Collingwood closes in on three-year deal for unsigned defender Matthew Scharenberg

Aish, 19, has genuinely considered staying up north in recent weeks but is still expected to request a trade out of the Lions in the next fortnight.

The second-year midfielder has received interest from St Kilda, Adelaide, Collingwood, and to a lesser extent, Richmond.

Richmond is also in the market for a ruckman and could make a play for Brisbane Lion big man Stefan Martin.

The Western Bulldogs, Fremantle and Sydney have been linked to Brisbane free agent Matthew Leuenberger.

Bombers meet Gold Coast ruckman Zac Smith

Smith, who was in Melbourne on Tuesday and is expected to see the Bombers on Wednesday, is among at least three or four options that the Dons are considering to shore up their thin ruck division, with Brisbane's Matthew Leuenberger – a free agent who has been linked to Sydney – also on the Bombers' radar

While Brisbane has been resigned to losing Leuenberger, one complication is that any compensation for him as a free agent signing would be offset – and reduced – if the Lions sign Hawthorn's Matt Suckling as a free agent.

Suckling has been offered four years by the Lions, but they could seek to trade for him if they believe there is significant compensation available for Leuenberger.

AFL Market Watch: Daniel Gorringe to leave Gold Coast, Aaron Hall in demand, Mitch Brown in form

It’s looking likely that Carlton midfielder and Queensland native Tom Bell will head home, while Hawthorn defender Matt Suckling and Collingwood winger Paul Seedsman could also be options.

The Lions hope to target Suckling in the pre-season draft in order to not affect the free agency compensation they will receive for Leuenberger.

Geelong forward Josh Walker has also been identified to help Brisbane’s shortage of key position players.

He [Jarrad Grant] attracted interest from Brisbane in 2013 and the Lions could again loom as potential suitors for his signature two years on.

Zac Smith to consider his options with rival clubs in Melbourne

The Suns are also considering presenting an offer to former Lion captain Jed Adcock.

Football manager Marcus Ashcroft confirmed Adcock was among a group of players the Suns were discussing.

The Suns see Adcock playing a similar role to retired midfielder Andrew Raines, who was a leader of the NEAFL side but also a reliable call-up to the seniors whenever injury struck.

However Adcock will explore every available option as he believes he is still capable of playing every week at the elite level.

Brisbane are still working hard to convince James Aish to recommit to the club.

It is understood football director Leigh Matthews made a pitch to the seventh pick in the 2013 draft over breakfast this week.

West Coast reject links to bad boy Harley Bennell

Brisbane, who will trade for contracted Carlton utility Tom Bell, is also considering the merits of recruiting big forward Levi Casboult, who is also under contract with the Blues.

The Eagles, who will trade with the Swans for Lewis Jetta, who has rejected a contract-extension offer to stay in Sydney because he wants to return home, have also rejected misplaced speculation that contracted Brisbane midfielder Jack Redden is headed their way.

Redden, who has requested a trade but not yet nominated his club of choice, is more likely to go home to South Australia where he has the interest of Adelaide, who will lose free agent Patrick Dangerfield to Geelong.

Mitch Robinson makes most of second chance with Brisbane Lions

Collingwood and Richmond are the likely destinations for Aish if he decides to leave the Gabba.

Brisbane powerbrokers will play hardball with any contracted player that expresses a desire to leave in the next month and will be happy to reject requests for trades.

The Lions had some interest in Hawthorn premiership player and free agent Matt Suckling but have dropped off the chase.

Brisbane are yet to open talks with Carlton about a possible trade for midfielder Tom Bell who is keen to return home to Queensland but is contracted to the Blues for another year.

AFL trades 2015: Brisbane says Stefan Martin not up for trade

THE Brisbane Lions issued a “hands off” warning on best-and-fairest ruckman Stefan Martin.

The Western Bulldogs are actively pursuing the Victorian but Lions chief executive Greg Swann said the club would hold Martin to his contract, which expires in 12 months.

