But ranking VB in the importance of our side should be considering you want him as Captain. Is he in our top 5 players? Top 10? Top 15?

So you believe getting one free kick infront of goals is the same as dominating the last quarter of a game, in sweltering heat, and kicking a ripper of a goal to win the game?

Never minding the fact that noone has said this game alone is van Berlos platform for captaincy. Hes been a candidate for a long time already, based upon his body of work.

If you actually think inventing arguments to shoot down, and then actually failing to shoot them down with terrible not equivalent examples is you ending anything...

Again, pointless exercise, designed more at you attempting to get out of the real discussions by nitpicking where i position individual players than anything substantial.
 
That was one seriously good last quarter, but if we are to be fair and objective he was close to worst on ground in the first 3.

The Jack Attack stood up when it was counted too.. That's the key.. I didn't say vB didn't play a good last quarter (not amazing as you're making it sound), but i'm not judging captaincy on that alone when we have had 19 rounds and opportunities to make the finals and what has happened? Today was a dead rubber..
 
I'm still up in the air on who should be captain... but VB showed some good qualities in that last quarter and that definitely counts for something. Not just the goal but a lot of other efforts.

He had a massive clanger... DOugie was our best. But I hardly think a gut busting midfielder / defender / goal kicker is a bad candidate.

And like others have said... we hardly have stand outs for the role. He would be my pick as much for his off field stuff, his professionalism and the fact he's generally pretty reliable.

How many of our posters actually go to the games at AAMI? He definitely stands out as one who busts a gut for the chase, to present an option and when he plays well we generally win I have found.

Happy for others to step up... but just not sure they exist for the captain role. Leadership is more than just being a good player.

What dribble and a cop out. Where VB fits in this team has to have a bearing on whether he should be Captain. If he was in our top players you would say so. But you know he isnt and hence you wont answer the question.

In regards to the bold, this is my problem :o i can't pick anyone to strongly deserve or command the role..

Well, contrary to popular belief I do have the ability to admit when I'm wrong. When we were all discussing captaincy at the beginning of this year the No. 1 query I had over VB was his longevity, with the back injury that seemed to keep on lingering. He has certainly dispelled that worry.

Other than that there isn't an absolute head-and-shoulders candidate and frankly I would be reasonably happy wth any out of VB, Rutten, Thompson or Dangerfield. I leaned towards Thompson and then Dangerfield because of their on-field physicality and seeming willingness to impose themselves on a game but the more the season has gone on I have to acknowledge that VB is the one who looks as though he genuinely wants the job. And possession is 9/10ths the law, right? :p

A couple of appearances in the best players over the last two weeks should seal the deal.

Or maybe i dont believe theres a set and static ranking of players within a football team in terms of importance, from 1 to 22. The belief that there is seems absolutely ridiculous to me. Its the type of exercise that idiots on this site cling to, but which provides nothing of actual meaning.

Im comfortable in the belief that van Berlo is within our top 10 players performance wise. His history of best and fairest results placing him as such are enough for me.

I'll say it... he's definitely in our best side. I'd say he's in our top 10 without question.
 
Good last quarter and good goal to win the game, which Brizzy lost due to catching the Crow goal kicking disease. One quarter doesn't get you the Cap.

IMO VB's next two games against two powerhouses of the comp and how he stands up in them will be the deciding factor. If he wants to be captain he has to stand up for 4 quarters when the pies are smashing the shite out of us. Can't go missing like he has in other losses this year.

Same goes for Thommo, Truck and Danger.

The whole Captain debate is hard as there just isn't one you could say yep give it to them. Collingwood with Maxwell is an example of not giving it to the best player at the club-Swan, Didak or Pendubury. Maybe it can work with whoever gets the job next year.

Nah mate, its fairly clear from the deep and overwhelming quality of evidence that Allbetsroff has proven his case, and van Berlo is now to be considered weak, soft and a squib. :p

I mean come on. debate the actual subject if you want, but please start.

quite frankly what this club has been missing in recent years is players than stand up when it counts, and now some of you clowns want to point away to other parts of the game.

I don't think a big last quarter means he's captain, but gosh its a bloody nice thing to add to his campaign for it.

And in all seriousness, thats what people seem to be missing.

That one quarter isnt the entire reason he'll be our next captain, but it damn sure didnt hurt. Given the fact that he was already considered favourite for the job for a range of reasons, watching him exert his influence on the outcome of a match was at the least another tick in the boxes.
 
Great last quarter and good to see him stand up. He was a bit unsighted in the first 3 for me but I was already commenting before his goal what a fantastic last he was having.

As some have alluded to I am very interested to hear thoughts on what role his fitness/tank played in his ability to exert himself on the contest in the last. I think its a very fair point and possibly why he hasn't been able to show as great a form as in previous years - more burst players looking better than endurance players. Will be interesting to see how he goes when/if/how they cap interchange ability next year. If the game kept going the way of ice hockey he may have lost his 'edge'.

I missed the coin toss so didn't know he was named Captain for today. Very very telling IMO that he stood up after that.
