At the end of the day, both Kanye and Cudi are lucky that Lupe aint releasing Lasers this year. Going to be shown up against by the master.

anyone else think that "hell of a life" has the same rhyme structure as Black Sabbaths "Iron Man"
Thank you! That's been driving me insane for the past few days, you're completely right though.

I am loving this album more with every listen, there is so much depth in Kanye's production I love just how much he pushes himself every album. I don't care if he is mainstream he is the most exciting thing in music at the moment.

Apart from So Appalled & Monster which I've had time to live with I think I like All of the Lights & Dark Fantasy best. I also like what he does to the end of Runaway which is a track which is growing on me.

Omit I don't think it blows Big Boi's album out of the water but it might just shade it which I didn't think was possible.

Name them you big dog.

Some of you people are so fcked in the head, nothing worse than a triple j stoner trying to school people on hip hop. Funny bringing sales into it as so often you triple j faggets despise people that move units.

Stick to your underground irrelevant artists, the fact is this album is one of then best rap albums in the last 10 years.

I resent this comment. I listen to JJJ, I'm a stoner, and I think the Kanye album is brilliant. On the flip-side, I agree that there are TONS of better "rappers" out there.

What's great about Kanye is he writes better songs than most. It's as much about the music as it is about the lyrics. He doesn't worry about the boundaries of his genre and just makes the music he wants to make. He's going to be remembered as one of the most talented producers in the game, I have no doubt about this.

What sucks about Kanye is that he's a w***er. His ego dwarfs the Airbus A380 and he's done himself no favours with his repeated dummy-spits at award shows. He also name-drops way too many fashion brands - what I would like to know is exactly how much are Christian Dior paying him?

For all these reasons, I can completely understand why people can dismiss him as a musician. He's so easy to hate. Me? I think he's a genius with a heap of flaws, and I'll listen to everything he releases with an open mind because I'm well aware of how talented he is as an all-round song writer.

PS. Cudi's album is possibly better.

you are listening to the wrong *ingg album.
Nope. It's ok but nothing special.
Am I understanding correctly that you're not usually a hip-hop listener? If so, maybe name some of the artists you're into and I'll try to come up with a few recs. Hip-hop's pretty diverse, if you're new to it some artists are better to start off with than others depending on your musical background.
Not a big hip hop listener but have some stuff by Tribe Called Quest, Dj Shadow and MF Doom... will pretty much listen to anything though.

Kanye went and dropped the album of the year. This s**t is classic, 5 mic perfection

Been listening to this all of the last 2 days and there isn't a single song that is less than 4.5/5. Power is probably my least favourite track and its still dope. Like someone said above, the remix is superior

1. Dark Fantasy 5/5 - Better than 'Good Morning' off Graduation which is one of the best intros ever
2. Gorgeous 5/5 - Cudi's hook is infectious, as is the beat. Kanye kills it, Rae is ehhh but doesn't detract from the song
3. Power 4/5 - Dope
4. All of the Lights 5/5 - Gets better with every listen. Guests all work well, even Fergie's part is cool
5. Monster 5/5 - Hated it at first but is catchy as **** after a few listens. Nicki killed it
6. So Appalled 5/5 - Classic. All the verses are crack, Cyhi Da Prynce probably had the best
7. Devil In A New Dress 5/5 - Smooth as s**t. Kanye was dope and Ross killed his feature (as per usual)
8. Runaway 5/5 - Epic
9. Hell of A Life 5/5 - Wasn't feeling it at first but loving it now
10. Blame Game 4.5/5 - Slow songs like this aren't really my thing but this is a brilliant song. Chris Rock = LMAO
11. Lost in the World 5/5 - Played this like 5 times straight. Amazing music

Easily the best Rap release of the year and probably the best of the last 4 or 5 years. Graduation has been in my top 5 favourite albums for ages and this will probably surpass it
feel as if you are underrating the brilliance of this album.
worried that you might not properly understand the depth of kanye's true genius.

feel as if this is the greatest album ever recorded.
feel as if i can relate to kanye personally via human suffering/being outkast.
feel as if kanye truly understands the human condition.
worried that some people might not understand what kanye is trying to say.
feel as if the jews had this album back in ww2 they would have coped a lot better given kanye's understanding on human pain.
feel as if anyone who doesn't like this album must hold a grudge over the taylor swift thing rather than they just don't think it's that great.
feel like i wanna **** a phoenix with nice tittays.
feel as if kanye is like the modern day jesus only with better flow.
feel as if historical dating timelines will be changed from BC/AD to BK/PK (before kanye/post kanye). feel as though PK will be much better times for humanity.
feel as if kanye is the first ever human and the rest of us are all like proto-humans that dont understand what its like to be human like kanye and hate him for it.
feel as if i will evolve from a proto-human on my seventh play of this album.

on my fourth listen now, feel as if im becoming human...

I'm a little confused about why this matters to you so much though. Granted, he's better than G-Unit or Lil' Wayne or others of that ilk...but what's preventing you from going and selecting some music that isn't swimming along in the main stream? Why is "mainstream artist" i.e. "artist who has sold a lot of records" its own category?

