Toast Steve Johnson

I thought Johnson was BOG despite the errors he made, unlike last week, when his execution was deplorable despite his high possession count. Sure, there were a couple of bad-Stevie moments, but he got the ball so much, often in heavy traffic, and was generally very damaging with his disposal, and his work rate was phenomenal. His three goals were icing on the cake.

Both coaches obviously agreed about his impact, because he scored a perfect 10 in the AFLCA voting.

He never takes the percentage play. It's always the all or nothing option. Some may hate that about him, but the fact is he helps us a hell of a lot more than he hurts us, and he's said time and time again that he will always continue to take the risky options for as long as he plays.

High risk, high reward. Best on ground yesterday.

I see him as taking the option most likely leads to a scoring shot. He doesn't want to get rid of it just for the sake of it. He sees a player in a dangerous - for the opposition - position and he gets it to them anyway he can. There is always risk when you push it like he does.

To me its because he doesn't need to learn the game.
He knows it.
He knows what he's done well and when he's been poor.
He knew he had a shocker that quarter and Scotty knew that he knew yet still gave him a bake.
Sure he does dumb stuff but a smarter footballer there isn't. Also couple that with his ability to do the magical (and downright impossible) makes him one of those so called "uncoachables".
It's not saying he can't be coached or they just leave him to do whatever he wants, it's more that they can't really try to monitor him and motivate him, it's hard to explain but there are players out there, not the most gifted and they require constant feedback and attention from coaches. SJ doesn't.
Ablett Snr and Jnr were the same. I'd say Selwood and Motlop are now.
self-regulating or autonomous players, maybe, rather than 'uncoachable', which sounds like they're naughty little boys who don't listen to the coach ;)

Love Stevie. Couldn't give a tossbag about his transgressions. Over the journey, he has compensated us many times over for his wild ways. Pleasure to watch. Long may he play.

Couldn't agree more. I'm sure if you weighed up his positives and negatives over his career, the positives would be miles in front.

Definitely. It makes the stupid things he does even more enjoyable - like the time he threw himself forward playing for a free kick and ended up busting his nose on the grass.

I know people say ex players should go elsewhere to coach for a while but i really hope Johnson stays with us and never leaves.

Yes. I don't know how he relates to other players but from a purely football brain - getting the best out of yourself - he would be the one I would want on the coaching staff as soon as he retires.

I'd actually like him to be a playing coach in the VFL for 2 years.
Maybe 10 games a year teaching them about positioning, forward entries etc.

Then move into an AFL role.

Did you know that Steve Johnson has 20 & 3'd (20 or more disposals and 3 or more goals in a single game) a total of 31 times throughout his illustrious thirteen year career?

This happens to be the same number as what Gary Ablett senior accumulated. Johnson needs just one more 20 & 3 performance to surpass the great man :thumbsu:

SJ this year is currently averaging 27.46 and 1.06

What was Lethal's?

he's already 20 & 3'd twice this year alone so the chances are very high he'll likely do so before the year is out.
If he happens to get moved back to the forward line though, that could be an issue.
Well if Johnson is moved to the forward line, then he can surely snag a few goals each game to bring his SEASON avg to 20 and 3.

Seriously he had 118 games of 3 goals and 20 possessions? That's ******* bananananas!

He is actually a finals specialist IMO. He was brilliant in the 2011 grand final and in the first quarter of our qualifying final last year he racked up about 9 touches and kicked two stunning goals before receiving a hard tag from Crowley. Those are just two of Steve's many magnificent finals performances.

Must have been a freak player, once voted player of the century. Somehow his name sometimes seems to be overlooked when discussing the greats though.

who do you think has been the better overall player, Johnson or Bartel?
Oh it's so hard to split them. Two different players, really. Bartel the reliable and stevie J the mercurial! I think, however, many people don't realise how many goals stevie has booted over his career - 421 - and 421 bloody good ones!! His move into the midfield has worked very well and he has become one of our most important players. His best match has to be against the dees in 2011, where he gathered 34 possessions and kicked a bag of 7. He racked up a ridiculous number of score involvements as well. I think stevie j beats bartel (just)

Only saw the tail end of his career. He was still good then, but I didn't see his best.

Unfortunately, the way the discussion is held has changed. Footy fans now are so neurotic and insecure that you can't have a friendly banter about who "might" be the game's best player. Personally I don't think there is an undisputed number one. It's not like cricket. It descends quickly, North fans pick Carey, Hawthorn fans pick Matthews, Geelong fans Ablett. Then older supporters will nominate Ted Whitten or Bobby Skilton and they'll be arrogantly dismissed with "didn't play in enough finals or premierships".
