She got Thurlow bang on for Geelong in 2012 when hardly anyone even mentioned him.
But only the day before or morning of the draft wasn't it?

I like what I read about Mitch McGovern, the younger brother of the player who had a 'break out' season with the Eagles. Apparently Mitch is bigger that his older brother, mobile and strong overhead mark. Possible future CHF.

He is trialling in this weekend's WA state combine.

Ok... Let's see who we can get.... and why....

Pick 14.... Jacko Nelson (187-80)... To put it in simple terms... Falcons best player IMO.. Heart and soul....

Pick 21.... Tyler Keitel (194-82)... Our CHB-FB-Swingman in 3 years time...

Pick 35.... Oscar McDonald (196-88)... Another CHN-FB-Swingman in 3 years time...

Pick...99th... Daniel Butler.... WRECKING BALL from Ballarat!!

Why No Mids you may ask?? Well one...... Free Agency must and will be embraced...

With Danger-Mouse in tow next year...

Add to that Hartman will be a key rotation next year... with Thurlow, McCarthy, Lang and Jansen having all 15 plus games into them in 2015...
We shall be in a good position in 2016...

Let the REBUILD begin....

Don't think you'd need to give up pick 14 to get Nelson. Possibly even available at 35 if you want him.

The consensus poll so far, in order of preference per pick starting from A) onwards:

Pick 14:
A) Goddard
B) Cockatoo / Laverde
C) Weller / De Goey / Ahern / Pickett / Nelson

Pick 21:
A) Blakely
B) Cockatoo / Keitel
C) Marchbank / McDonald / Garlett / Neal-Bullen / Weller / De Goey / Ahern / Miller

Pick 35:
A) McDonald
B) Blakely / McGuinness / Giles / Garlett / Neal-Bullen / Weller / DeGoey / Ahern / Gore / Daniel / Markov

Aside from the top 4 this draft and Moore, I can see most of the top KPDs (Goddard, Durdin, Lever and Marchbank) will be selected in first round.

Given there appears to be a bias towards selecting larger mids/utilities because of the importance of contested footy and clearance work, then I think the larger mid/utilities like Laverde, Blakely, DeGoey, Cockatoo , Ellis (185cm and above) will attract a premium and I think they most likely will be picked up in the first round.

I could see the following smaller mids/utilities like Weller, Pickett, Ahern, Smith, Duggan also being selected in or just after the first round, but I wouldn't be surprised if a couple drift out to pick 30.

Like your thinking. Very good selections. Lets hope a few come to fruition.

In terms of the top mids this draft I think it's Petracca, Brayshaw, Heeney, Steele, Weller and Blakely.

Blakely should be available at pick 14 and possibly by 21. Weller could slip to 14.

I like McGovern a lot but I see two issues with him, firstly he is really a third round onwards pick and we may not have one (for example if we end up with 3 picks inside 35 and trade out 3rd rounder for Newton I think 35 will be our last pick) so he may not work for us unless he gets to the rookie draft.

Secondly does he have the same ability to play well at CHB that his brother does? One thing we definitely don't need is tall forwards with Clark and Walker and Kersten, we need a bit of everything else but KPF is probably the only thing we dont need to draft.

If we could get Weller and Blakely I think we will do fairly ok out of the Christensen trade long term (even though next year will really hurt), I rate both of those two quite highly.

I'm pretty certain the top 6 picks will involve:
Petracca, Wright, McCartin, Brayshaw, Lever, Durdin.

Blues pick 7 - KPD. KPF. Utility or Mid. Goddard, Laverde, Blakely, Weller.

GCFC pick 8 - Laverde, Weller or Goddard.

Pies pick 9 - Moore.

Crows pick 10 - likely to go a KPD like Goddard or Marchbank (Rutten replacement).

WCE pick 11 - Outside speed - Pickett. Ahern and Weller in mix. Cockatoo outside chance here.

Tigers pick 12 - Similar to WCE above. Wouldn't be surprised if they went a DeGoey (they like the tough players).

Freo pick 13 - Blakely (Mundy replacement, WA kid) or Goddard / Marchbank (McPharlin replacement).

Cats pick 14 - Best avail of Goddard, Marchbank, Blakely, Weller, even Cockatoo. Duggan as a small midfielder and defender in mix.

GCFC pick 15 - Height and athleticism as forward/mid in Langford or tagging/shutdown like Vickers-Willis.

NM pick 16 - Best available of above or Cockatoo.

Port pick 17 - Really hard to say given their list is pretty strong across the ground. Likely to be traded to Essendon for Ryder.

