NFL 2014 Pre-Season Discussion

I wouldve loved to have seen sanchez in a west coast team. Think the jets ruined him to be honest and now he's mentally shot. He really had everything you want in a QB.

EJ on the other hand just flat out sucks to me. Big body, big arm and thats it.

Except talent.

Finished reading Collision Low Crossers while flying interstate yesterday. According to Dawidoff, Sanchez said all the right things and did all the right things but then completely bolloxed it up during game day - throwing off the back foot and just not playing as a maturing QB should have played.

The revolving door at receiver probably didn't help Sanchez and his relationship with Holmes soured pretty quickly, but it's not like he was the first quarterback in history to have to deal with those issues.

Yahoo's Rand Getlin is "hearing" that Ray Rice's suspension will be for two games.

Getlin admits he hasn't been able to confirm this rumor and Rice hasn't been sentenced on the matter yet, so we're not setting it in stone. But if Rice does escape with a mere two-game ban, it's going to be a public relations nightmare for the NFL. He assaulted his fiancee (now wife), while Josh Gordon is facing a 16-game ban for marijuana violations. Bernard Pierce will be the feature back while Rice serves his suspension.

NFL suspended Ray Rice for the first two games of the 2014 season.

Rice was arraigned on felony aggravated assault charges following an ugly April domestic incident with his fiancee (now wife) at an Atlantic City hotel. He avoided trial by completing a pretrial-intervention program, and this is his first violation of the league's personal conduct policy. Still, it's a bad look for the NFL as Rice gets off lightly while Josh Gordon faces a 16-game ban for marijuana. Bernard Pierce will serve as a feature back and quality RB2 option against the Bengals in Week 1 and Steelers in Week 2. Rice will have to show improved form to wrestle back his starting job after looking done in 2013 (3.08 YPC).

What an absolute waste of talent is Justin Blackmon. I remember really wanting the Rams to draft him in that draft and being really annoyed when the Jags got him ahead of us! Thank god that one didn't work out.

And just a 2 games suspension for knocking out your wife cold? Well there you go. Nice to see where the NFL's priorities are.

I tend to agree with the article. Players have gotten a lot more for less.

"Edwards found the Rice incident particularly troubling because of the reaction from the Ravens. During a May news conference, both Ray and Janay addressed the media. She apologized for her role in the incident, while Rice apologized to his bosses. He never once said he was sorry to Janay. That kind of public showing sends a loud message, Edwards said."

"You beat your wife, but you've been well behaved before that so we will just give you a slap on the wrist"

I sort of understand why it can be hard to judge when there doesn't seem to be any strict rules about those sort of incidents compared to drugs but isn't making the league look worse than it already does to a lot of people deserve a bigger punishment?

The NFL's suspension system is always pretty laughable because it maps directly from "how outraged are the public/media" to "this is how many games they're getting suspended". :(

And this differs from the MRP how?

Exhibit A - Brian Lake.

Exhibit B - Jack Viney.

Those aren't the best examples

A better one would be that Fyfe is ineligible for the Brownlow and everyone subsequently has been found to have to case to answer for

Yeh, using Lake as an example is not a good one. Was a pretty poor act, got what he deserved. It is the inconsistency around the same acts in the AFL that drive people mad. Franklins shoulder to the jaw example...gets off. Guys doing similar or lesser things getting suspended. As much as I hate to say it Blacky, your team gets a good ride. Kane Cornes pushed a guy who ran passed him 2 weeks ago, he fell over, would have gotten a week without an early plea....for a push, that wasnt even given as a free kick...anyway..this is the NFL board, no room for s**t AFL talk! :p

Hawks fans in general got a case of the sads about how "the media" treated Brian Lake.

Everyone else thought the suspension he got was about right.

And there's the sound of it flying all over your heads.

It really isn't that hard to grasp.

Lake was crucified in the media over the weekend, as Clarkson reasonably pointed out earlier this week.

Everyone in the media felt sorry for poor widdle Jack Viney.

Blackmon plays up again

"
The Jacksonville Jaguars were hit with a piece of troubling news about one of their players who was already on indefinite suspension by the NFL.
Wide receiver Justin Blackmon, a repeat violator of the league's substance-abuse policy, was arrested Wednesday evening in the Oklahoma City suburb of Edmond on a complaint of marijuana possession. A police spokeswoman said Blackmon, a first-round draft pick by the Jaguars in 2012 out of Oklahoma State, admitted he had smoked ''a blunt'' while driving and had another in his vehicle.
Asked at a press conference Thursday morning in Jacksonville about Blackmon, Jaguars coach Gus Bradley said ''it's unfortunate news'' but added ''we haven't had much contact with him.'' When Blackmon was suspended last November, one of the conditions was that no one in the organization would be allowed to communicate with him by any way other than text message.
Bradley appeared caught off guard by the news and offered no hint as to what sort of future, if any, Blackmon would have with the Jaguars.
''We haven't discussed that at this point,'' he said. ''Really, our focus has been on the team that's here right now.''
Following a charity kickoff luncheon later in the day, Jaguars owner Shad Khan said the team has no plans to release Blackmon.
''We want to keep him as a player,'' Khan said. ''He's not part of the team now, obviously, but it's very important for him to get the help. It's the most important thing.''
Both Bradley and quarterback Chad Henne expressed concern about Blackmon that also went beyond football-related matters"

I think the lesson to learn out of all of this is, don't choke someone out on a footy field. The media didn't make him do it.

Two weeks for beating your wife and having the footage replayed everywhere, not a good look for the NFL. Haven't they been trying to encourage women to watch the game?

Yet a guy gets a year for marijuana??

Oh and if you want MRP injustice.....Goddard!!!
