Port say NO to Leon

would not surprise me at all to see this happen - was predicted several weeks ago.

It would definitely surprise me if this happens, I can't see Leon coming back now. It would be a pleasant surprise though if it happened, still upset that we didn't get the deal done to keep him on.

Hope Leon gets something worked out, terrible way to end your career.

Maybe a rookie spot at Pies, with some agreement of employment in WA for the club post career to recompense. WA recruiting manager.

This is one example of the hurt caused by the inflationary pressure caused by GWS.

I'd prefer the club to resign themselves to losing one star player.

We'd be compensated reasonably.

Then we can pay all our players a salary that is sustainable to our future, rather than scrambling to pay more to this one and that one, and the other one, each time the supposed or real attention of GWS hovers over each of maybe 10-15 possible targets.

We've already lost Leon, nearly Caff as well, due to the above.

Im quite puzzled by the entire situation.

Granted family is a big pull for some players, but Leon was happy to go to Adelaide?

Leon was a best 22 player at a club fighting for premierships. To walk away from that when you spend your entire career fighting to win a flag is puzzling to me.

He was still going to be offered a very solid pay cheque...ie $200K per year.

Once leaving football, earning $200K per year aint the norm.

A shame really, but Leon made his decision to leave hopefully he is happy being back home with his family.

he has a stack of family here, his wife is from here. Hence he would have lived here and may still do

There is no way Leon will comeback to us. He does not wanna play AFL so bad, if he can get good $$$ and stay with family then he will, if not then it doesnt matter he will just play wafl or the sanfl.

can we please stop with the "he left for money" crap. It has nothing to do with why he left.

Well its obvious the money was a big part of him leaving Collingwood or he would be at Port or swans district for the love of the game, but both have reported that he wants too much cash. That to me says that it was more about money than family.
If he wanted to be near family he would be playing for minimum chips at Port Adelaide. I think Leon got ahead of himself.

When teams ask how much you want then obviously you are going to ask for a bit and then you negotiate. Port cant afford him even if he said i will play for $150k.
Leon will be playing local footy in WA or SA. Money was not why he left Collingwood.

I understand why the club did it but its very unfair to dump a pay cut on a guy who has had the best year in his career....no justice... its the gws fault...pricks
I don't know, his last contract was signed after he was AA and a star of the team, this time around the salary cap is a lot tighter, he's old and we have a group of players that are better than him with more upside.

As for Leon coming back, it won't happen. He turned us down when he was offered $250k/year, he wouldn't return to Melbourne for $60k/year or whatever the rookie salary is. I'm sure he'll be playing in Perth next year.

Port can afford him, they're nowhere near playing with a full salary cap, and they've got a sponsor saying they'll sign on big $ if they get Davis. Port aren't getting him because of his age.

You can almost blame this on how the draft work. If Port win more games they get worse picks.

No sympathy for him at all.

He has made his bed and now he has to lie in it. Fact is he was overpaid for a lot of his time at the Pies v his output and at the end of the day, when it really matters ie Sept, he goes missing.

I don't care why he left, he left, it was his own choice and now he can deal with the fall out. West Coast and Freo had refused to trade for him for years, they obviously did not rate him and yet he walked without a deal.

I hope he saved money cos he is about to face reality of the average wage.

60k is better than nothing, which is what he's on now

I think he'll be too proud to come back to Collingwood. I would be. I'd prefer to play for less in the Wafl and at least be able to pretend that I don't care about the money rather then come back to my boss asking for the same job back for a lesser amount then what he was originally going to pay me that I refused. I think Leon shot himself in the foot here. Sure he was willing to go for minimum wage to a wa team but neither of them were even willing to pay him that...

Lol as if. He left for the money thinking any of the W.A or S.A clubs would pay him whatever he wanted. In his mind if he was going to leave it might aswell be closer to family - trying to kill 2 birds with the one stone.

Part of the attraction of Swan Districts was a development job with BHP, that is gone. Looks like Pickering has really killed Leon's career.

Maybe he should have picked up the phone when the club tried to call him.

My thoughts exactly wtf is he paying Pickering for?..he should be giving the best advice fom the start which was to stay at the pies..and a large part was the money it's too late into his career to worry about being too far from home what's 1 more year ..2 yrs max.?? so after Leon told Bucks at the Copeland that he was in it was just a matter of putting pen to paper...then the dollars discussion brought it all to a halt..that's how I read it & I blame pickers. Leon is too good to be playing WAFL

This is a very good point you make about 1 moment he has signed and is going on next season and next it is see ya later without no reason. The other point you make which is pertainent is the fact he only has 1 or 2 more season,s left and would have played 250+ games if all things remained equal and that is not to be sneezed at.

I think like most people here that he and his manager have brought this upon themselves it is to late to come back now as a rookie or anything else.

It's a bit of a joke that a player who has 2 All Australians in his last 3 seasons, and has only just turned 30 can't find a club.

Apart from the top 5-6 clubs, who probably can't fit him in, even at close to minimum wage, every other club should be clambering over each other to take Leon as a mature aged rookie, or even in the PSD.

Take a Richmond for example, there supporters have been that starved of success, even finals appearances for so long, that to suggest that they won't draft a Leon Davis because of his age is just stupid, when he could get them those 2 extra wins that means a finals appearance. Instead they want John McCarthy, who never will be a finals footballer, and who will never win a game of AFL senior football of his own boot as long as his arse points to the ground.

Just seems dumb to me.

With no one being interested in him it more so shows that other clubs don't rate Leon, he did have a very narrow field of 4 teams he wanted to get too. If he just wanted to leave then another Melbourne club might have taken him.

He was homesick, he can probably get a job that pays out over $60k/year outside of football in Perth. I doubt he'd be desperate for it either, playing football for 11 years and in the last 2 years earning $500k+. Being in Melbourne and being miserable wasn't worth the reported $250k let alone $60k.
