Re: Rivalries & Bets

We did it at the start of the season so you'd need all of your league's teams to send you their Round 1 team.

Re: Rivalries & Bets

Curnow in only one of the 32 starting SCE teams, that's so low looking back on it.
That's cos you said he wont play ;) :p

Yeah I think he shocked many people when he came out scoring as he did. I know I attended the last two pre season matches in which he played in and for both matches he was a sub and he was kicking some shocking kicks so personally I didn't think he was best 22 material but I was proven wrong...

Re: Rivalries & Bets

I'd hazard a guess that one of the big differences between those SCErs in the top 500 and those struggling was willingness to jump on early season bolters.

True but it can also backfire. I jumped on the early season bolter in Adcock only to see him crash and burn!

Some bolters continue on and some crumble! Only difference between my earlier in the season ranking of <500 to my current ranking of 1700.

Re: Rivalries & Bets

why no love for Stevie J either?? surprised by his low number given every indication was he would play mid-field plus he will always have that freaky goal kicking ability??

i also gambled on Leon Davis early - traded him out just before he came good, damm that hurts every week!

That was PowerOfThePussy and he is ranked 13th, but alot of us jumped on Curnow (except Biggie:D) in round 3.

I for one thought Curnow was just keeping Ellard and McLeans seat warm.

Was worth a risk for sure if you wanted a PoD.

If you check Stevie Js games record, it is not overly great...misses 4-5+ games per season quite often. That and his scoring pattern is VERY frustrating...lots of highs and lots of lows.

Having said all that, every season I pick 1 risky prospect for a PoD and this season it was Higgins which totally backfired. But it explains why i wouldnt have Stevie J as a second risky prospect.

Re: Rivalries & Bets

+ 1.

Sometimes too much club knowledge backfires. In this case, the less informed won out :D

Lol - yeah I'm happy to admit I got a bit lucky on Ed Curnow. His prospectus write up sounded brilliant to me though and he scored 42sc from 10dt (5 handballs) in one of his pre season games from memory. That and the fact that he was named in the first round sold me. But yeah, pretty tinny. Didn't expect him to score as well as he did - was a big bonus and saved me a trade on most of the field early on.

I didn't either. Hurt greatly.

Re: Rivalries & Bets

Lots of really good picks in the list provided :thumbsu:

The one that surprises me, and that is low on overall selection percentage is Heppell.

It seems there was a decent school of thought that he was too expensive.

PK also didnt start with him which may suggest YSSC also had the same issues with him.

Just shows you everyone (including me with Curnow) can over-analyze things.

For Heppell, he was more physically rdy than most. I thought he was a bargain for the Bombers in the draft, not just now in hindsight. And the Bombers had open spots in the backline. When you have slattery playing, then you have open spots!

26/32 picked him if my maths is correct.

I unfortunately was one of the six that didn't. Without a doubt my biggest mistake.

Re: Rivalries & Bets

Curnow :(

Opens up old wounds that does.

My thing was being sucked into the 1 player from each team per line thingy!

I agonized over bucking the trend and having Deledio/Newman, Goddard/Fisher, Pendles/Swan, Murphy/Judd, and Buddy/Rioli. Ok, the last one didnt turn out but the theory was flawed and cost teams premium players they wanted. Particularly with Collingwood and Carlton players who did not have multi-team byes.

I gave up good player choices...and this is not about points, this is just about a flawed pre-season theory!

For those that bucked this thought...kudos :thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

Re: Rivalries & Bets

I would suggest the issue is more picking Swan over Pendlebury than not picking both.

Maybe...i'm thinking before you use hindsight on their current scores.

If prior to the season started you could list 6 mids you wanted without any restrictions, I would have gone:

Swan
Ablett
Pendlebury
Selwood
Judd
Murphy

The theory of one premium per line stopped many SC teams then taking Pendlebury + Swan and/or Judd + Murphy.

Looking back now you could have chosen those combos quite easily and survived. Of course, Swan didnt fire as expected - hindsight.

My point would be that if next season had the exact same set up, you would see a huge increase in number of teams having Swan/Pendles and/or Judd/Murph. How their scores end up is luck based on form and injuries...the strategy is not due to 3 bench players and MPP covering two premiums out quite easily.

BTW
I'm just posting to push my count closer to 2000 and the next rank up. It's no big deal to me, just half interesting!

Re: Rivalries & Bets

Swan actually started the year very well and was burning the coaches who didn't have him. The leg injury he got plus the extra week off is what wasn't good. He still has the 6th highest average for a midfielder in the game (116.4) with missing one game and playing a few injured. I'm not sure why people are saying he wasn't a wise choice, don't be surprised if he finishes with an average of around 120 which is what was expected of him.
