A story taken off the news interviews tonight that Dawes and Pendles did at Vic Park during a kids clinic.

"I probably didn't realise how tough it would be to overcome,” said Dawes, who missed two months with the problem.
“When I hurt the hand I was told it would be four to six weeks and I thought, 'All right, when that time comes if I’ve ticked all the boxes I’ll be able to come back and make an impact' and I just couldn't.
“I was pretty terrible, especially for the first few weeks I was back. I've learnt a lot from that experience, but it was disappointing. It probably hit me at the end of the year how much I'd invested in it and how exhausted I really was.

He's being a bit hard on himself, he wasn't terrible, he just couldn't get back to full fitness and struggled like most big men do when they are not 100%.

Plus he ran into a great backline in that Grand Final.

Good to see he knows where he went wrong though, and is willing to fix it.:)

A bit disappointed with the red being added to what I assume is a training jumper. Looks suspiciously like another team.

So you're a Melbourne Victory fan then?

Because the only thing that jumper looks like is a Melbourne Heart guernsey with a Collingwood emblem.

Shows how Honest Dawes is about his game.

Another Lesson Learned

Wish he learnt it before Scarlett made him his bitch personally.

Ah well onto 2012 we move

Don't think it is at all to harsh. Structurally we, more often than not were worse upon his return. Glad he was hard on himself, hopefully it's a sign of a guy who is really driven.

I dont even see it as being that hard on himself.

He's just being honest, and if you aren't honest with yourself you won't get far.

Compared to his form early rounds he was indeed terrible. He offered very little upon returning from injury. The honesty gives me hope, as I posted in another thread of he can't become a consistent foil (35-40 goals) to cloke even against the best sides, then it'll be bad for the team and disappointing

Well Scarlett has made many Forward look silly so Dawes is not the Only one

Played 5 games upon return.
Round 23 quiet, Round 24 quiet 2 goals, QF quiet 1 goal, PF 5 marks 3 goals, GF quiet nil goals.
His 3 goal prelim was the only highlight.
Total 17 marks, 22 kicks, 6 goals over 5 games (down on his 2010 stats).
He knows he can do better. Hope he does.

I think the big thing for Dawes for me is bridging the bad and the good. For mine he still too often plays well in games we win comfortably and doesn't offer or present much in games against better sides where we struggle. As you mentioned he does need to be a better foil to Cloke more consistently.

This cannot be said of his effort in the 2010 GF.

Agree, although the start of 2011 he was taking strong marks. He seemed to stop that and then he broke his knuckle. It's the area he needs to work on most.

Yes and no

Early season he was protecting the drop zone and was stronger in the lead, over head and contested was still poor. Upon returning he was out bustled and continually tried to mark everything on the chest making himself very easy to spoil.

Both you and Copeland are right it is the biggest weakness in his game his kicking is fine but he does need to clunk a few and then as he showed early last season he is a real handful.

Last season his form was like at least half the team and for probably the same reason ie injury but his form had tapered off at least a month before he broke his hand,he was on fire early in the season but once the injury occured
and the extended lay off it was over.

Last season the team was carried by about 8 to 10 players and we need a more even spread of consistent performers and then we can get back to the top again.:thumbsu:

He has a bad case of concrete hands. Seems to attack the ball with his arms at lockout, meaning there is no give and unless he times it perfectly, the ball bounces out.
Earlier this year he was being panned for taking the ball too close to his body, allowing a defender to punch from behind, He has obviously tried to address this and hasn't got it quite right yet.

To his credit he's aware of his deficiencies and in his favor is the fact he is very young still as key forwards go.

That can just be a confidence thing. All players go through that. I remember this year pre injury everyone saying we had the best 'twin towers' in the comp
