Interesting comments. Digging through the endlessly positive comments the most interesting things were:

Ollie Dempsey is gonna play AFL.
Shannon Neale hasn't "knocked the doors down" yet.
The club loves Ted Clohesy. Expect him to be kept on the list for longer just cause of his attitude.
Willis "we know he's got the footy talent". Expect him to get a debut if he can string some form together at VFL level.
I was that same as you - really trying to decipher each comments and read as much as I can into it! certainly combining Nigel with King comment there can’t be ANY doubt that Dempsey will be in the 22. And yes I saw the language change when it got to Neale too.

The other is they love clarks attitude and it will take him a long way.

We arent talking about a player who has just walked through the doors we are talking about a player entering his fourth season of AFL football.

If you think expecting a key forward to kick 1-2 goals a game and 10-12 touches is a terrible take then i think as a club fanbase something is rotten with our standards or we are just getting defensive of certain fan favourites.

I will also ask you this: to be selected in the b22 do you have different standards based on draft selection?? Or do you base it on performance and meritt?? Because what you are saying is you base it on draft pick instead of meritt.
Because fan base expectations are united and valid to on field performance.

I’m disagreeing with your take that all players are equal once they enter the AFL. For better or worse different players have different expectations and different ceilings.

For the record, I expect Neale to perform when he plays, it’s his time and he is physically ready. He also might be performing as a forward/ruck Brad Ottens style & be lining up next to Cameron, Hawkins & Henry so the club expectations might be different from Cadman at GWS

My basis for all players are equal is the fact that to be selected in the AFL side you need to reach a certain standard and contribution which does not alter depending on your draft pick number. Contract extensions and timeframe within the system is based on talent and ability assessed once you are in the system which is regardless of your draft pick. My take is also in line with comments from premiership coach paul roos who echoed similar.

What i originally said was cadman kicked 2 goals last night took a couple of marks and got a dozen touches, and that I think this should be the level of expectation for neale when he plays this season to keep his spot.

I did not say neale and cadman will have similar careers.

Technically still preseason for us which means puff pieces are still flowing.

Head of Development, Nigel Lappin, provides an update about each of our young brigade

Ollie Henry

“… as we saw last year, a very smart decision maker. His ability to be able to recognise opportunities to get forward, get dangerous and then when he gets his chances to be able to mark the ball as well as he does, his finishing skills have been very, very impressive for us.”

Ollie Dempsey

“He’s just been someone who’s just got better with every week that he’s spent at the footy club. He’s built out a really good frame now to be able to sustain what it means to be an AFL Footballer. Unbelievably high work rate, gets from contest to contest, understands his role really well…just those little finishing touches, the things that he can do that not many others can, that’s going to excite fans for a long time…”

Shannon Neale

“He’s pretty young still, as a key position player and we know they take time. But he’s been really promising in the early games. He understands the system really well and complements the other guys around him and we hope we continues to emerge and knocks down the doors this year.”

Oli Wiltshire

“He reads the game really early, gets himself to dangerous spots an has been very smart. He’s come in, understands the systems and structures and pretty much got them down pat in the first couple of weeks.”

Ted Clohesy

“He’s just the epitome of what we want to stand for as an academy group, but also as a footy club. He values all the right things and it’s a credit to him, he’ll continue to develop because he just puts the work in and is as honest as the day is long.”

George Stevens

“He gets from contest to contest pretty well. His stoppage craft is very good for an 18 year old, but it’s only going to get better. And he combined really well with the other guys that were in their on the weekend.”

Mitch Hardie and Mitch Knevitt

“They’ve played enough footy now, that they’re starting to build some really good chemistry in and around the stoppages there. Their patterns and the systems they play away from the ball have really helped the VFL play really well in the first couple of weeks...”

James Willis

“…the most impressive thing about him, he’s just just rocked up everyday with a great day with a great attitude. Attitude to get to work and prove his body. We know he’s got the footy talent and he’s very good inside mid, with lots of power and good ball use.”

Oscar Murdoch

“He’s had a few injury niggles last year and he’s had a pretty good pre season. He’s just someone that you can just put on one of the oppositions best players and he’s hard to play on. He gets to work on them, and makes it a really difficult day for them..

Jhye Clark

“What you see from Jhye is what you get. He’s an every time competitor. Probably enjoys winning the contest more than anything, but if he’s not doing that, the thing he enjoys the next most is his ability to be able to win the ball back off the opposition, and that was really evident the other night.”

Lawson Humphries

“He brings calmness to our academy group.. he’s got a really calming influence on the group and other people. And you see that with the way he plays… he’s a really good decision maker with ball in hand.”

Emerson Jeka

“He’s come in and had a strong pre season, didn’t miss too much and he’s slotted in really well. His ability to be able to contest really strongly in the air and provide a fair bit of drive, he loves getting the ball in his hand and loves using it well.”

Oisin Mullin

“He’s got some unique abilities. His ability to shut down some of the opposition’s best players, and not just their best players, their fastest ones. And then his want and will to join into the game again.”

Connor O’Sullivan (on his experience playing against Harry McKay and Charlie Curnow)

“Fantastic experience for him. He doesn’t get overawed by that and sees that as an opportunity for growth and as a challenge that he’s willing to take on.”

