Toast 2023 Swans Board Phantom Draft

Whilst I don't think WCE take this bloke he deserves a chance

WCE take Will Lorenz

It's been a weird year for Will where he played more on the wing but his best footy has been as a pure centre clearance midfielder. He's basically what I call "best available" at this point.

WCE are done now, 3 mids and 2 talls.

Dubai Quacker you are up for Fremantle

I like Lorenz.

You're joining DQ in Port's bad books for a bit. Johnston is a good pick, a good kick, solid inside work and evasive skills on the outside, 2-way running, had me about to pull the trigger. Delean was a chance for my last pick too.
I think there are a few players that will be valued quite differently between clubs after the first 15 or so picks go in this years draft.

15? More like 5.

It will be some order of Reid, Curtin, McKercher, Walter, Sanders and after that its anyones game. I had Duursma dropping to 8 in my mock

SwansProudly sorry, just woken up.

Haven't trawled the last few pages but round 5 pick only costs me this year, so left it open for a late 'upside' pick. If still available GC pick Sam Van Rooyen.
He thinks he's a forward but I can see a defender in him. Either way, he's got enough tools

Bloods86 over to you, I'm passing anything else

Vigo Visentini | Ruck | 204cm | 99kg | Sandringham

Uniting Vigo with brother Dante is not just a nice story, Vigo has come from a volleyball background to end 2023 as one of the most in-form rucks in the draft pool. Made the National Champs for Vic Metro, had a big game against WA as the main ruck, and stepped up his hitout, marking and disposal output after the Nationals. Not a strong leap ruckman, Vigo's strength lies in his positioning and work on opponents, with taps to advantage common when he wins the contest. Vigo is also known for his work rate and impact around the ground, getting to and marking hurried opposition kicks for example. There is some work to do on composure around disposal and further development for when he's resting forward, but Port are happy to have him on board (especially since he was their top ruck choice after the first batch being talked about in/around the Top 30).

And the final pick...

Reece Torrent | Balanced Mid | 184cm | 83kg | Peel Thunder

Torrent has performed well this year at WAFL Reserves level, and at Nationals, being one of WA's better performers, after a big WAFL Colts GF display in 2022, helping Peel to victory. While not having as many gears (pace) as others, Torrent is classy and creative at his best, the type that seems to have more time to assess, before using his accurate and long-kicking left foot. Making his WAFL Seniors debut late in the year, Torrent is also a decent inside midfield talent, with a reasonably mature body helping him to deliver bumps, land or hold himself up in tackles. Port will look to improve his ball-winning capabilities, which aren't poor in any case, but with his composure and quality use, some additional touches may take him to the next level.

Port's Draft Wrap

Port has addressed, as best as it can (!), needs identified. The idea was to find young players that will begin to impact under a new coach in 2-3 years, when surely time will be up for an unsuccessful Hinkley. A hard running mid, a hybrid type, and a ruck to add to the 3 full timers on the list (with the new recruiting boss skeptical of Ivan Soldo's long term future at the club already). None of the "best available" potential sliders on Port's list made it through to their picks (arguably they only take 1 or 2 in reality).

Port may add some mature talent via the Rookie Draft, in the same or other areas of moderate need, to ensure the next coach has as much to work with in the short-medium term as possible E.g.

- Ethan Phillips (KPD, Port Melbourne) given Port's incoming personnel don't inspire confidence, and with several existing KPDs approaching or past 30 years old.

- Lachie Sullivan (Mid, Footscray Captain and VFL Coach's MVP), Angus Schumacher (Mid, East Perth, WAFL Team of the Year), or Harry Grant (Mid/Small Fwd, Magarey Medal winner from Central Districts). Shaun Mannagh (Mid/Fwd, integral part of Werribee's strong season) is also an option. All have nominated for the draft.

There are also other youngsters as rookie options that could well have been picked in the national draft, such as wingers Tarkyn O'Leary, Aiden O'Driscoll and Billy Wilson, Luke Lloyd (KPF), or Luca Slade (local, another Hybrid Mid).

Thanks for the summary SP.

I like what Carlton, Freo, Giants and Richmond did with their picks. But, DQ, it seems like you save all your love for Freo - I'm less enchanted by what you did with your Saints picks.

Of course teams like Gold Coast, North, even Hawks, couldn't go wrong and will be grinners.

Well done all. A good way of learning about the draft class.

Even if I got stuffed on bids that was fun.

.... is it too late to change my pick. I've decided to match Graham now

Hey I thought shouting you Nandos we called it even lol! On a serious note WCE should bid at 1, this is a ruthless sport make GC pay the premium and honestly why wouldn't you from a list perspective? Just lost Kennedy, Darling on his last season, they actually have mids from last year eg Elijah Hewett, etc. It won't work but bid, make GC pay and if they don't you get the bloke to replace Kennedy for the next 12 years.

If pick 1 is worth 3000 points, after taking the 20% deduction surely it costs 2400 to match, not 2013 as you have shown.

Doesn't really matter in this case as GC were always going to match the first 3 bids, regardless of the deficit. And then their final pick was going to be a Round 5 (zero point) pick regardless.
