into the forward fifty.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Pick 49 Jack Delean
Height: 181cm
Weight: 77kg
Position: Half Forward / Midfielder

What do I like about the player? Skillful, smart player who works hard, tackles well and kicks goals; kicking 53 from 20 games at all levels. I like his kicking both in terms of kicking for goals and disposing to others, and his positioning and timing makes up a bit for being only an average speed player.

What are the weaknesses? I guess the main query is whether he has the speed to play as a small forward at AFL level? And if not whether he can make it further up the ground?

Why Sydney? I was going to stop picking after Cleary but I just think that Delean is someone who fits the Sydney team and can add some more forward power either as a half forward or up in the midfield somewhere, and I just see him as someone who can definitely be significant at an AFL level.
Sorry but only rookie picks available.

Sorry but only rookie picks available.
In the first post;

A MINIMUM of 2 picks applies, and whilst we do try to keep the phantom somewhat realistic, we're not going to enforce clubs only selecting the amount of players that they have list spots for

Sorry but only rookie picks available.
In addition to PM’s post above, that’s not actually true. We have one more spot to fill but it can be used in either the ND or rookie draft.

Just because the Swans (like many other clubs) tend to go with a 36/6 split, they don’t have to.

That said, Delean doesn’t really fill a list need. And doesn’t excite me.

Pick 54 - Sam Clohesy
Pick 54 Fremantle - Sam Clohesy

I’m going to stick with the mature aged players, and take the 20 year old teammate of Mannagh here too. I wouldn’t be surprised if both were picked higher than where I got them, and I doubt they’ll be the only mature aged draftees come the real thing. For what it’s worth, I also strongly considered Mutaz El Nour who I’ve liked for a couple of years now. I’m hoping he gets a go somewhere.

But I went with Clohesy instead who showed some real improvement this year. He’s a good size for a medium defender at 189cm - and Fremantle fans know I think it’s an area of real need with Young and Chapman both hopefully getting plenty of midfield minutes next year. He provides good run and drive, uses the ball well. Another one who could likely see early action in 2024.

eDPS I think is up

Pick 15 - Zane Zakostelsky

Height: 196cm
Weight: 89kg
Likely AFL Position: Key Position Defender + Ruck + Ruck Rover

What do I like about the player? Lots of things. Firstly he is incredibly athletic; Top 10 in the 20m sprint, agility, both jumps, winning the standing jump. But more importantly than just random results off a football field that athleticism shows up in the way he plays and gives him a significant advantage in both at the centre square and against opponents in the backline which I can only see becoming more pronounced as he gets more use to AFL. Coupled with the fact that he is really a basketballer who has only just turned up to play footy for a small period of 2 years and you have someone who navigates traffic like it is nothing and has a fantastic directional tap as a ruckman and you have an annoying player to have to line up with. Further to that in addition to having midfielder-like movement he has a midfielder-like handball and is able to accurately get the ball out to others from congestion. Also he is fantastic intercept mark and lead up mark. I have also listened to his interviews and reckon he has some real character and is a dedicated sort that will really work hard to get the best out of himself. Lastly I reckon he can add a lot more weight to his frame and this will make him even harder to match up again.

What are the weaknesses? Two main things. At the moment his kicking is below average, possibly because he has joined the game so late. I think he is a better kick than say Naitanui was at his age (maybe equal to Naughton and Jackson) but he has clocked up an undesirable record of kicking 0 goals 11 points in a game (it was wet but even still) and at the moment he tends to do just bomb the ball. However, I think that it will be possible to get him to an average level of kick once he has a better understanding of what he is trying to achieve in game and refines the technique a bit; and IMO he only needs an average level of kick to be super dangerous. The other aspect is that at 196cm he is at some disadvantage in the ruck and I think means he will probably need to focus on being a utility or KP player; although having a fantastic standing jump makes up a little for this.

