Draft Expert Davo-27's 2024 Draft Thread

I’m fine with father sons, but the rest of the imbalances can go in the bin.
Read, "I'm fine with a system that may randomly benefit my club, but anything that we don't have access to can get in the bin."

There are technically now 5 footy states, is it fair that 4 of those states won't see a grand final played there in the next 50 years?

The competition is full of imbalances, including that 55% of the draftees come from one state, but all the victorians here are up in arms over an imbalance that is growing the game outside of victoria. Fine, bin the academies, but stop all the Vic mummy boys refusing to move interstate or going home after their first contract, because it's for the good of the game.

Don't know, Swann didn't name them all.

You have a father son thread on your own board with a link to a recent Geelong Advertiser article about the 20+ kids from the next 4 drafts who are training with you over summer.
You might want to fact check before you reply in future.

Now it's 20+. I wish you blokes would make up your mind.

Try about 6 who are unlikely to make it. Some don't even play the sport.

And Northern academies far outweigh any father/son rule.

I am a bit traditionalist its been going on long enough now to be a bit of a tradition now. Just ask the sons of farthers they are over the moon to play for the team that their dad played for. We may have missed on a few good ones recently but pretty happy with who we ended up with instead in George and Harry. Who have we got coming up briztoon and were are they likely to go. It's got nothing at all to do with who we may or may not be getting because of it. And for the Cats farther sons good on them.
There's literally a father son thread on every board, you don't have to ask me, you guys are discussing it on your own board.

Swann said 32 over the next 5 drafts in a recent SEN interview that you already discussed on your own board, in your father son thread.

The 20+ are kids listed in the article for the next 4 drafts.

How many are likely to make it has no bearing on the argument.

Just for the Lions academy, we have somewhere between 40 and 50 kids in our level 1 group each year.

Take out Fletcher and Ashcroft as father sons, and our academy has produced how many kids over the past 5 drafts (2019-2023)?

2019:
Keidean Coleman (who was an overager 19 year old, after being passed over by every club in 2018, his draft year).
2020:
Blake Coleman (delisted 2023).
Carter Michael (Cat B rookie. Academy Selection).
2021:
n/a
2022:
Shadeau Brain (Cat B rookie. Zone Selection. Passed over in that National Draft, where we had no right to match).
2023:
Bruce Reville (Cat B rookie. Zone Selection. 22 year old. ex academy kid, then VFL top up, who had been passed over that last 4 drafts).

That's a scary list.

Who the hell is Swann and where is that article?

2024 - Alfie Wojcinski
2025 - Jagger Mooney
2025 - Boston Riccardi
2026 - Jack Graham
2027 - Oscar King
2027 - Monty Wojcinski
2028 - James Taylor

That's our next 5 drafts re; father/sons.

Nowhere near 20 and sure as hell nowhere near 32.

Most are longshots to even make it.

I hope you have 20 and they are all guns

By parity, you mean return of the VFL.
How could you ask that question with a straight face.

Your mob will be getting a top 5 pick in 2024 for chump change… possibly the number 1 pick! If I said I’d give you the Hawks 1st pick in 2024 for Will Ashcroft, you would rightly laugh at that.

The Lion’s have already received a top 2 pick (who may have been considered the best in the draft but for him doing his ACL) for chump change in 2022.

Then there is Fletcher who, you would agree, looks a gun.

And all of this provided to Brisbane while they just competed in last years Grand Final.

How can other teams compete? How can Freo and StKilda compete with the bias of talent.

please know: I do not include the Hawks, Carlton or Adelaide in this whinge fest. All of these teams will do well despite the northern states obvious and continued hand outs (we don’t talk about the Shinbeggers).

Don’t worry briztoon , I am not even close to finishing on this.

Suffice to say, I would not, and never would want your intentionally incendiary idea to take root.

But I know you, what you do, for Bigfooty’s sake.

so… For movie buffs! “Let the blo0d run free”.

Not sure what the point of your post is.

Maybe you missed where I stand on father sons and academies.

I’m firmly in the “get rid of everything” camp.

And that includes free agency compensation.

Have a completely unadulterated draft.

Most of you guys & girls follow someone in the NBA, from what I can gather, of the 30 teams in the two divisions the top 16 make the playoffs, the 14 that don't, go into a draft lottery. Now since there is only 2 rounds in the draft, that's 60 players that can get picked up, however you can trade picks and even trade picks for money?

But no father/sons, no academies, so whoever gets the number 1 draft pick, gets the best young player, end of story. My question is does anyone think this system is better/worse or just not fair to be used for AFL football?

I've got a feeling there are going to be a few changes in either 2024/25 for our draft system, it will be modified and that will include academies and also trading, now whether we go down the route of trading money for picks is another matter, but I think a lot of things
will be tossed around between all the clubs and see what we're comfortable with, that's fair. What do you think Davo-27?

