Awesome today. Best ball striking I have seen for a bit. Forget that she was playing a kid. She will go close to winning the whole thing. Well done Sam.
Interesting to note though the Ferguson match. The commentator suggested that Ferguson was struggling with her fitness. Bloody hell what is it with elite sportspeople? First Bollinger and now this. Take a leaf out of Stosur's book, work hard and the results will look after themselves.

It is Stosur..the same person that handed Schiavone a grand slam!

Did you actually watch that final? Handing it to Schiavone is an unfair statement. Schiavone played very well in that match and went for it the whole match and it paid off. Stosur did not play bad in the final, Schiavone just played better. Let's not forget she beat Serena, Henin and Jankovic to make the final.

However, we should not be talking about Stosur winning the AO yet. It is not her favourite surface and once she does get an opponent that can attack the backhand and give her much less time to prepare, then she will have a harder time of it. But I think she can make the semis with her draw, providing she gets past Kvitova in the 3rd round.

Hi Stubbsy!

She was pretty good though. Ferguson on the other hand has mental issues. Hopefully the wobbly she chucked makes it to the the tube.
it looked to me a sign of a girl whos at the crossroads and is desperately trying to achieve something out of tennis. You almost had to feel sorry for her after that eruption but on the other hand the shocking way she capitualated sent me a message that she just isnt good enough, good players dont fall in a heap so badly like that, this is a professional business and if your not good enough than your wasting yours and everyone else's time.

According to her presser after the match tonight, Stosur thought she played well.

I was obviously watching a different match.

I agree, I honestly have no idea how she could say that.
1. She was pushing like I've never seen her push before. She was not going for anything, i.e. she was trying not to lose the points, not win them. I interpret this as a mental choke, sorry Sammy.
2. How can you say you don't know how you lost the tiebreak when the only reason you were up is due to your opponents unforced errors?
3. Did anyone see where Kvitova was at the net and all she had to do was go either side of her, or even fire it straight back at her really hard. She hit the ball at the bottom of the net. IMO that was the indicator.

Its good that she's not going to get all bothered about this, but IMO she had a huge mental lapse, maybe she worried too much about her oponent than herself. Obviously she's not gonna say "omg I shat myself, that's why I wasn't going for anything"

When she can't use her kick serve, she goes from a top 10 to a top 50:(

Well, my Sammy is out.. Shattered.

Really knew she was going to get out played and was not going to win the Open.

A few things I noticed:

- she really struggled to put whole points together, often trying to just blast her way out of it.
- Struggled to adapt to the left hander.
- She was the number one doubles player in the world, she can obviously volley, and she does it well. Why did she not come into the net and finish off points?
- Mentally, she was shot at times in the match, you could sense the urgency she had in that first set.

Until she completes her all round game (volleying included), and improves her mental strength and adaptability, she will be around the mark, but get found out against some more promising players.

I'd hate to think what her ranking will be after this year's French Open.

If she reckons she played well, what would be her opinion on her French Open conqueror winning a 4h 44m match today?

To be fair, that's what everyone said heading into last year's FO. She's good on clay, helps her kick serve and gives her more time to set up that booming forehand. I see no reason why she couldn't at least reach the Quarters to defend the majority of her points.

Strange dilemma for the No.1 Aussie female tennis player. She's good, but she can only excel on clay. Ironically, a surface not many Aussies have excelled on.

Sam needs a few more strings to her bow. The kick serve and occasional strong forehand ain't gonna cut it. It was clear in that final at the French last year. All respect to Schiavone, but there was no reason Sam should have lost that match. Her problems stem from a mental incapacity to step up to big occasions. It's almost like she's the current day Novotna or something.

Sam was unlucky.

The other girl is only 20, still very young and fit, and able to chase down a lot of shots.
Sam is 26 and age is catching up with her.

Also, Sam played all her games in the evening, because of Channel 7's chase for good ratings.
Big disadvantage to play at night, when Kvitova had been playing day games.