Sydney pick 18 - Heeney.

GWS pick 19 - Losing Frost and Jaksch, they may go for a KPD here, or a defender/mid. Vickers-Willis, Duggan, Marchbank and McDonald in mix.

Dons pick 20 - Outside speed. Cockatoo, Smith, Pickett, Ahern.

Cats pick 21 - Blakely, Cockatoo, McDonald, Marchbank, Neale-Bullen

I don't think Freo will pick another mid when they have a very good player like Sheridan who can't break into their side. I would say they go tall which pushes a good midfielder down to us, which is helpful.

Not a hope in hell he lasts that long 35??.... Any one that follows the falcons or the U-18 comp knows this guy....
I would at a stretch says he might last to 21... But if my info is correct... The Bombers have a real liking for this kid...

Nelson is a very good chance to last to 35. Nothing against the kid as I like him but would be very surprised if he goes in the first round.

This kid is class, but he doesn't rack up possessions. See him going between picks 20 - 40. Unless he fills a specific need of a club then he may go higher.

Mmm... Pick 20ish?? ...so 6-10 picks earlier than expected... just like Lang and Thurlow... Picked, up to 10 spots earlier than expected...
looks like "groundhog day" then??
Either way... Whoever Swells selects is good enough for me... even though his strike rate has taken a bit of a dive of late..

Last 5 years, where Wells got it right:

42 - Kolojashnij. Despite not debuting at top level, am convinced he'll make it.
15 - Menzel. Injuries aside.
77 - Hartman. Bargain mid/fwd.
28 - Duncan.
23 - Guthrie.
40 - Bundy
42 - Vardy. Injuries aside.
42 - Motlop
37 - GHS
34 - Kersten
48 - Murdoch
49 - T Hunt

Whilst I think these will make it, jury still out at top level:
16 - Lang
36 - Jansen
15 - Smedts
32 - Hamling

Where he has or may have got it wrong
15 - Brown
33 - Gillies

Considering we have rebuilt with mainly late 1st round to 3rd round picks in the national draft, I think Wells has done his job.

2nd round draft picks and beyond - Bargains:

It's hard not to look closely at the SA U18 engine this draft. Two players that might suit the Cats that may slip to pick 35 and beyond:

Alex Neale-Bullen
Reasonably quick off the mark, evasive off the first few steps.
182cm, 77kgs. Can play year 1.
Can kick on both sides, but not a penetrating kick, can turn it over under pressure.
Clearance and stoppage specialist, but looks like he can run and carry.
Elite endurance.

Dean Gore
183cm 86kgs. Ready made player
Explosive off the step.
Stoppage and clearance specialist.
Penetrating kick, scored well at kicking tests at combine.
Standing leap, indicating explosive attributes.
Endurance is just above average (14+ beep).
Most phantom draft profiles suggest there is not much improvement left in Gore given his physique and style of play. I beg to differ, I think his endurance can be lifted and so to his possessions from an increased work rate. He can dob goals outside 50m on the run, and can really take off when he arches his back. His tackling sticks. Ready made prospect in my mind, could be a bargain pick up. He looks like he is more effective with ball in hand in comparison to Neale-Bullen, a big call!

On Dean Gore, He's definitely one I'd take, has played extremely well in senior SANFL.

Hasn't got much improvement, what a load of rubbish at 18yrs of age, ...the geniuses made similar stupid statements about Luke Dunstan last year!
Or do we prefer draftee's that'll take 3 or 4 years before they can play senior footy?
Very powerful inside mid, something we need to improve on.

Agreed. I think what is under-rated with Gore is his kicking and tackling are weapons. For a contested ball player, I think his vision and quick hands are often overlooked. This kid is a bit under the radar.

14 - Goddard

When lonergan retires we are in trouble, kolo is a 3rd tall and hamling probably won't make it. That is why we need to go the 196cm full back in Goddard who is perfectly suited to that negating fb role on the no.1 big forwards. Goddard, kolo and Taylor will be a good 3 pillar defence in 2017 onwards.

21 - blakley

I still feel sick that this is all we are accepting for bundy by seemingly willing to be bent over without a fight. Blakley is a similar clearance player who uses it well and quite evasive in the stoppages. Is a chance to be available here and could play 5 games in 2015, has senior WAFL experience.

Knowing wells, these guys will be available but we will probably go 2 players most other recruiters rate in the 30s and 40s (which might work out but also as we watch the likes of Goddard and blakley flourish at other clubs).
Agree Straun, would love if we got these 2 guys
