Heard this quite a bit during trade week. "Get rid of Player X because he won't be part of our next premiership!"

But who will be?

We are 4 years on from our last premiership. Equivalent years are 1998 and 2010.

1998 List (there may be inaccuracies. I noticed a few in the 2022 list I copy and pasted that I manually fixed)

Jason Ball
Drew Banfield
Michael Braun
Ben Cousins
Jaxon Crabb
Andrew Donnelly
Tony Evans

I've bolded those who became premiership players in 2006, 8 years later.

The 2010 list:

Mitch Brown
Sam Butler
Dean Cox
Bradd Dalziell
Brad Ebert
Andrew Embley
Darren Glass
Ashton Hams
Ashley Hansen
Shannon Hurn
Brett Jones
Jordan Jones
Josh Kennedy
Daniel Kerr
Mark LeCras
Quinten Lynch
Eric Mackenzie
Beau Maister
Chris Masten
Patrick McGinnity
Ben McKinley
Nic Naitanui
Mark Nicoski
Matt Priddis
Matt Rosa
Will Schofield
Adam Selwood
Scott Selwood
Brad Sheppard
Luke Shuey
Ashley Smith
Matthew Spangher
Koby Stevens
Lewis Stevenson
Andrew Strijk
Tom Swift
Beau Waters
Callum Wilson

Again, I've bolded those who became premiership players in 2018, 8 years later.

So 5 players in 1998 became premiership players in 2006. Where they drafted:

Drew Banfield - Pick 1, 1992. Reigning Premiers and we traded our way to Pick 1. It was a more innocent time.
Michael Braun - Pick 53, 1996
Ben Cousins - Pre-draft F/S selection, 1995. Under current rules, would likely go Pick 1. Or at the VERY least, top 5
Rowan Jones - Pick 28, 1997
David Wirrpanda - Compensation Pick for losing Tony Godden to Fremantle :straining:

The circumstances around how three of those five (Banfield, Cousins, Wirrpanda) became Eagles simply would not happen today. We would splurge on Cousins under the current rules, but we got him for free in 1996.

If our rebuild truly began from when we next missed finals, that was 2000-2001. Here's who we picked up in those two years who became premiership players:

Daniel Kerr
Chris Judd
Mark Seaby
Ashley Hansen
Quinten Lynch

That's 10 players from the 2006 premiership side.

6 players in 2010 became premiership players in 2018. Where were they drafted:

Shannon Hurn - Pick 13, 2005
Josh Kennedy - Originally Pick 4, 2005. Traded to West Coast via Carlton
Mark LeCras - Pick 37, 2004
Chris Masten - Pick 3, 2007.
Will Schofield - Pick 50, 2006
Luke Shuey - Pick 18 (Priority), 2008

And of course Naitanui (Pick 2, 2008), Brad Sheppard (Pick 7, 2009) and Mackenzie (Pick 29) missed through injury.

We'd already been rebuilding since the 2007 draft by the time 2010 started, finished dead last, and picked up the following premiership players in one hit:

Andrew Gaff
Jack Darling
Scott Lycett
Jeremy McGovern

That's 9 players from the 2018 premiership side, plus another 3 that were integral to that side (Naitanui, Gaff, Sheppard).

Which brings us to the sorry state of our list in 2022:

Oscar Allen
Brayden Ainsworth
Tom Barrass
Rhett Bazzo
Aaron Black
Greg Clark
Tom Cole
Campbell Chesser
Jamie Cripps
Jai Culley
Jack Darling
Angus Dewar
Hugh Dixon
Liam Duggan
Harry Edwards
Luke Edwards
Jake Florenca
Luke Foley
Andrew Gaff
Stefan Giro
Brady Hough
Shannon Hurn
Callum Jamieson
Jamaine Jones
Tom Joyce
Tim Kelly
Josh Kennedy
Zac Langdon
Jeremy McGovern
Declan Mountford
Patrick Naish
Nic Naitanui
Jackson Nelson
Xavier ONeill
Sam Petrevski-Seton
Jack Petruccelle
Jack Redden
Willie Rioli
Josh Rotham
Liam Ryan
Dom Sheed
Luke Shuey
Luke Strnadica
Zane Trew
Jake Waterman
Connor West
Bailey Williams
Jack Williams
Isiah Winder
Alex Witherden
Elliot Yeo

This time I've bolded those drafted last year, when we missed finals for the first time since 2018. The start of the rebuild.

In both 1998 and 2010 it took us another 8 years to win our next premiership. Today, that means 2030. Who on that 2022 list will still be around in 2030? And will it take us 8 years? 2006 team included a compensation pick, a free f/s pick, priority picks and a host of rookies that simply don't exist that deep into the draft anymore. 2018 also included priority picks, the long term return from losing the best player in the competition, and one Jeremy McGovern.

History suggests 5/6 players might still be running around in 2030:

Allen?
Bazzo?
Chesser? (hasn't even ***** started running, let alone still running in 2030)
Culley?
Hough?

With no f/s freebies, compensation picks, priority picks, stupid clubs handing us Pick 1 for peanuts or rookie revelations, how the * are we going to turn the worst team in West Coast history into a premiership side in 8 years using today's drafting rules?

I can't help but see how many top 5 picks litter the lists, or at least would have been top 5 picks if using the current rules too: Banfield, Cousins, Wirrpanda, Judd, Kennedy, Masten, Naitanui, Gaff.

Now we're pinning our hopes on the likes of Oscar Allen (Pick 21), Campbell Chesser (Pick 14), Brady Hough (Pick 31), Jai Culley (midseason draft), Pick 2, Pick 8, Pick 12 etc.

