Andrews Government preparing for backflips

Also everyone can see the benefit of the ew link, but are debating its priority over other things

That and lib government claiming it will resolve congestion everywhere. It wont

It wont even resolve eastern freeway congestion long term

The second river crossing has a lot of merit. Wouldnt be surprised it that goes ahead under the abbott--andrews combination

A classic example of a strawman argument. Yew iz agenst one road sew yew want ALL ROADS DESTRUCTIONED!!!"11

Exactly, and not what I said. i said the citylink caused problems because it was done cheaply. They should have built three tunnels for redundancy and tidal traffic flows

If it was the case that Labor had given EW bi partisan support and only removed it last minute last August when the project was so advanced then the Napthine govt would have been more than entitled to get the contract signed including compensation to protect the developer. Anything this else would have truly signalled to the business world Victoria was closing up for business.

The Eddington List - can you confirm or otherwise that the level crossings do not appear on it?
Who cares if it was on it or not-its a top strategy to remove congestion.
Haha you live in Adelaide? You can drive throughout the city of Adelaide at peak hour-no probs. Different kettle of fish.
If you don't drive on our roads, sorry, but you have no idea what it is like- public transport is the only effective solution and it has been obvious for a long, long time and through many governments of different persuasions. They keep building roads because it lines the pockets of their mates, not because it is the answer!

you bothered bloody driving in Adelaide during peak. Port road really was woeful. Walked two ks out to the soccer and the loudmouth in the car who shouted stuff at me just passed when I arrived.

Interesting and informative p[ost., Thank you.

I can't find the level crossing demolitions in Eddington's long list of infrastructure to dos.

EW is a rolls royce project. With eastern now linked all the way to Rosebud, extending it to the west is screaming to be done along with the Tullamarine project. It's a no brainer for a modern progressive state like the ones previous progressive Labor govts Cain, Kirner, Bracks and Brumby used to run.

Daniel would be wise to find a way to do it. Throwing it under the bus would make him truly the Mayor of Victoria as someone commented during the campaign.

Well there were terrible forecasts about every arterial improvement I have lived through in attempts to stop development, and then there were forever complains from the same people afterwards.

If this is the way Daniel goes, he will end up presiding over a rust bucket.

I don't agree on the eastern portion of east west, a standard cost benefit analysis puts it below 1. It's only the additional factors that were asked to be considered that came from government that put it above 1. The western portion however is a much better idea and all reports and analysis rated it the most critical section and a good cost benefit ratio. This should be built and was originally the priority, Labor even backed this section originally. I'm not sure why they pulled out of backing this, I guess its much easier to stay on message if you just say no east west link. Poor policy there.

There were rumors that private industry would build the east west link at no cost to the public if it could toll it and include a CBD exit. I'm not sure why that didn't get looked into further as that would address the main issue with the current eastern section. I would back the project with a CBD exit as that would actually address the main cause of the eastern congestion, Hoddle St.

The eastern needs to be hooked up to the M80, that would achieve the exact same purpose as the current eastern section of the east west link. Ie airport trips and a link for trucks from the Hume.

Well, given Victoria only gets 13% of the national infrastructure budget, perhaps you bloodsucking leeches over there can pay the $3 billion we require for the rail link??

13% is an enormous slice of the national infrastucture budget for such a tiny little state.

Haha well you will go to the soccer.
Have driven in Adelaide in peak hour-yep- your circumstance is probs the exception. In any case, it illustrate that roads don't really work a lot of the time and you all would have been better off on the trains having a pleasant, comfortable journey.

Lots of public transport runs on roads, as does freight distribution.

Im firmly between the camps. Public transport is a specialised thing which can never perform every function

Robot cars/taxis however, that will be different

Suspect a good train service could perform a lot though.

With a significantly higher population and population density. You Western Australians should be thankful to get more than a dirt road where it doesn't service something useful to the country like a mine, an LNG facility or a road out of WA.

I have lived in Melbourne all my life.

Victoria used to be the jewel in the Commonwealth. I don't want it turning into a rust bucket state like SA or Tasmania which is where we seem to be headed - especially with the election of 2 Greens to the lower house.

And also the 11 independents the govt now has to negotiate with to get anything through the upper house - an insanity I gather also self inflicted on his government by Daniel Andrews. Unreal.

We are lucky to get that as thanks for propping up Australia with our 55% of all exports, royalties and GST (and ignoring we have Australias fastest growing population by far)... so from where I sit Victoria is Australia's version of the Vatican. Full of mollycoddled non contributers inner city green/labor/unionists who have no life experience outside the city walls. With notable exceptions certainly make no meaningful contribution to the country they reside. No need for another $3b gift.

Yes, back when most of the mining and exploration companies were based there because of the long history and association starting with the gold rushes and petroleum in Bass Strait. That investment activity has shifted to more prospective areas for mining and oil and gas.

Nothing special about Victoria, it was simply the WA of its time.

This is another road versus rail debate. Lots of articles have been written on the demise & under investment in rail, especially for freight, in Australia.
Why Abbott refused to show any interest in rail is beyond sense. It is the most efficient way to move people in big cities. So why not work to improve rail, thus take some pressure off the road system?.
I guess if it gets too much, people can just leave the cities & move to more regional areas for a better lifestyle.

Well for crying out loud GJ, why pretend to be from SA of all places!
Perhaps give Dan more than a week in office before you write him off. And let's face it, he couldn't possibly do as much damage as Kennett's short term gain for long term pain, has done if he tried!

Its more the nature of the beast and peak hours. Either overfull or almost emply

OK you can make people feel more aecure at night but people have to get off and use another mode where they arent safe, or dont feel safe.

Rightly or wrongly, people feel safer in their own cars

There has been a somewhat-successful transition to the education industry, which is Australia's 3rd largest industry and largest value-add industry (yes, I know current Libs don't believe in value-add industries).
Pinning all our hopes on being good at digging is not the best plan long term economic stability; we need to support industries beyond mining and our urban centres are still where most of our national innovation comes from.

Where would the western link on its own have finished up? Sounds rather bizarre to me.

Aw - that line is meant to be saints, cut off when I did it.
You wouldn't get me to live in rustbucket Adelaide even if you paid me millions.
Haha -you are a Sainter? My son too.
Adelaide has beautiful limestone? buildings, lots of lovely parkland, and of course the home of Haigh's chocolates-so can't be too bad!

My point is that the 'jewels' in Australia's crown have been as a result of primary industry. Victoria's previous pre eminent position had nothing to do with being open for business, a nonsense term used by numpties.

If it wasn't Tony Abbott's baby KuruJane wouldn't be so strongly in favour of the East West link.

Yeh but he is not Tony and Tony is perfect, accountable, ethical, wonderful - in fact the greatest prime minister we ever had. He also has a huge schlong BTW the rumour about his wife leaving him are lies all terrible lies!!!

Jane is correct: left wing males are effeminate misogynist degenerates who don't have the can do attitude of her heroes - Dick Cheney, George Bush, John Howard, and that he man Scott Morrison - what a stud muffin

I am surprised she has not started a thread how the torture program which was started by her beloved Neo-Cons was the greatest thing to ever happen in the free world - remember when she used to style herself as a "real leftist"

The news is that Victoria IS a rust bucket state. The latest FTA will hasten the rusting process. So start digging, you need to find more Gold, or coal.

Thats your future now Abbott has lowered the draw bridge. It has SFA to do with state politics, its national & international events.
