Watched Galaxy Quest the other day and, as always, enjoyed it a heck of a lot. At the time, I remember seeing the trailers for it prior to it coming out and thinking that it was going to be unwatchable - not only was it a sci fi spoof, but it starred Tim Allen.

There's no way that movie was supposed to be good, but an actual plot of substance and a great ensemble performance pulled it off (I hadn't even heard of Sam Rockwell before this movie).

What other movies have pleasantly surprised? Super Troopers is the other main one that springs to mind for me. God almighty I thought that was going to stink. Maybe that's more of a guilty pleasure-type movie though.

snakes on a plane comes to mind

Agree with that - Snakes on a Plane was a great movie.

I don't get the hate for "The Invention of Lying" which was released last year. It was such a funny and clever film, it should be on the Academy Award nominations for 2010. While on the subject on the films nominated for best picture this year, am I alone in saying that when my time comes, I will leave this world having never watched any of them?

Holes
Bridge to Terabithia
The Spiderwick Chronicles

Three movies which I had initially dismissed because of their target audience and all of the awful fantasy book series to movie adaptations in recent years raised further doubts over the last two. All three are very decent though.

If you leave this world without having seen The Hurt Locker, than thats your loss, amazing film

Super Troopers? We all have our own tastes, but for me that film was unwatchable. I watched about 30 minutes before turning it off, which is very rare for me. Never seen Galaxy Quest, perhaps I should give it a go.

Dogma could have easily sucked. A religious film made written by Kevin Smith, with Jay and Silent Bob, who somehow got their own film. Smith's other films blow, but Dogma somehow became a masterpiece.

I think Super Troopers is probably more of guilty pleasure of mine rather than a movie that didn't suck. Dogma is a great pick, that's exactly the type of film I'm talking about - all the wrong ingredients but actually it somehow worked.

Smith's movies haven't all sucked though. I quite like Clerks, and although I hated Chasing Amy plenty of people rate that.

Super Troopers could have been great. You've got crazy cop films like Naked Gun and Police Academy that are riotously funny. For me it was poorly written, but each to their own. Dogma works because it had an awesome script and Damon and Affleck make a great team. I don't know why Smith can't make his other films work.

I remember the misses nagging me to go see Titanic with her for weeks and i finally did thinking this is just going to be another soppy love story etc etc. Well i was blown away and in complete awe of the movie for the whole 3 hours.

Walked out of the cinema thinking **** that was a great film!!!

I can think of plenty of movies that shouldn't have sucked but it but can't really think of many that should have sucked but didn't. A couple of ones that come to mind are a couple of horror movies. Reeker was great, especially the ending. I also enjoyed The Hills Have Eyes 2. Cutting the guy's hand off then waving it at him was hilarious.

Pirates of the Carribean. A movie based on a theme park ride starring Orlando Bloom does not look good on paper, but somehow they pulled it off (Johnny Depp must get a lot of the credit for this).

And a movie that shouldn't have sucked but did; Spider Man 3.
The arrival of Venom should have been a momentous occasssion and fully deserving of his own movie, in the same way Doc Oc had in the sequel. Instead we got a cavalcade of poorly thought-out villains, a million plot holes and dancing emo Peter Parker

How can you say it should have been on the list if you havn't seen any of the others to compare it too. Pretty stupid IMO

Sigourney Weaver is actually really good in comedy roles. She was also brilliant in Heartbreakers (2001) with Jennifer Love Hewitt. The scene with her and the Russian waiter was brilliant. No matter how many times I watch it, it cracks me up every time.

The butterfly effect had terrible reviews....... like 20 or 30 on metacritic iirc

but it was an alright watch...... not a masterpiece but an entertaining watch nevertheless.

maybe I'm just a sucker for the time travel premise

The trailer for Everybody's fine marketed it as a whacky comedy where a father, Robert De Niro travels around the country to meet his children who is avoiding him.

after getting r*ped by Meet the Fockers I avoided it like the plague....

but the trailer totally misrepresented the film.... it was actually nothing of the sort....

it was a depressing introspective drama.....a pretty touching movie in the end.

in fact.... I would have liked to have seen the faces of the poor couples who went to see the flick thinking it was a date movie...... bwahahahaha!!!

if you've seen it you'll know what I mean =)

The DVD made it a very good movie. The ending is much better than the one seen in cinema's.

Gotta agree. Is just a film you can enjoy over and over. All credit goes to Depp.

Wish they didn't make the next 2 but.