Joe Furphy

“He’s a big man Joey… he’s put a lot of work into learning the nuances and the craft of the game and we’re excited about what he can deliver.”

Phoenix Foster

“We’re looking forward to him getting out there and putting his best foot forward, he’s developed a lot over his 12 months that he’s been here.”

Mitch Edwards

"He’s going to develop into a really big, strong ruckman. He loves the parts of that game that you want ruckman to love, the aerial contest, he loves hunting the ball.. when he gets the ball in his hands, he’s a really good ball user.”

Great job mate.

Honestly, what I take from this is that Phoenix, Oscar and probably Hardie and Parfitt, are all likely on their last legs at KP.

Tough business, but wouldn't surprise to see those 4 go, and then Stanley, Rohan, Tuohy and Hawk finish up too. Maybe even Bews as well. Reckon Ted and James get new contracts.

Either way, gonna be a big turnover this off season me thinks.

Hard to disagree with that assessment.

I’m off the “open training” soon.

Apparently you need to redeem a free ticket to get in (info from GFC fb page).

No link to get a ticket or whatever you need to do… I was thinking I was misunderstanding something.

But even in fb comments people are saying they can’t get tickets or are confused… the Club response on the post was that there was a link error and has been fixed.

Still looks the same to me (link doesn’t work).

Fingers crossed I get in hey.

Just have to wing it.

AFL News 2024: Geelong midfielder Tanner Bruhn urges Geelong fans to support next generation, round one, GMHBA Stadium

Young Geelong midfielder Tanner Bruhn has warned Cats fans and opposition sides not to underestimate the club's next generation.

On the eve of his 50th career game against St Kilda in Geelong's round one clash at GMHBA Stadium, the 21-year-old says he is taking on the pressure that comes with playing in the blue and white hoops.

He also recognises the expectation of maintaining Geelong's sustained success, with the Cats missing the finals last year for just the second time since 2007.

D BRIDGE it seems like Tanner's been reading your posts.

I think it's gilding the lily to expect a pick 30odd to show what a pick 1 does but the real argument for us Cats is where Neale is at right now.
He's missed some crucial development time through injury but now , at only 21yo , he looks in great shape.
He's more than capable of 1-2 goals per game and would have had that V Dons if we hadn't taken advantage from his free kick.
The other aspect is how much he's targeted by us going inside 50 , with Hawk , Jezza and OH down there he's only going to get scraps so we have to keep that in mind.
Cadman hasn't shown much to date ( from limited opportunities) and I think Neale is better compared to Thilthorpe , Mitchell Lewis or a Riccardi. Even JUH was in and out of the side for a few seasons.
Cliche - but big guys take time.
I'm bullish on Neale , let's see what he produces this season and bookmark him to see where he's at when he's 24yo ;)

Yeah I don't really see where the negativity is coming from about Neale at 21 y/o and barely been given a go at AFL level, where as most other teams (don't have the premium forward lines we have) would have persisted and given him the games he needs. Look at the amount of marks Ollie Henry dropped early last year and he's had a few seasons. Neales a beast and the composure will come. I predict he'll be kicking more goals than Henry in a couple years.

Back from open training.

The stadium looks absolutely top notch and is something to be proud of for sure.

Semi noteworthy things considering it was just an easy open to the public sesh.

*Bowes not with main group 😬

* Ollie Henry is totally fine.

* Rohan not suited up at all (miles off).

* Guthrie jogging very slowly in background.

* Holmes/Duncan training with backs (MOC + Touhy not with backs).

* Lawson Humphries looks as if he could be a left or right footer.

* Willis actually is training before the start of the season (unheard of).

Neale spent zero time from what I could see training with rucks Conway and Stanley and was with the forward group (no surprise).

Mullins dominating?

My boy Lawson actually did my head in... He was alternating left and right foot at one point... And when they did some dribble kicks at goal he went on his left, then later his right.. No idea what his natural foot is.

I did see Bowes at the start involved in some drills but the groups were rotating and I must admit I didn't notice him away from anyone else

Thanks!

Feels like every time I read something about Lawson Humphries I get more excited.

The Bowes thing is concerning

We are going to need more doritos

I must admit I thought he was a left footer and needed to just take another look over his YouTube highlight video to confirm that he is.

But the first 3 kicks I saw him take today he took with his right and they all looked as if he was a right footer and it wasn’t his opposite… 1st kick had to be taken on his right due to the angle but the 2nd and 3rd I thought he could have taken with either… and went with right.

He is obviously handy on each leg.

Regarding Bowes I will say I turned up a tad late and didn’t see him and at (but I wasn’t looking for him or ticking of guys to make sure they were training) but someone mentioned in another thread they saw him doing some potential fitness test of to the side so I assume he wasn’t training after I arrived… but, maybe he was and I just never noticed him…. But I’m not 100% sure.

I was wrangling a 4 year old who couldn't sit still so I didn't take heaps in.. I remember seeing Bowes when I got there in a drill and actually thinking how fit and strong he looked.. But then that group moved and I didn't notice, so it could be something, could be nothing... Could just be a watch this space.. He was definitely fully stripped and involved to some extent but it wasn't high intensity stuff either at that stage
