Interesting times down at the den. The only gurantee is a couple of handy draft picks, unfortunately not as handy as others from the past.

How do we raid the Coasties talent pool?

Well he chose not to select our most successful tagger this year in Raines...not the first time he has made a blunder at the selection table either. Why wouldn't you play Raines to play on any one of Martin, Cotchin, Deledio, Foley etc etc?

I totally agree on this one. I think there is room for a genuine tagger in our team no doubt, and I think he does the role pretty well.

I am personally sick and tired of this poor excuse or reason as to where the club finds itself. That was 7 bloody years ago!!! I would hate to know how many players we have constantly flipped over during that period, but it is nothing more than a cop out and the success we had then should defintely not be an excuse for now, we've had plenty of years now to get it right, but we haven't for a plethora of reasons.

So what would you have the club do to redress this?

There's no way we have bottomed out yet.

When we lose JB, Power and Black THAT"S when we'll have bottomed out.

Do you honestly believe that we haven't bottomed out? If Brown retires in 3 years, that's 3 years of development into our forward line and midfield...if we bottom out again with our core midfielders hitting their peak then our rebuild atm is all a waste.

Thought Collier played one of his better games. Stilled showed some skill deficiencies but got involved in the play and looked like a team player.

And one of the main reasons is, due to these 3 champions, we have not sunk low enough to get the prime draft picks. That is why we do not have a Martin or Cotchin coming through the system. That is the point of my post.

JB has at least a couple of years left in him, Power and Black are shadows of their former selves already.

JB is still a superstar, but there was a moment last night where I was surprised he lost one on one with his defender. During the last quarter when we were 5pts behind we had a stream out of defence that went straight to Brown and Rance beat him one on one. Could have been a bad kick to him but that was the end of it cause Richmond went off that turnover and kicked a goal. I think that was Deledio running down the whole field and slotting it from 50.

After 2 quiet weeks and not kicking a goal against Adelaide something needs to click. Either the delivery or something in his head maybe?

Nah...

The premiership era created a list imbalance in terms of age. I think we can all agree on that (or maybe that's a cop out too?).

This list imbalance was created by:

* a dearth of high draft picks from 1999-2004 (apart from the Headland trade)
* a keep the team together policy resulting in the loss of players in that age group, most notably Gram and Bolton.
* injury's and early retirements to players like Charman and Copeland.
* arguably poor drafting, with few very good players emerging from the draft picks we did have.

The thing about having a dearth of players in a particular age group, is that it follows you. As the players get older, the imbalance remains. Players in that 1999-2004 age group comprise many of the best players in the competition to this day.

Your holier than though attitude seems to deprive you of any sympathy for (and it appears, understanding of) the predicament the Lions have been left in. I hate to break it to you, but it will be a few more years yet before we have a balanced list with a core group of players in the 22 - 28 age range.

The loss of Sherman, Rischitelli, Macdonald and Brennan was obviously another cause of our age imbalance.

Frankly, player development has been a problem for us since 2000. Mostly it was the same group of players who contributed to our success from 1999 to 2004. Matthews was great at getting existing players to reach their potential, but he wasn't quite as good at developing rookies. When he left the Magpies their list was in a pretty bad way as well.

Doesn't mean Voss is blameless though. His assessment of our list after 2009 was completely off.

Interesting that you say that given Voss' main assessment of our list was that it was unbalanced...

Based on what, notting? His main target for recruitment was a 29 year old full forward.

If you leave Fev aside, Buchanan/Staker/Raines/Maguire/Clarke were all brought in as the list was lacking mature "middle aged" bodies from those 1999 to 2004 drafts. We had aging stars and promising youth but nothing in between.

The execution was generally poor, but I think the basic strategy had some logic behind it (and assessment of the list's "mix" was okay).

Collier has a habit of running himself into trouble and taking on his opponent when he doesn't need to.

In the backline, that is a crippling deficiency. In the forwardline, it can sometimes work.

He still needs to improve his skills and learn when to take on his opponent, but it definitely hurts less to see him do that where it doesn't result in a goal to the opposition.

I thought Goose did a great job on Jack, I was sitting down the end with the Richmond masses and watched him trying to impregnate him for most of the match, truely looked like two lovers embracing. He did everything he could to distract him from the contest.

P.S. Why is there a primary school virtually on the back door step of the ground? we walked around to get to gate 9 and had to walk through a sandpit, bizarre.

Yup this thread is pretty much what I expected to find after steering clear for a few days... some very nicely thought out match analysis buried amongst the usual hysteria and carry on.

Would be nice if the match day thread could ocassionally be about the match itself

Simple...the school was there first

ie it was there before the redevelopment of the Gabba ground.

The school wasn't going to shut up shop and bugger off somewhere else just so some johnny-come-lately Richmond supporter didn't have to look at their sandpit.

What have you got against sandpits anyway?;)

Why is the Gabba a home away from home for all other Melbourne clubs?
WHat Victorian would not want to get away from the cold and spend a weekend in southeast Queensland and see their footy team at the same time? Sitting in a beer garden in brilliant sunshine in 'winter' is a luxury we don't get.
I do the trip every year and love it. Brisbane is a ripper of a place and I love the Gabba as a venue.
Just a few observations on your team. You are young and you are injury riddled. Redden is a jet. Rockliff is a gun and Leunberger is a ripper. I didn't think the Lions threw in the towel at all. It was only a bit of Dustin Martin magic that separated the two teams and 31 points was not a true reflection of the game. In fact in both games this year, Brisbane's youth has impressed me greatly.
But...no more shortcuts. Voss must go with youth and youth only from here on in. There will be some pain, but it is amazing how quickly a club can develop. We lost our first 9 last year and were widely tipped to go winless. We are still a long way off being a good side, but we are getting there and with the right decisions, it will happen for Brisbane as well.

Yup, it's easy to spot the tourist in the shorts and T-shirt when all the locals are rugged up :D
