Simple question to answer an arguement.

Please discus you answers.

I think will not write anymore that might show bias in the poll.

Reigning AA fullback is probably a good indication that yes, he is.

I say CHB is more important, look at where the deemed to be best forwards play (Niewoldt, Buddy, Brown, Pav) all CHF. Thats why I would say Harry Taylor is the best defender.

Jack is the exception to this though who plays mainly FF and is the Coleman medalist.

yeah and st kilda were the 2nd best team last year ook at them now

lake is the best vfl defender

When we play those teams, Lake plays on those players.

In fact, his best game was where he absolutely destroyed Buddy in 2009.

Vs Lions, Morris took Fev while Lake played on Brown. Vs Saints he played on Nick. Vs Freo he played on Pav when pav played forward.

Difficult question.

Is Franklin the best forward in the AFL?
Pick a time when a player is down on form or returning from injury and you will get a few respondents saying "no".

Poll needs to be more specific in terms of time frame and role.

Is he the most "in form", I would say no. Heath Shaw, Jamison (guessing why you started the pole) and Merrett are 3 of the top.

Is he the best general defender if in form? Would be close. An in form Goddard might give him a shake.

Is he the best KPD when in form? Merrett is playing well at the moment, as is McPharlin and Jamison. But at his peak I would probably say Harry Taylor is his best competition.

He was dropped to the VFL to find match fitness if anything. Pretty flawed assessment by you there.

All players get injuries from time to time. If Jack Riewoldt is coming back from an injury and plays VFL, does that make him not the best forward in the AFL?

welcome to 2011 lake has been dropped to the vfl

Are you still talking about that game Buddy played on the wing for most of the game.

Hell Morris is better than Lake.

He's carrying an injury. Players go back to find fitness all the time.
no hes out of form needs to prove himself in the vfl before he makes his afl return

again lake is not the best defender in the league quite a few ahead of him atm

at his best, undoubtedly

reads the ball brilliantly, is a great spoiler and mark, has good burst speed, clean skills and good awareness

A great player - please come join the Hawks.

In terms of "best defender", I would have Harry Taylor before him...but Lake is a damn good second.

people have short memories it seems... lake and harry taylor are the best IMO..... cant really think of anyone who can match it with the big boys and also provide a form of attack like these guys!!

Brian Lake is overrated ... Was a solid player over a decent period of time, and probably was the premier FB in years gone by, but not now. Mick Jamison is the best FB in 2011 performance wise, but it's a long season

Yes, but the AA position this year will probably end up with Merret, Jamison or maybe even Reid, who's escaped mention so far.

This is an intelligent post

Not really I'm only joking sorry bro

Lake and Taylor are the best easily, Taylor having the better year clearly. Playing superb! Love him. Although no one can argue that when in form they would rather have Lake

Your question is the best defender, so I would rather Hodge or Goddard roaming my defence before Lake.

Far from it from the moment. But when he's fit he'd be right up there, if not at the top.

I think i've always liked Morris more than Lake. More of your hard at it stopper. Dogs have been blessed having those two in the backline the last few years.

Yeah good points above, poll is a bit misleading. Should of probably said best traditional defender (ie. playing on a man stopping him kicking goals), these days you would probably take a Goddard, Hodge, Shaw type first.

Had to go back to the VFL because he had absolutely no pre season after 3 surgeries in the off season. Pretty reasonable if you ask me...

When at his best, he is the best.
Harry Taylor would be 2nd imo.

you can't be serious

hodge and goddard, while great play makers from defense really aren't elite 'defenders' as such

Yes I can, Rutten, Jamison, Carlisle, Richards, Scarlett, Bock, Hooker, Frawley can all stop forwards kicking goals, much harder to find the great players back their like a Hodge or Goddard, who are elite. I dont think Lake has been as awesome as people say, maybe played 2 or 3 very good years.
