Nathan van Captain

I don't have to pretend, I saw it happen in the first 3 quarters.

Ahh yeah.

So in your opinion....he was terrible... until he put in the match winning performance.

You do realize one of those statements is drastically more important than the other?

Don't bother, he clearly didn't watch those quarters.

Not watching them is about the only way I could have an understanding on par with yours.

Still waiting for those examples. Or are you all bluster and made up crap as usual?

Ahh, strawmen and red herrings.

A quality contribution good sir.

No and no.

Are you Cornelia Rau?

You support Nathan VanBerlo, not the Adelaide Crows..

That's your problem.. If he had been so great for a period of time, everyone would be saying so..

Great game Douglas today right the way through and when it was needed earlier to keep us in the game, make him captain maybe i say..

Ah but you only see the name up in lights at the end of it all hey :o

Agree with this wholeheartedly.

And we can dismiss the theory that the club didn't want to show favour to one potential captain over another by getting Doughty/Stevo to fill in. They genuinely gave those guys the captaincy.

Ridiculous.

Good on VB for coming back so hard in the last quarter. His fitness has always been an asset, today he was still running strong while others were tiring.

Whoever our captain is next season, it has to be one of the younger players. It cannot be a Stevens a Doughty a Rutten or even a Thompson I'm now thinking. It has to be someone from the new wave and the young players have to be the ones in the leadership group so that the responsibility can drag these types of performances out of them.

Very interesting point Carl.

Was wondering how this might fit in with Burtons discussion on anerobic v aerobic fitness, and interchanges.

Did the fact that it was very hot, both teams fatigued, and we couldnt interchange like mad bring his ridiculous fitness base back into play?

I'm more confident in VB leadership abilities after today's performance.
Yep :thumbsu:

Assuming that VB does become captain this will become a memorable moment in AFC folklore. His first game as skipper he steps up to the plate and delivers a long bomb goal from outside fifty on the boundary line to snare a win.

I've been more on the Thompson/Dangerfield train in the past but full credit to VB for today. The youngest person ever to captain the club? I reckon he is. Two players down on a warm day and by all accounts Hendo and Bock were both struggling with injury/illness too, away from home, scores close and at 3/4 time VB hadn't exactly had a big game. Then the last quarter... ****ing magnificent :thumbsu:

Announces himself to the football world. Let's quit the bickering and all hop on board the VB train. We should get a bunch of "VB 4 Cpt" signs made up for the last game and get a chant going in three quarter time. A groundswell of public support to stop the club doing something absolutely ****ing ******ed like they always do like appointing Symes or Stevens or Doughty or talking Goodwin into going around one more time.

I expect footballers like Walker to turn a match in a single quarter after doing nothing for 3 of them. Not VB, this is hardly an expectation of him and is the exception to the rule. What we would like is good even contribution across the whole game.

It was a great quarter, but not worth blowing your load over.

Yeah and being soft, avoiding contests and kicking absolute howlers for 3 quarters isn't?

That goal was great, and his last quarter was good, but the 3 preceding quarters cannot be ignored.

So you don't want him for captain - fair enough.

But inventing all the rest of the bullshit above does you no credit.

Soft?? Bullshit!! :thumbsd:

Avoiding contests?? Bullshit!! :thumbsd:

Absolute howlers?? I can think of one. Every one of our players had them.

He may have been quiet for 3 quarters (followed by an outstanding last quarter effort and goal when it was needed) but your post is an invention of your prejudice. :thumbsd::thumbsd:

No doubt. The skills in general were poor in the last quarter. They kicked 1.6 and we kicked 2.5, everyone was basically rooted except VB. And Luke Power, who is and always has been a star.

Taking it further, his fitness could become more of a factor if the interchanges are capped next season.

Similar to Tippett's last year except a bit further out and on the wrong side for a righty. And the fact that we finished off with a win :thumbsu:

I'm not sold on him being captain. Give him the role the next two games, no switching it between the leadership group otherwise Symes might be next :thumbsd:. See what hes got.

Its just mind boggling Macca.

The thought that someone could actually call Nathan 'i handball with a broken collarbone' van Berlo soft and expect to be taken seriously says alot about the quality of poster this site attracts lately.

That turnover at CHF was one of the worst things I've ever seen.

Off the field he is a fantastic leader, and when in form he is a solid player, but he is not a captain. A captain needs to be able to lift and inspire a side and be a superior presence on the ground. Nathan isn't this.
Ummmm.... When the game was there to be won in the last quarter, he was exactly that. What more do you want from a captain?

What a load of crap. So because i actually stuck with a player, rather than just joining the bigfooty 'everyone else thinks hes bad, so i better agree' bandwagon, im not a supporter of my football club?

****ing ridiculously bad call bloke. You should be embarassed just to put that sort of shit up publically.

It's because you're so blind about it..

I have my players i like but i don't say they walk on water when they don't.. I don't say they're doing great when they're not..

You should be the one embarrassed by your bias.. Then he does that at the end and you think that's it, he's shown everyone forever now..

What about Douglas keeping us in it all day, Captain?

Also anyone that thinks he has not been playing well knows nothing, is wrong etc in your eyes.. Your opinion is all that counts right

Southerntakeover never did see your list of top 16 Crows players who might lead us to our next flag. Would be very interesting to see where you rank VB.

van Berlo will captain our next premiership side.

Rank that. :thumbsu:

One good quarter in 5 years doesn't maketh a player.

Not quite 1 in 5 years, but he hasn't played many for a while..

How about we recruit John Anthony from the pies? He can't get a game this year after kicking THAT goal in the semi final vs Adelaide last year at the MCG...

Captain material right there

Argument ended right there..