I'm feeling rather pessimistic at how long this is going to take given the composition of the current squad, and the lack of high end quality coming through.

Someone make me feel better about how we turn this around without going full Melbourne and being s**t for a decade or more. Finish last next year and smash next years super draft like it's 2010 and we'll be back on track?

Ugh.

I didn't read your whole post, but I remember feeling despondent around 2014, early 2015, looking at our squad and thinking geez, we are nowhere.

Things can turn pretty quick.

Ugh.
Do you remember the rebuild from 2008-2010? People said we would miss finals for 5 years once we won the spoon in 2010. We played in a prelim the next year and a GF 5 years later. Its not like everyone we traded were winners either - we thought the following were going to lead our midfield: Masten, Ebert, Selwood.

It can turn quickly. Not saying we necessarily win a flag, but we can jump into top 8 a lot quicker than people realise. We have enough of an experienced core to be around for another 4 or 5 years (let's say that's at least half our best 22). All we have to do is develop the other half (some of which are already on the list) and trade in a few missing pieces. We could be there in 2024 or 2025.

It looks like we did well in the last draft. Nail 3 best 22 players in this one and we're well on the way.

Well from 2010 took us 5 years to make a GF.

So... this is my best guess of current players for our next GF side. 5 premiership players there. Three in the backline, so safe to say that's our strongest line.

Priorities IMO:

1. Midfield. Development of Hough, Culley and Chesser. Not sure if L.Edwards is GF quality, hopefully! Then, bringing in elite midfield talent through the draft or trade.
2. KPF to pair with Allen. Too early to tell if this can be J. Williams.

FB H. Edwards Barrass Cole
HB Duggan Bazzo Witherden
C Hough Chesser L.Edwards
HF Allen Ryan
FF Waterman Jones
R B.Williams Sheed Culley

Witherden may not be at the club in another 5 weeks, let alone 5 years.

By then you’d hope we’d have upgraded Williams, Waterman, Jones, L Edwards, potentially Cole.

H Edwards could be there, depending on development.

I think the developing side of our list is really poor, but add the next two drafts worth onto last years and Culley, starts to look much better. Really need to nail these picks.

(Log in to remove this ad.)

Premierships are not easily won.

A lot has to go right at the same time. We found ourselves with a really good core in 2018 and even then it went down to the wire.

We are really at the start of the rebuild that we have been dreading for quite some time. There’s no guarantees that anyone on our list right now will be in our next premiership side. Rebuilds sometimes take longer than expected and even more regularly have to be realigned part way through. Discarding our AFL quality footballers just because they’ve hit 28/29 and might not be around when we hit the pinnacle again doesn’t solve things. We still need leaders to guide and set standards for our younger crew.

What we can hope, is that the changes we make each year take us closer to that goal. History of our club has suggested that we don’t stay down for too long. I hate the fact we are where we are. But I think we will be back again soon enough.

We are going to need 4-5 (minimum) elite players to get us to a GF or premiership.

From the above list - here are the potentially elite players we currently have:

Barrass
Hough
Chesser
Allen
Ryan
B Williams
Culley

Of that list Barrass is currently elite already - so there is 1 (assuming he holds his form)

Ryan - we know he can do it when fit, needs to recapture his best form

Allen - it's a shame we haven't seen him for 12 months, but his trajectory was showing that he might well make it to elite (if not - very good)

The others are all in there because they are young (I was going to exclude B Williams - but if the others are there due to age he deserves it too). On what they have shown I don't think any get to elite status (definite B22 role players there though) - but any fast-track of the rebuild is relying on 1-2 of these guys plus our 2022 draft class developing above expectations.

As you say, the midfield is a major issue - but also the area where we do have some developing players (and will almost certainly add 2 more to that group in the coming draft).

KPF - gut feel was we thought we would get Cadman at 2, when that became impossible (knowing GWS were trading up to 1 to grab him) we've moved back. We are either looking at taking one in 2023 (obviously a lot to play out there regarding what pick we have, and who is available) or potentially trading for one in 1-2 years. I think we will take one this draft also, but like J Williams from last year they will have at least some deficiencies (hence taken later in the draft) so are a smaller chance of making the grade.

I feel we could’ve avoided this mess if we had’ve just listened to kaiser and traded everyone apart from Allen back in ‘21

rom the above list - here are the potentially elite players we currently have:

Barrass
Hough
Chesser
Allen
Ryan
B Williams
Culley

Sorry folks it aint going to turn around quickly. i wouldnt be surprised if we got the wooden spoon next year. North melbourne are at least 2 years ahead of us in developing there young players. I really hope we can turn it around quickly as it was very poor watching in 2022. Lets hope we dont fall into holding our older players to long ever again the last 3 years has been wasted.

TBH i'm tipping 16h followed by last in 2024.

TBH i'm tipping 16h followed by last in 2024.
I see next year being almost the equivalent of 2009 where we win 5-10 games and finish in no man's land before we really bottom out for a couple of years.

We will benefit from better player availability next year but then most of the over-30s will retire.

We will probably lose Hurn, Gaff, Darling, Shuey, McGovern, Cripps, and Yeo in the next 24 months. That is a third of our best 22.

We may hit this draft out of the park and have 2-3 players immediately slot into the starting team (like in 2010 with Gaff and Darling) but that is wishful thinking on my part.

It's an interesting concept, but it doesn't really play out like that.
In Emma Quayle's book about the draft, Hawthorn kept guys like Richie Vandenberg even though they didn't think he'd be a part of the next flag, you still need transition players, otherwise you have a team of youth with no guidance or on field coaching getting banged up by bigger bodies.