“He’s contracted and he’s going nowhere,” Swann told the Herald Sun.

“He won’t be traded under any circumstances and we’ve told him that and he’s OK.”

There is a growing chance Aish will remain at Brisbane despite the No. 7 draft pick failing to sign a three-year contract which has been on the table all season.

Geelong key forward Josh Walker is expected to lob at Carlton as part of the trade which sees Lachie Henderson become a Cat.

The Lions considered Walker but are comfortable developing ACL victim Michael Close, Jonathan Freeman and one of Josh Schache or Jacob Weitering — whoever they draft at pick No. 2

Brisbane youngster Sam Mayes is also believed to want out but is also contracted for next season.

South Australian Mayes has fielded interest from about five clubs.

Essendon is one of three clubs believed to be chasing Lions free agent Matthew Leuenberger, along with Sydney and Fremantle.

Trade whispers: the inside word on the players looking for a move

THE SYDNEY Swans' chances of securing Brisbane Lions ruckman Matthew Leuenberger have received a boost with the trade restrictions on the Sydney Swans to be eased.

Securing the free agent's signature has become a race in three with the Swans understood to be competing with Essendon and Fremantle however Leuenberger is not expected to make a decision on his future until after the finals.

With his departure almost certain, the Lions declared the contracted Stefan Martin off-limits this week and are expected to play hard-ball with any contracted players who want out.

Collingwood remains the favourite to win Lion James Aish's signature but some rival clubs suspect Hawthorn could yet swoop in late to snare the on-baller.

Aish is yet to inform the Lions that he wants a trade, but equally has given no indication that he is about to sign the three-year contract the club has had on the table for much of this year.

Speculation is that one of Aish's suitors is still participating in the finals.

The Eagles are hopeful Lewis Jetta will return to West Australia and haven't ruled out Lions' midfielder Jack Redden although satisfying the Lions' demands might be difficult. If Selwood does leave, the potential to do a deal with the Lions might depend on the compensation received.

Out-of-contract Collingwood runner Paul Seedsman could find a new home in 2016, with North Melbourne, Brisbane Lions and Adelaide all believed to be interested in the defender/wingman.

The key questions facing the Lions this off-season

Despite the mystery surrounding his intentions, James Aish still looks much more likely to go than stay.

Collingwood remains the frontrunner but other clubs are starting to panic that Hawthorn might be in the frame the longer his intentions remain unknown.

The Hawks are understood to have little space in their salary cap to make it happen but other clubs remain wary.

Matthew Leuenberger looks set to leave with the Sydney Swans, Essendon and Fremantle possible destinations.

As a free agent, he can walk and the Lions are unlikely to match any offer, as they know Martin and Leuenberger are better off plying their trade solo. They also know they will receive compensation for the 26-year-old.

The Lions will play hardball on Redden although his relationship with the coach had deteriorated before he decided to seek a fresh start, while they won't even entertain trading Martin or Mayes.

Article related to Swann interview above - Lions getting a sniff that Aish might stay

Speaking on SEN on Saturday, Lions CEO Greg Swann said Aish was genuinely weighing up his future.

"He came to our best and fairest, he went to Mad Monday, he came and got his program for the off-season," Swann said.

"We're not sure at the minute what James is doing. I think he's genuinely still weighing up what he wants to do.

"I suppose we may have misread it early that because he didn't sign, we automatically assumed he was going, but in having some discussions with him, I think he is still considering the options he's got.

"We're hopeful he'll stay."

"Tom Bell we think will maybe make a request to come home, but he's contracted," Swann said.

"Stef (Martin) is staying anyway, he's fine. He likes playing footy with us.

"We've been really clear and pretty strong on it. We're not going to let people walk out willy-nilly. We've been planning for the guys to stay.

"We'll hold them to their contract."

