Interesting from Emma Quayle:

Most significant, though, was that the last two NSW players picked went to Port Adelaide, who used their first pick, 56, on Dougal Howard and later grabbed Logan Austin. Howard is from Wagga Wagga, and spent most of his season with the Murray Bushrangers.

But Austin is a Canberra kid, who didn't have the same sort of exposure. He no doubt benefited from the fact the NSW/ACT team played a handful of games in the TAC Cup again this year, against better opposition than those kids usually get to test themselves against and in front of more recruiters, more regularly. But he might not have handled himself so well without the work put into him from a younger age.

That GWS didn't have room for Howard, and had planned to save him for the rookie draft, says even more. These are still early days. In time, the academies should start producing enough players so that the sponsor club won't have room for them all. More teams will get to choose from a much deeper draft pool, and this is something to celebrate.

PORT Adelaide top pick Dougal Howard has compared being drafted to Port Adelaide to winning the lottery but could not have been more surprised when his name was read out by the Power.
But he said it could not have been happier when he learnt his destination was Alberton.
“Like everyone, I’ve been watching them over the last couple of years and yeah, they’re flying,’’ he said. “It’s going to be hard (to break in), but it’s a great place.’’

Don't take what I wrote literally - Im just having a go at GWS coming into the comp when we were at our lowest ebb....thus meaning we missed out on even better picks than we got.....but we have managed to get some quality through them, which in the circumstances was only fair.

If we're lucky, he'd be still growing.

Imagine a 202cm forward, 95kg, agile and a good ball drop.

I hope Howard comes to fruition
