What to do with the Port Magpies?

i don't understand the idea of killing the magpies, our reserves side, and making a 'power reserves side', which we already have, called the magpies.
The latter leaves us with no enduring commitment to be in the SANFL as it drags everyone around it down in its death throes.

I definitely agree that we need a reserves side but you can see it actually happening?

We need 6 votes on the SANFL commission (2/3rds) to get it through. Each SANFL club gets one vote and there is one vote I think for the Country Leagues. We don't have any votes as we gave up our right to vote in the OneClub merger.

Tell me where are votes from the 6 SANFL clubs going to come from? The only way it would go through is if the SANFL clubs were offered cash incentives. You can put a line through Glenelg and North already. They are not going to vote for it.
As the SANFL keep getting deeper in the mire and becoming desperate, they will do anything to keep their status and reputations and when the SANFL clubs realise that they can't survive because they are not getting people to their games, the "novelty" of playing an AFL type side will appeal to them as a way of generating interest in the local league.

The more that Port agitate to have their players treated the way they want, the more the SANFL clubs will get jack of Port and it's players and the more likely they are to get rid of these players. The more players that come to the Maggies in this manner the better although, it would be better if the SANFL would dispense with the SANFL "draft" after the AFL draft and just allowed all players drafted by Port to go to the Maggies.

Either which way, the Maggies will become the Power's reserve team either officially or unofficially.

Port have had the wood on most clubs in the sanfl simply because as Fos Williams said port were bigger bodied and were playing a faster brand of footy and as central have proved it can be achieved by all sanfl clubs, so by port and the tingles having reserve teams should only inspire the other sanfl clubs to raise the bar a little and for the sanfl to open their *****n eyes and see the bigger picture for once, because without Port and the cows the sanfl is doomed

Why do people have this insane desire to kill off a football club??? Firstly it's not yours to kill off. Secondly if you have ever played sport you will realise that a club is not the play thing of those who haven't played for it or haven't had to manage it.

Too many of you guys assume the draft will be in pace for ever. Says who? One decent challenge to the federal court and the draft is gone. Look at the 2 NSW and 2 Qld teams that have academies partly funded by the AFL . If the draft goes, they are in a great position to leap into the brave new world. I want our club to do the same.

The Magpies will be our reserves team within a few years. The management are already planning for it. The whole merger was based on the Magpies structure lasting, not being dissolved by fans who can't see past next month.

It is such a waste of time and effort in trying to break it up again. The Magpies are run at break even but their pokies and pub give the group a couple of great asset that down the track will reap large dividends, as the pokies numbers are capped and the Casino is buying back 500 pokie licences.

When we get things right, ie the bloody SANFL off our backs, we will have monies to put into junior development. Have a decent u/16 and u/18 programs, you lose kids to the draft, but you will always have that potential go home factor.

For 15 years we didn't run the group efficiently because of the artificial split. It wont be humming over night, it takes time.

Well said REH.

The work we are putting in no to reinvest in the Maggies culture, the zone, the youth development etc. will pay off and will see us get back to where we need to be.

Having Richardson oversee the coaching and Burgess fitness will pay dividends over time too.

I posted this in the aaron young thread after he moved to the magpies but I think its more relevant here:

Having two AFL reserve sides in the SANFL might be a good thing by making the competition more relevant to those who only really follow the AFL. Generally speaking the under 25 generation don't really care that much about what's happening in the SANFL anyway - perhaps this is a way to get them interested.

Strong football in SA means two strong AFL teams, not the second best comp in the land tag. Giving port and the crows feeder teams helps strengthen those two AFL teams indefinitely which, in turn, reflects well on the state. No one from Perth or Melb cares how Norwood or the panthers are going this year and therefore make a judgement on SA football, its if port/crows are up. Visa versa with westcoast and freo, I don't care if claremont are winning.

As for possible rules regarding the magpies as a reserves side in the SANFL...

I've long thought that port should have all our AFL listed talent on the park playing for the magpies at Alberton. Since there won't be enough players for a full SANFL squad, you fill out the remaining players on that list with guys under the age of 23. This should keep the SANFL even so the feeder teams don't dominate with the better talent and it still encourages the development of port players in our zone until they are in their twenties (Important!!). It should keep the other SANFL teams happy as it gives them a chance to poach our better zoned/filler players after they turn 23 (since by that stage they probably aren't going to be drafted to the AFL anyway).

win, win, win, win, situation.

I would be interested to hear what your thoughts would be if the Port Magpies become the Power's reserves side?

As I said before, if by some minor miracle there are AFL reserves teams allowed in the SANFL, I can see some very stringent conditions being attached to this, e.g not being eligible for finals and so on. There is no way the existing SANFL clubs are going to let a Port or Crows reserve team become a strong team in the SANFL.

How would you feel about going to watch the Port Magpies play when they really are only existing for the purposes of keeping all of the Power players in the one team and not playing for points as such as they are ineligble to play in finals?

I think we need to think about all the possbile options that could occur with a reserves team.

I think that the Magpies should follow the VFL model - ie the Coburg Tigers are the reserves for Richmond.

It makes sense logistically in that they train at the same place and use the same facilities. It would return the Magpies to the powerhouse that they deserve to be.

This thread can only generate 3 pages, may be that is most fans think about the answer to the title of this thread.
(What to do with the Port Magpies)

Or that the premise of the thread is so spurious that they don't want to be come involved.

Yes and from what I have seen on TV the VFL has stepped up a cog in recent years because of the direct link to AFL clubs.

But the SANFL still think they have the second best comp in the land which is a joke!

OK REH, I'll be here in three years, so will you. Lets revisit this then.

They probably still have the second best competition in the land which is a sad indictment on the other comps.

In my personal opinion and sorry if this upsets Peddo69.
The Port magpies would be followed much more if they were a reserves side for the Power.
It wouldn't really matter if they won or lost as long as the Power based players played together and learned team tactics ready for the step up in leagues when the call beckons.
I for one would probably follow them more closely.
At the moment I wouldn't know where they sit on the ladder or who even plays for them other than Miklejon and our Power based players. I know the coach is an ex crows player from South Adelaide who's name escapes me at the moment? I am sure I am not the only Power supporter who is in the same boat.

8 team comp with WA?

port (west), norwood (east), centrals (north) and sturt (south)

East Perth (East), Freo (south), Subiaco (west) and Joondalup (north)

They probably still have the second best competition in the land which is a sad indictment on the other comps.

No it's not. It shows that the other competitions have their priorities right.

You don't think the SANFL is relevant or important to footy?
I think it should be irrelevant to the PAFC. Thats the discussion, right?

But the SANFL still think they have the second best comp in the land which is a joke!

The fact the West Lakes "old boys club" still spout on about being the second best comp speaks volumes about their mindset.

Who wants to be second best?

I firmly believe REH is on the $$$. Sadly many of the current League squad are gap fillers until our AFL recruits come home and the next generation of juniors mature.

It doesn't have to come together overnight. It just has to come together properly.

Make them the reserves, look at the afl premiers of late and look at their set ups

Wind them up

We are in the AFL now. Well done to the 143 years of history, lets focus on the main game

This is a no brainer
