With the release of the 2012 AFL Fixture draw now just hours away I have started up this thread where all comments about the fixture can go.

A mod will turn this thread into a "megathread" soon.

Keep all comments within this thread rather than open up separate ones.

this is what the AFL fixture should have been based from:

“ FOR VICTORIAN TEAMS THE NUMBER OF INTERSTATE MATCHES HOSTED BY AN INTERSTATE TEAM NEEDS TO BE EQUAL TO THE NUMBER OF MATCHES A VICTORIAN TEAM HOSTS AN INTERSTATE TEAM “ (BEN.C.)


The groups of teams are for fixturing purposes only and is in no way conferences or divisions like in US sports
Ladder positions are still determined on wins, draws, losses and percentage and has absolutely nothing to do with what teams you played from what fixturing group
The teams simply need to be broken up to even things up for fixturing purposes
　


Some Victorian teams have 4 interstate trips versus interstate teams and host 4 interstate teams
Some Victorian teams have 5 interstate trips versus interstate teams and host 5 interstate teams

Collingwood
Richmond
Hawthorn

# group A is for the big clubs and predominately MCG teams (and draw the big crowds)
# group A teams will play other group A teams twice per season (1 home and 1 away)
# group A will play group B teams once per season, 1 section of group B at home and 1 group of section B teams away (it will be the reverse of the other 3 teams in the same group
# group A will play group C teams once per season, 1 section of group C at home and 1 group of section B teams away (it will be the reverse of the other 3 teams)
- Collingwood-Richmond-Hawthorn will have the exact fixture as each other
- Carlton-Essendon-Melbourne will have the exact fixture as each other

West Coast
Brisbane

#group C is an all interstate group which means they will still play the teams in group C twice (1 at home and 1 away) and the other teams in group A and B once (3 teams from each group A and group B will be at home and 3 teams from group A and B will be away
-West Coast-Brisbane-GWS will have the exact fixture as each other
-Fremantle-Gold Coast-Sydney will have the exact fixture as each other
　
　
　
　
This grouping of teams in the fixture allows victorian teams to play more games against victorian teams
The inequity in this design is the victorian teams in group B play more games versus interstate teams and less games versus the big victorian teams than group A teams meaning less revenue - the simple solution for this is another equalisation fund for groups B and C
The league will in fact make more money off this design as victorian teams will play each other more often and play less games versus interstate teams - all the main rivalries are in the same group so not even that will be affected
　
　
The afl fixture in 2009 had victorian teams playing 44 home and 44 away games versus interstate teams
The afl fixture in 2010 had victorian teams playing 43 home and 43 away games versus interstate teams
The afl fixture in 2011 had victorian teams playing 47 home and 47 away games versus interstate teams (17 teams)
Under the current afl fixture there will likely be even more games versus interstate teams in 2012 as there are more interstate teams which is more unfair and will also mean less money is made by victorian clubs
　
Under my plan for 2012 victorian teams would play:
6 teams play 4/4 versus interstate teams = 24/24 games (H and A)
4 teams will play 5/5 versus interstate teams = 20/20 games (H and A)
Total games victorian teams will play against interstate teams = 44 home/44 away
