Put aside for a moment our proud history, 16 premierships, the carlton arrogance and the 'strut' being back (clearly way to early for robert walls to have made that call).I am just starting to get the feeling that this club has developed a losing culture. Plain and simple when a club has won only 20-25% of its games over the last 5 or 6 years including wooden spoons it has seriously affect the mental state of our players

All this speculation of tanking does not help either...perhaps the players simply do not now how to win and cannot get rid of this attitude that close enough is good enough.

How many of our players have seriously experienced playing in a successful side with the blues? I exclude nick stevens career at port, juddy's at the eagles, and hadley's at the lions because this is success at another club and not their current one. The only player i can think of is Ryan Houlihan, and that would have been very early on in his career when playing for us around 2001. So the rest of our side genuinely do not know what it is like to play in a strong-performing carlton side and possibly even feel like it is a long long way off ever experiencing this.

We can have all the no. 1 draft picks in the world and trade for the best players in the comp however this doesnt change the constant and perhaps encouraged losing and again this close enough is good enough, 3 good quarters of footy (like yesterday) crap.

I believe that StKilda is proof in the pudding. For years they were getting smashed and picking up no. 1 draft picks left, right and centre. While they are a decent side they have certainly not fulfilled their potential which they should have by now with some even belieiving they had missed their premiership window of 2004-2006. This is probably put down to a losing culture that that has been cultivated at the club...I just hope the same isn't happenin with our beloved Blues and I can't wait to be proven wrong...

Yes we HAD.. but that is being erradicated as we speak.

Judd and Hadley are two that will greatly help, and no doubt Ratten will put his 2 cents worth in as well.

We are inexperienced but that's life... I still remember in our glory days season where we lost our first couple then stormed home to make finals (94 IIRC think we lost our first 3).

95 we lost 2 in a row to the 2 bottom sides... it happens... Richmond beat Collingwood late last year.. there are so many instances things like this happen... we lost Round 1.. lets not let it dampen the other 21+ games we may play this year. There will be joyful moments for us soon enough.

It reminds me of Rnd1 07. Virtually a reversal of fortunes. Last year we got a good lead, only to get run over the top by a fitter, hungrier Carlton outfit.

Exact opposite this year.

Based on that logic it could turn into a reversal of ladder positions too, whereby we finish 15th and you guys 16th.

Unfortunately, when you lose any many games on the trot as you guys, the players confidence is bound to take a pounding.

we have a good chance round 3. such big games are always close affairs, and we will have bentick, hampson, kruezer, and hopefully fisher back. don't forget another game under judd and stevens will help as well.

im hating this negativeity!! we are on the up! 21 more games be positive:thumbsu:

"We're on the up" has been said time and time again for the past few years. I'll believe it when we show it on the field... and I do think we'll imrpove as the season goes. Though I would like to win any of the next two, to avoid our longest losing streak.

so were on the down? our problem is everyone talked carlton up all pre-season including the media coz of judd, we still are an average side, just a better one then last year. i have faith we'lll beat essedon, and if we can get in between 5 goals of saints were doing alright.. just sh** me when ppl sitting there canning players and pointing fingers after one game. we weren't going into round 1 in the position we would ahve liked. players underdone, injuries coming up against a side that would do anything to gt that one win.

No, we're stagnant.

Don't know about you, but I thought we were good enough to beat the Tigers going into the game. Let's just say it will be hard to get over this one until our next win.

that is true, it was hard one to get over, but if richmond were playing another team is till think they would have done alright, flooded, played scrappy footy, won the contested ball(showed they wanted it) richmond do have the players there to turn it on i.e richo, brown, pettifer and foley. im not that dissapointed. it look to be richmonds only highlight of the year. and that beating an undermanned, underdone carlton side.

Of couse it is Richmond only highlight of the year. Only one game has been played so far.
You're not really adding anything to these discussions. Carlton supporters are discussing/venting/analysing. No need to turn threads on the Carlton board into a Tiger defence for every single comment. Let it play out for a day or two and it will all stop. If you jump in and comment on every tiny thing, it just adds to the frustration.

Thanks

Don't worry you guys will get better has the season goes on.

I have a feeling Blues will make the 8.
It's crazy, but anythings possible this early in the season. I wouldn't put money on it, but I sure as hell wouldn't be against seeing it:thumbsu:.

you see this is where your problems lie, just cant accept that carlton are just not good enough, carlton have a very weak team no defence, very average fowardline led by a halfwit thats only interested in himself average midfield thats young judd is a champ but 1 player doesnt make a team. your expectations of a very young inexperianced team with few leaders are very high. sure carlton will improve but they are a very very very long way from being a top 8 team. i give you guys no chance of beating st kilda next week could be a 10 goal defeat. the carlton supporters love their club but tend to overate even the average players
the back 6 are very weak & will get very high scores kicked against them in the future, hopefully you dont inccur major injurys to fev, judd, stevens, wait if 2 of these players go down will be an extremely long year for carlton. p.s i actually dont rate richmond as a top 8 prospect either bottom 4 for both clubs imo

Hasn't stopped your mob from talking themselves up:rolleyes:.

No, we haven't developed a losing culture. That is what St Kilda had in the '70s & '80s, when many of their supporters would even have a laugh at how mediocre their club was. We don't see that happening at Carlton. What I think has developed is an expectation among many of the players that we are going to be overrun by the opposition.

In the last couple of seasons we have seen us move into winning positions on many occasions, only to stop & be overtaken by the opposition. Instead of being able to put the foot on the 'gas' & bury the opposition, our players seem to go into their shells, waiting for the inevitable comeback from the opposition. This will only change when the majority of our players gain self belief & start believing that they belong in the AFL. This could happen almost overnight & lead to a total turnaround of our form. When this will happen is anyone's guess, though.

Do we need a sports psychologist working with our players, or is it a matter of the few senior players who have experience of regularly winning games motivating the younger players? Maybe the coaching staff need to focus a little bit more on this side of things (I assume they aren't at the moment). I wonder how many of our kids have received the message that, yes, they do belong on the AFL stage. So far we keep hearing that they are young & inexperienced & we should expect this type of performance.