The geelong addy pump anyone up geelong related (even if they are barely BFL standard) for clicks id pay no attention there. Most of the 16yo sons dont look draftable (like your baxter mensch types in previous years that we were never going to take) and the ones younger than 16 its too early to tell. I dont see any obvious gold diamond players in there.

I'm a draft nuffy but I reckon 2024 looks a fair bit weaker than 2023.
Nup no way. 2023 was an incredibly weak year especially for Vic Metro, many CTL teams In Melbourne were full of bottom age kids as the top agers were so weak. VM will be very strong this year

Are Port Adelaide going to get two Burgoynes in this draft class? Both Rome (Peter) and Ky (Shaun) are draft eligible this year, no?

you can add in hawthorn for Shaun's son. He'll have to decide.
Eligible but I would have thought living in Adelaide, Shaun currently working for Port and first cousin Jase currently playing for Port as well as another first cousin Rome looking like he's also about to join Port would just about guarantee Ky Burgoyne will end up choosing F/S for Port and not Hawthorn (assuming he's good enough to be drafted).

Don't forget, Ky would be a third generation player for Port Adelaide after his grandfather Peter Burgoyne Sr debuted for the club nearly 50 years ago and his father/uncle were stars in the club's historic first AFL premiership 20 years ago. His grandfather on the other side of the family (Greg Phillips) was also a Port Adelaide legend and his aunty Erin Phillips was captaining Port's AFLW team last year.

Hawthorn can't offer that kind of family connection and we know the family connection means a lot to Port Adelaide people.

Yeah, if he is good enough; he may opt for PA for those reasons you mentioned. But if he wanted to venture outside Adelaide and try something on his own, he could opt for Hawthorn. The option is there at least.

That's true. Wait and see what Ky wants to do but if he cares at all about family connections then I think it's fairly obvious which club he's going to pick. Also, Hawthorn has come under fire for the way they've treated their indigenous players in the past so that's potentially another deterrant for Ky since he is indigenous himself.

Side note, I wonder if there's any kind of plan for Ky or Rome Burgoyne to play for Port's SANFL team this year. We know Crows' top F/S prospect Tyler Welsh has been given permission to play for their SANFL team so shouldn't Ky and/or Rome be given the same opportunity?

Regardless still way too early to call. So what are your thoughts then on it
From purely a VM/CTL view, it was an incredibly weak year for top agers compared to past years and this permeated through school footy as well. There just wasn’t the talent there like previous years and the kids that were highly touted weren’t that good compared to the bottom age kids coming through.

so i thought i would start my thread for 2024 based on u16's championships, state rep games and u18's leagues and who i think has the ability to perform at the state rep levels and potentially AFL level, i will name a top 90 who i am keen to see more of next year and im sure i will find another dozen or so next year in the early rounds or through-out the year.

Just some thoughts about next years crop and where i have them ranked atm

Sid Draper - im unsure if he goes as high as i have him here, i noticed his kicking was a bit off and sometimes flat, this could see him slide out of the top 5, although his accumulation will keep him high and his work rate is good, but i have a few small doubts on if he goes top 2

Josh Smillie - love his height and how he plays, but probably needs to average more disposals and get more run in his legs to maintain a top 5 spot

Tyler Welsh - his 191cm height is awkward, if he gets to 193cm that would be enough to be confident in him being a quality kpp, he has the game for it, just needs that bump in height or length of arms to be confident at the next level, if he stays at 191cm might slide to pick 10?

Lombard - could end up top 3-4, he is top quality and potentially elite, i have him at 7 atm, but if he continues 2023 form where he proved at every jump in difficulty that he was up to the task and then some, he could easily go top handful

Nancarrow - another one that has a great kpp set of skills but is 191cm, if he stays at 191cm could slide out of 1st round? great hops and gets good air time

Shananhan, O'Farrell, Gerryn and Faull - look like they could be the top KPP(Tyler Welsh and Nancarrow, Joel Cochcrane?) in this draft pool having the height and games to rise to the top of the draft rankings, wait and see, Shanahan is 192cm but has fantastic contested marking

Penry - has played well in the ruck, could be the top ruck prospect with Gerryn?

Retschko and Johnson - these 2 are classy players could go anywhere from 10-40?

Camporeale brothers should go late 1st round, unless 1 pops off in draft year

Moraes, Nguyen and Kako - easily inside the top 40, maybe even top 30 for all 3, so no NGA possibility as it is now

Montgomery - should go in the 2nd round somewhere for Port, good run on the outside and goal kicking potential from half back/wing

AFL can cancel father/son, NGA and Academies in 2024 or 2025 and be done with it. Put a 5 year freeze for all categories and see what happens in the open draft.

We'll end up with Levi Ashcroft playing for North Melbourne, a Hodge playing for Fremantle or say a Logan Daniher (Essendon father son) playing for West Coast etc.

Depends on the kid.

Number of eligible kids get overlooked by interstate clubs as they don't pass the 'go home factor sniff test.

Chances are father sons heavily linked to Vic clubs would be overlooked for safer options of similar quality.
