Strongest swans team you can put together?

Thought it might be fun to put together the strongest lineup out of all the swans players that I have seen. I'm 28 so despite seeing the likes of Williams, Round, Healy, Carroll, Capper etc I decided to limit it to players whom I could clearly remember throughout their entire careers (and players that made a significant contribution while at the swans).

Thats a great team as it has a great combination of speed, toughness, power forwards, run through halfback and and a great backline.

Cheers! The forward line may be a little top heavy but Mick is capable of filling the crumbing role. The backline is also lacking a bit of height but we've never really had any really good defensive talls since I've been following the Swans. The midfield and the flanks up the ground are pretty good.

dude, as much as we all love Kirky who is a great bloke and all - I think we all know P.Kelly would be el capy-tarno!!! Even Kirky would agree with that.

TBH... I thought about it for a while and weighed it up like this:

Kelly is by far the better player, was absolutely inspirational on the field and led by example.

Kirk on the other hand.... while nowhere near the player Kelly was, still sets a fantastic example on the field and is obviously a much better communicator than Kel.

I just think that if I was going to pick an actual team to take the field that I would want Kirk addressing the team in the huddle and giving orders on the ground while Kelly would still be there to inspire the team with his ferocity and tackling.

That was another tough one for me but I think Staffords decline in his last year or two at the swans is what clinched the deal to include Jolly as the 2nd ruck. Jolly is still also relatively young for a ruckman (in that they take longer to develop) and I believe has shown further improvement this year.

Thats a great side. I know my old man is a huge fan of Tilt and also Toohey. I remember a little of both those guys and probably more of Carroll but just not enough to make a fair comparison with the players from the last 15 or so years.

Also great to see Chapman get a mention.... I was a huge fan of the way he played his footy. I can't remember a more recklessly courageous player. How many times did he get knocked out throwing himself into a contest like he had stolen and was playing with someone elses body? At least he'll get a good run on the highlight reel over the years, being the player that kicked the ball to plugger in the 96 PF.

Thinking this through a bit more, I would interchange Schwass with Gerard Healy. Nothing against Schwatta, but Healy was an out and out Champion.

Lewis may not have lived up to his full potential but he was still a bloody good player on his day. If you look back through our lists over the past 15 years or so it's very difficult to find someone worthy of replacing him.

As I stated before, the decision between Kirk and Kel was a tough one but I chose Kirk based on the fact that this is a side I would actually send out to play. If I was basing the captaincy purely on who deserved it more then Kel would win hands down.

As I said... I really wasn't old enough during most of their careers to judge them fairly against todays players. I remember what a great player diesel was at carlton but struggle to recall much of him at the swans.

In a swans guernsey "Diesel Williams" was pound for pound one of the most complete players I have ever seen play for "The Bloods". His ability to gain the ball and use it (30 - 40 times a game) with precision by hand and foot were poetry in motion.

For mine Diesel, Plugga, Kelly, Healy, Mickey "O" and a bloke called Kirk all hit the line in a 6 - way dead heat. We have indeed been very fortunate to have the calibre of players we have had play for the swans over the years.

This is a good thread to promote healthy discussion because every supporter sees different qualities in players. I always believe that within the confines of a team structure or an era many good players are left out or slip through the cracks.

Until more recently those players nominated for the "Team of the Century" gave a pretty fair indication of the player talents that have been on display as South Melbourne / Sydney Swans. - Go The BLOODS !!!

MF, Overall, you haven't done a bad job (with 12 Premiership players in your squad) but here's a team playing at their best would be a pretty competitive side, (In my opinion) after having watched them as South Melbourne & Sydney Swans (AKA The Mighty Bloods) since circa 1970;

My old man always goes on about what a great player he was. I noticed Teasdale didn't get a run in either of your sides (another of my old mans favourites along with Stewart Gull).

One thing you notice looking at the two teams is the amazing number of brownlow medalists.

MF, up until more recently and culminating in G/Final apperances and 1996 and the premiership in 2005 we (as Swans supporters) didn't usually have a lot more to hang out hats on than producing brownlow medallists.