Why Sydney? My look at their list suggests that they might find another key position defender useful so that was part of the list justification. The other thing is that I think ZZ is a player that has a high ceiling; RUNVS asked in another thread who could become the next Adam Goodes, and for mine ZZ is a player that has the potential to be a unique match-winner.

Who else did I consider? James Leake and ZZ were the two players I was really keen on at this point in the draft, mainly because IMO they have much higher ceilings than others around this point and I think that that is what Sydney should try and get out of this pick rather than just pick low variance but reasonable return type. Murphy was a consideration just simply because of the key defender side of things, De Mattia because he was a solid option at this point.

TDS7 your turn....
Fingers crossed you’re spot-on.

ZZ is the man for Sydney.

Pick 55 - Michael Rudd
Pick 55 - Essendon - Michael Rudd
193cm - Key Forward

It’s more likely Essendon don’t take this pick but thought I’d take a player that would fill a need with a strong marking forward with a strong endurance base and good ball use.

Rudd isn’t the quickest player but he makes up with it with his endurance and I could see him being able to impact at the next level for Essendon as they have lacked a lot of marking presence from a forward able to present all day. Rudd’s kicking, endurance and marking ability would also hold him in good stead to be a handy key defender if needed if a club is after that.

Yeah we don't have the list spots available for it.

Pick 56 - Nathan Philactides
Pick 56 - Hawthorn - Nathan Philactides - 179cm 80kgs - Small Defender

Hawthorn pass with their remaining picks

I've picked Philactides because I think he's got a lot of AFL attributes, but putting them together has been a struggle. What you cannot deny is that he has the legspeed and the workrate to really hurt teams on counterattacks. He's very similar to a few players we've got on our list, but his strengths lend themselves to our gameplan and he's got enough skills to try him out in different spots around the ground. I'd love to see how he goes as a pressure forward, he has the speed to be a menace and cover a lot of space and the marking prowess to cut off dodgy kicks out of the backline. A speculative pick this far out, but a good baseline to speculate on in my eyes.

I think this is where we'll leave it draft night as well, with Pick 4, McCabe, and Dear either late or a rookie. Philactides might not be selected here, but if there's a slider or a player we like still on the board I think we grab them.

Chris25

Pick 58 - Tom Anasastopoulos
I suspect the draft will be well and truly over by now, and Fremantle won't have this pick now that we've signed Oscar McDonald. But I'll take it anyway, treat it like a rookie pick...

Pick 58 Fremantle - Thomas Anastasopoulos (177cm small forward, Geelong Falcons)

I had Bodie Ryan as my highest rated player left, along with Anastasopoulos and Will Lorenz. I also thought about Matt Carroll, William Rowlands, Mutaz El Nour, Xavier Walsh, Oscar Hine-Baston and Reece Torrent as some others. Just a few guys I think are fringe draft picks and who at least have something to work with.

But I went with the small forward in Anastasopoulos to continue my search for goal scoring at Fremantle. He seems the type that we'd look at, being strong defensively - more in that Schultz and Switkowski mould than Mannagh. He always seems to be on the move, so even though he can go quiet at times he's still working. Also had a few games this year where he's scored a bag of goals, usually those typical crafty small forward goals.

Overall my draft was about two things - more avenues to goals and some immediate reinforcements. My thoughts about the draft as a whole are that it's shallow but even. About 55 picks seems about right, probably with a couple more left field and mature aged picks than we've seen in this.

Smythe

Pick 62 - Kade De La Rue
Pick 62 - Western Bulldogs - Kade De La Rue

Had a few to pick from but went with the more natural footballer option rather then athlete first. His decision making, skills, cleanliness and versatility will all appeal to the Dogs.

This will be the Bulldogs last selection. Pass on the remaining picks.

LemmingMaster and Carlton are up

Watson, Croft, McAuliffe, and De La Rue is a bloody fantastic haul.

Going with the one ruck on the list next year would be bold
