THE Casey Scorpions will start talks with Melbourne this week over the future of senior coach Rohan Welsh.
Welsh’s two-year contract has expired and he is keen to continue, but he will wait to see what is put before him.
The former Carlton forward is a part-time coach but the Demons may ask Casey to make it a full-time position and for the coach to come from their panel of assistants.
Under the alignment agreement the Scorpions ultimately make the appointment.
“It’s a little bit up in the air at the moment,’’ Welsh said.
“I’m waiting for Casey to talk to Melbourne to see what their plans are.
“They may go down the path of the Box Hill model, have a development coach run the VFL side. So we’ll see how the job description looks after they (Casey and Melbourne) have spoken.
“But I do want to stay involved and I’m in a position where I could do it full-time.’’....

Saints look to ex-Blues recruiting boss

St Kilda are expected to hire former Carlton recruiting boss Wayne Hughes to a new role overseeing the club's recruiting of seasoned players.

Hughes, who worked at St Kilda in the late 1980s and early '90s in recruiting, is close to being appointed to a role as the club's "pro-scout" in which he will assess potential free agents and other AFL-listed players.

Why the HELL would we want somebody involved in THAT tradewreck?!

I think I just vomitted a little in my mouth...

And as well as the appointment of Hughes for recruiting seasoned players, the article states states that we are also hiring another talent scout for junior talent:

"The imminent appointment is part of a revamp of St Kilda's recruiting department, which will also add another full-time scout who focuses entirely on junior, untried talent – the vast majority of draftees – for the 2015 season."

This is why I'm here also. Can anyone make me feel better about this?

I just had a quick look through a good number of the other clubs websites and found that the Dees, North, Crows and Hawks all have someone listed as a "pro scout". I didn't check all the clubs and some don't have all their staff listed, but it seems like it's not a bullshit role.

Because the successes and failings of each player is solely the fault of the recruiter and no one else.

Didn't mean that at all. Was just stating trades/selections during his time at Carlton not blaming them on just him.

But Carlton supporters seem to think he was crap.

Makes it hard to distinguish between poor recruiting and poor development. Those players may have all been highly rated at the beginning..

He'll be in a almost totally different role here anyway.

He'll probably have no say over our drafting and I doubt he'd have much control over exactly which 'pro' players we go after and any associated trades. I think he'll mainly be a way to thoroughly collect info on and liaise with prospective current players for Trout and Co. to help base their decisions on. That's just my take on it though.

I wonder how much room they've had to do their job there. Seems like a shite place to work, where your employer is openly trying to find your replacement

When was he at freo? Was cuddles and schwab there then?

Spot on. Pro scout has more wheeling and dealing than a recruiter IMO. I always wondered if we lost a lot of the sales man pitch when we lost watters and now ameet has less time for it. Would be good to have someone who can sweet talk player managers and players. Really sell the club and drag some talent out

Personally couldn't care if they're s**t at identifying talent let trout and co evaluate them. All I care about is that they convince targets that we are better than the 17 other clubs

I wouldn't put Wayne Hughes near anything involved with selecting junior players again. Seemed to have a fetish with taking players who were super-elite in one aspect (Yarran's speed, Watson's kicking, Bootsma's uh ... um ... oh) and lacking in others.

He can pick solid fringe players from the lower leagues. Curnow and Rowe are great in their roles and Everitt is good. Laidler could've made it too, before his ongoing knee. You'll probably cop some stick for hiring Hughes, but one thing he can do is find draft bargains with late and rookie picks. Just a shame he burned nearly every pick in the first three rounds in his time with Carlton.

Is this a job for a mate? Richo spent two years at the blues under Ratten.
Nothing wrong with that if you think your mate is well qualified i suppose .
I remember hearing a few negative rumours about the Trout yrs ago when he was working with Dennis Pagan.
Things like he had no balls and was just a 'yes' man to anything Pagan said.
But so far i think most of us are very happy with Trout.
Weve made some real positive moves at our club recently so im happy to think that we know what we are doing in hiring Hughes.
