Your ranking are interesting too. I know im a Bulls fan but id have Chicago 1st. Simply because they won the most Championships in the 25 year period. I get that LA were a little most consistent, made more finals and playoff appearances and didnt have as many sub 30 win seasons.

But in the end, it's about winning chips. LA made more playoffs, didnt suck as much sometimes as the Bulls and made the NBA Finals more often. But in the end, the Bulls still won more Championship and that's what it's all about. Winning chips.

But this thread is pretty much the greatest thread on BF ever.

Would love someone to do this for the English Premier League.
Volunteering there jod? :)

I feel where you're coming from.

The thing is, if I'd just tabled a list of 'most championships', it wouldn't have been very enlightening! 23 of the 25 championships were shared by just six teams...

I have an interest in this too - it'd be a helluva project though...
Fair point and you would be the right man for the job for the EPL version. Would. Be. Insane.

Maybe you could do it from 1980 onwards though so at least us Liverpool fans have something nice to read.

I'd probably go back even further.

In some ways English league football rankings are easier to quantify than the NBA, so you could do something like 'ranking the top 50 teams of the last 50 years', spanning the different divisions. Of course you'd have to add in cup competition success and European qualification, but it's definitely feasible.

This thread hardly needs another person talking it up, but I just want to express my very sincere thanks to the OP- a great read, and bought back some wonderful memories.

One thing I thought was interesting reading this thread, is how much it confirms a prejudice that the early to mid-90s were an absolutely extraordinary era of basketball talent. From 89-95, there were some unbelievable teams which never won rings. The Stockton/Malone era Jazz, Drexler's Blazers, Ewing's Knicks and 1993 Phoenix Team were all ring calibre teams which just ended up on the wrong side of Michael Jordan. I remember my older brothers telling me the entire 1993 season that Phoenix were going to roll over Chicago they had such a deep lineup and people forget that Barkley was clearly the best player in the regular season. I remember the repeated playoff series against the Knicks as them being better than Chicago in every regard except where MJ was concerned.

Also, kudos for highlighting one of the great what-ifs of that era- Tim Hardaway, who pre-knee looked set to be an MVP calibre player, at a time when Golden State were loading up with serious talent- if he had stayed healthy and the team had stayed together, Hardaway, Sprewell, Mullin, Webber and <insert Centre name here> would have been a dynasty in the making.

Those were great times to be an NBA fan, there were some of the best playoff series ever. Chicago v Detroit in 1990, Boston v Indiana in '91 (* you Chuck Person, * you) Chicago and New York in '93, Chicago and Phoenix in '93....

If you could promise me a big pile of money and 12 virgin lasses then something could be arranged.

That was the driving force behind this project - expecting delivery any day now...

Reads like a almanac Son of Skeletor. Loved every write up and the outstanding attention to detail.

Cheers mate!

Glad you enjoyed the read! You brought up a couple of pertinent points that really contributed to driving this thread.

Really this was originally conceived as a statistically orientated comparison of the various NBA teams, with a quick recap for each team to sketch it out.

It ended up turning down a different road for the very reasons you articulated. As you said, there are great stories behind the Suns, Blazers, Knicks, Cavs etc of the early 90s that Jordan's Bulls overshadowed, likewise the Pacers, Sonics Jazz etc of the late 90s. It didn't seem fair to whack a 'zero' next to their name for 'championships won' without at least putting their most talented teams in historical context.

Similarly I didn't want to simply rag on the stragglers of the league without at least throwing up a couple of 'What ifs?' for context. Toronto might have done it hard, but at least they had the foresight to draft Camby, McGrady, Carter, Bosh etc. Nobody could argue with the talent the Dubs amassed in the 90s as you rightly pointed out, star-crossed though they were.

Even the Sixers, Bucks, Kings and Wolves had at least one serious shot at winning at all. It just didn't seem fair to say "they sucked" without making mention of that fact.

It's hard to do justice to all 30 teams, but I gave it a shot anyway - I'm just happy that people found it worthwhile reading.