Me I don't care if someone is mainsteam or not. I'm one of those people that genunely enjoy mainstream artists, underground artists, old school and modern-day artists. I don't discriminate in this regard, however a lot of those among us dismiss anyone instantaneously because of a commercial image (I suspect you are one of those people), and so I mentioned Kanye as a mainstream artist for this purpose. A lot of mainstream artists are garbage, but to dismiss them all because of this is idiotic. On a side note, Outkast may be signed to a major label, but their image is certainly 'indie'.

I like how your post assumes that I have been prevented from selecting music that isn't in the mainstream. This couldn't be further from the truth. There are people out there that can actually enjoy both, so long as the talent is there, and yes I believe Kanye is friggin talented. Talent doesn't just equal the extent of internal rhyming and multi-syllablic rhymes per bar, though I definitely enjoy this aspect of writing. For what it's worth, Below the Heavens is one of the best indie albums I've heard in the last few years.

I just can't stand indie elitism where an unpopular image automatically elicits an orgasm, just as much as I can't stand the ignorance of music that doesn't fit bullshit commercial stereotypes.

edit: just to add to the topic of recognising mainstream artists, I think artists making it big in the mainstream is important because I believe talented artists that are able to break through on a popular scale certainly deserve respect, particularly if they haven't had to adhere to stereotypes. This is why I believe hiphop is currently in somewhat of a re-emergence in the mainstream. In the mid-part of this decade, we had 50 cent dominating the charts making music that represented the exact stereotypes that made hiphop such a loathed genre in the first place, coupled with simplistic rhyming - no originality, no talented writing ability - in my opinion of course. In the last couple of years, we've got rappers with hit songs on the charts like Kanye, Lupe, Common, Cudi and BoB that haven't had to adhere to what the stereotype is and instead done something original. Doing something requiring skill and originality in order to make a popular hit deserves respect, and probably more so than someone doing something requiring skill and originality that doesn't get heard by anyone.

New G.O.O.D. Fridays track is up. Chain Heavy, featuring Talib and Consequence. Great track. In fact, all of the G.O.O.D. Fridays tracks have been really great. Love it.

you are listening to the wrong *ingg album.
So sick of indie faggets on bigfooty.

Name them you big dog.

SO. MUCH. FAIL.
Outkast is indie?
I honestly don't think dubs even knows who he's fighting against here. According to him, if you actually have an opinion on music that considers more than album sales, you're a jjj listening douche. Doesn't matter what you base your opinions on, or even whether or not you actually listen to jjj, you just are. Funny to see a meltdown over this, frankly...

------

Anyway, for those who have listened - are the tracks on the album that were Good Friday tracks the same as previously released, or are they new versions? I'm pretty pumped for this, don't know whether to dl or just wait for the release. Might wait, which would be the first time in a long time I've done that!

Kanye is too mainstream for you, don't bother.

Doesn't get much better than those 3. Some others:

- The Roots: Home Grown! The Beginner's Guide To Understanding The Roots, Volumes 1 & 2 (or if you can't find it, The Tipping Point)
- Jurassic 5: Quality Control
- Black Star: Mos Def & Talib Kweli are Black Star
- Lupe Fiasco: Food and Liquor

If those are too obvious, try:
- Anything you can find by Madlib (laid-back instrumentals)
- J-Live: All of the Above
- Company Flow: Funcrusher Plus

I would hardly consider any of them underground. Nor ATCQ or Shadow.

Many of the points in this debate are ill-conceived, and not very persuading.

But it is touching on some important issues.

Mainly the commercialisation of art, and the question of whether a rapper wants to make important music intended to provoke thought, or whether they want to make money? Is Kanye trying to be groundbreaking, as some have said in the past few pages, for the sake of art, and love of hiphop, or is he just trying to get attention to sell more albums. Because there can be no doubt the underground dude, who continuously puts out material, and maybe even knocks back record deals, is doing what he does for the love of hip hop.

I approach music by always listening to what sounds best to me. But just from what I consider noble (not pursuing money) I am probably drawn to rappers who don't seem obsessed with money.Thats not to say I don't enjoy commercial rap sometimes, but I probably have less respect for them.

But then that attitude has an obvious reply; which is better? - the rapper who has little exposure, and thus not matter how groundbreaking and thought provoking their rhymes, no one will notice. Or the rapper with a big contract, who will the majority of the time have less thought provoking lyrics, but will spread his art further.

Either way, they are just some reflections, it doesn't affect how I approach music. I don't seek commercial or underground rap, I just seek what sounds good.

Just finished listening to it, very, very good, but I found as the album went on it got a little bit worse, still an amazing album and my vote for album of the year

So given the album two listens now. still not sure what I think about it. some tracks I really like, others bore me to tears (mostly Devil in a new Dress).

Kanye and Sufjan Stevens should do an album together.

madhawk

I JUST LOVE HOW HE DELIBERATELY TRIE TO MESS THINGS UP

IT'S A NIGHTMARE TO MUSIC!!!!

I just got an excellent mix by some guys called Ludachrist, who usually make drum n bass under a different alias. It's not strictly hip hop, it's basically a mash-up mix but one of the best examples I've heard. Anyone into DJs like Z*Trip, Scratch Perverts, Girl Talk (shudder) should really check it out.
