I noticed in the Nick Riewoldt Champion thread we all branched off talking about some of our other wonderful champions.
Just want to get some responses to what players you guys and gals had on the back of your Saints Jumpers when you were young & even on the back of the old duffle coats
I started with number 9 on my first jumper in the 70's. That was the big kicking ( and even bigger drinking) Val Perovic. Very good player Val. But to be honest I only chose that number because I was nine yrs old at the time
By the time the late 70's came around , myself along with 10,000 other kids were in awe of the great Barks. So 9 came off and 1 went on. Then i remember Barks being out for a while injured in the early 80's so I went out and got a 0 and got mum to move the 1 over a little so I could have the number 10 for Michael Roberts.
Young kids today don't realize how easy they have it just getting a heat pressed number put on.
Our poor mothers had to painstakingly hand sew the numbers on the back. Im lucky my dear old mum never bled to death from a thousand pin pricks cos I changed my number so often
Then of course Barks came back so the 0 was taken off and the 1 put back proudly in the middle
Barks stayed there until I got a new jumper in the mid 80's . Much to my mums bleeding finger tips relief you could get iron on numbers by this stage. By now I had grown fond for Joffa Cunninghams dash & pointy elbows flying around so I went out and got a number 5.
But still no relief for mum because by this stage it was trendy to also have the players name on the back of the jumper. So no easy ironing on of a simple number 5 for her. I wanted G E O F F - C U N N I N G H A M ironed on. BUT!!!!! I wanted one letter red, the next white, then red again and so on. I thought I was doing her a favour replacing her bleeding fingers with burnt ones
That number 5 was the last number I wore proudly on my back as a kid.
Whenever I go to the games nowdays and look at a sea of number 12's and 7's on the young supporters in the crowd it always brings back fond memories of being a Saints loving kid.