Interview with Peter Schwab

Few points:
- Suckling very unlikely to come
- Only makes sense to trade contracted players if it's in our favour (e.g. Redden)
- Grant hasn't entered our discussions
- Schache would be nice
- Mayes and Martin "absolutely going nowhere"

"Initially there was a discussion with Matt Suckling's management around that we couldn't take in a free agent because we thought Matty Leuenberger was going out, therefore we didn't want to cancel out the advantage we got," Schwab told ABC radio.

"But there's been other factors at play in the strategy of the club that I haven't been able to go into with them and I can't go into with anyone else."

Brisbane Lions pursuing Richmond's David Astbury

The Brisbane Lions have their eye on Richmond tall David Astbury.

It's understood the Lions are pursuing Astbury, 24, who has been starved of opportunities in a stable Tigers backline, with Alex Rance and Troy Chaplin holding a strong grip on the key defensive posts.

Astbury has one season remaining on his contract at Richmond, but is believed to be open to a move elsewhere, having played just 41 games in six seasons at Punt Road, during which he has been plagued by a variety of injuries - including a foot issue sustained in a stingray attack early this year, and a season-ending knee ailment in 2014. He has played just four AFL games since mid-2014, and spent the back half of 2015 in the VFL.

The Lions are also the favourites to secure Carlton's Tom Bell - who has expressed a desire to return to Queensland. They have also been linked to out-of-contract Collingwood defender Paul Seedsman.

Brisbane Lions set to recruit Geelong’s Jarrad Jansen, eye other trade targets

BRISBANE are set to recruit Geelong on-baller Jarrad Jansen to bolster their midfield ranks next season.

Jansen comes from the same West Australian junior club as Brisbane’s Brownlow Medal winning assistant coaches Simon Black and Shane Woewodin, as well as Eagles’ great Ben Cousins.

Lions list manager Peter Schwab also met with Carlton’s Steven Silvagni yesterday to discuss a deal for contracted Queensland-born Blue Tom Bell.

Schwab said Bell had yet to inform Carlton of his intentions but he had made the Blues aware of Brisbane’s interest should the player decide he wants to return home.

The first deal the Lions do this off-season is likely to be for Jansen.

However, they Lions remain uncertain over the future of James Aish who is giving signals he wants to remain at the club but has yet to re-open talks on the contract offer that has been on the table all year.

[On David Astbury] Schwab said the speculation was based on Leppitsch’s links with Richmond and revealed he had not met with the club yet.

“There has been no discussions, but he is one you might ask the question about because he hasn’t played this year,’’ he said.

“But he is contracted, so it will be up to Richmond.’’

Cats midfielder asks to be traded to Lions

[Jarrad Jansen] "We've been tracking his progress this year and he's developed nicely," Schwab said.

"He's been at a great club and he's a young guy looking for an opportunity. We hope we can give him that opportunity to develop in our midfield.

"The Cats are a great club to deal with, so hopefully we'll be able to do something with them (via a trade)."

Despite the Lions facing an exodus of players in recent history, including five in 2013, Schwab said he had no concerns luring the West Australian and the club was hoping to offer him a multi-year contract.

Trade SENtral: Hartlett, Astbury & Carlisle

Tigers defender on Brisbane’s radar

David Astbury could be one of a few players to go against the grain and make a move north as Brisbane try to minimise the impact of others wanting to leave.

“He has some interest from Brisbane and he has a good relationship with Justin Leppitsch so he might be one who could head there,” said Anderson.

“They’ve said that there are a few players they feel are comfortable and keen to come up to the Lions, along with possibly Tom Bell and a few others.

Magpies unlikely to get talented young Lion

"Don't forget, Collingwood has got Treloar, they've got (Jack) Crisp, they've got (Levi) Greenwood, they're not even chasing Aish because they think they're probably OK in the position," he said.

Aish is yet to inform the Brisbane Lions of his intentions for 2016 and has been acting as though he may remain at the club, attending post-season functions and picking up his post-season training plan.
