Adam Goodes lacks courage in the contested situations when he goes in feet first

Questioning Adam Goodes is a bit like killing Bambi, the defense is just as hysterical at times as the headline.
Fact is, he does slide in feet first at times. I was surprised he wasnt suspended for it in the Grand Final last year for sliding into Rioli I think?
it is definately not a courage issue, more of a technique thing.

Just saw on FoxSports News he did the same thing vs Port last year?
At his age, I highly doubt this is a technique issue.

He needs to be sanctioned for it to truly make him understand its a dog act - ala Judas.

Well I'm sure Adam is a huge soccer fan, what with his inherent muscle memory when it comes to what he did last week being explained by Roos as a throwback to his soccer playing days.
Just who exactly did he play for?? Is the fact that Goodes apparently played so much soccer irrelevant?
In 37 pages, has one single poster here backed the Paul Roos "muscle memory" explanation?

No.

So why keep bringing it up?

Everyone, even Goodes' staunchest defenders like myself, thinks it's a crock.

Yeah agree, stomping on someones head is definitely courageous and one of those galdiatorial moments...so was our courageous warrior Lukey Hodge when he deliberately stuck his foot out to trip Nigel Lappin in his first game back after a knee reco, and put him out for yet another month. Nice target to choose.
He could have so easily stuck his head over the ball in a far more courageous manner.

Try to imagine the ramifications and fallout if a Geelong player targetted Luke Ball's bung leg tonight in the same way...be interesting to hear that whiney, hypocritical attention seeker's comments on how courageous it was...Brereton never stuck his head over the ball in his life.

The MRP / Tribunal would be better off with an "eye for an eye" punishment for players committing reckless actions on the footy field. Gibson now misses a week because Goodes has soccer player muscle memory.

If a reckless action breaks a guys jaw he sits out until the player injured recovers... It's far from the perfect system but it would be much better than the joke that it currently is.

If the Hawks were playing Geelong this week, Gibson plays.

Clarko showing GWS a lack of respect here not playing Gibson.

But on the topic of doing whatever its takes to win a flag, I have no problem with an aggressive contest at the ball, even if it borders on dangerous.
Goodesy bruised Rioli in the GF, never mind how he did it. He wasn't reported or suspended for it meaning it was perfectly legal. All this talk saying it doesn't look good is nonsense. Rioli played out the game, he was just in a soft frame of mind after the incident. Well done Goodes.
Whatever it takes.......................or......................let's play some unsociable football....................as Hawthorn chose to do since the line in the sand game.
There was nothing courageous about some of that stuff that Clarko ordered his players to do on their way to the 2008 p'ship. In fact, since then, the Hawks stopped playing that style & they haven't had the same success. The only one that still does the unsociable stuff really is Buddy. He is just clumsy at times but it unsettles his opponents.

Rioli had all summer to get over what ever bruise Goodes gave him on GF day. But the mental demons for his performance, or lack of, will be with him forever.

Whatever it takes!

It dates back to the good ole' days.

Goodesy is just a star that has a few flaws. That's life. Should he hurt someone badly by sliding into a contest then he will face the full force of the AFL community but guess what? The bulk of the noise is mainly coming from the Hawks so it can only be put down to sour grapes as far as I'm concerned.

Things happen at certain contests. He's played a lot of games meaning he's had more contests than most, creating more situations where Goodesy may be a little crude at some of these contests. Hodgey hasn't been totally innocent. He is very aggressive at the contest when he's kicked the ball off the ground. But I love the way he generally goes about his football.

This is just more of a Hawthorn issue as opposed to a general AFL issue.

I had to laugh at the soccer muscle memory explanation however I wont dispute that it should be a free kick that's how it was ruled even as I was growing up if sliding into a pack. With Goodes its not a cowards act, I thinks its more the fact he likes to keep his feet and he won a lot of ball that way over the years trapping it and sliding back to his feet with the ball in his hands. Its a flaw in his technique these days as its officiated differently than it was 20yrs ago no argument from me about that.

I don't give a rats when it was, when Derm played, whacking a bloke when he wasn't looking was probably looked at worse than it is now, very un Australian

Look I was only little t the time but it seemed that the afl had a problem with lots of players doing the same thing ( king hits) and this is why they brought in video tribunal reviews so that the mums wouldn't stop kids playing afl. So I think that you are incorrect to say that king hits were seen as worse then as they were a part of the game which the afl then decided to remove. Hard for me to comment if this is a good thing as pretty much all the footy I have seen live is in the era of video.

Well, I was an adult in the 70's and it put me off watching Aussie rules as it just seemed like a sport wjere the best players hot whacked and taken out. While leaue was barbaric back then they were men who would front up to a fight, night hide and hit you from behind like a dope fiend stealing your wallet

I just noticed these comments in Damian Barrett's "Sliding Doors" column on afl.com

IF... Luke Hodge hadn’t battled injuries pretty much throughout his entire career... THEN... he’d already be nestled among the all-time greats. #maybeheisanyway

IF... Adam Goodes crudely slides into a contest again this season... THEN... there will be a revolt from opponents. #theyhavehadenough

John longmire you mean?

Its based on 3 best and FAIRESTS and 2 brownlows for best and FAIREST, fine if you think he did something wrong on the weekend, but your crusade is a bit boring, seem to have a problem with some group or player week after week that you want to moan about.

How come you can try to highlight his whole career, but people talking about other incidents are dragging up the past. Given the experts disagree with you who cares if a few flogs on big footy do, why dont you get back to your usual whinging about geelong or something else

Every panel member on league teams, all ex-players believed what Goodes did was dangerous. They all agreed he isn't a thug as do most people on here but they all thought he had history of going in to a contest feet first and needs to change his approach. I personally don't think it wa reportable but i think if he continues to attack contests in that manner he is a good chance of breaking someones leg and that is not how we want to see a champion player end his career. That is all.

Given he was sprinting and missed an erratically bouncing ball by a matter of centimetres I don't think that's entirely unfair. People on bigfooty have a bad habit of viewing replays from various angles and speeds and assuming after the viewing 5 + the player who had seconds to react had the same perspective on the incident.

Disclaimer: I am not saying what he did couldn't cause etc. etc., I'm saying it wasn't an intentional hit on Gibson.

Pretty sure that is what everyone who doesn't barrack for the Swans is saying too

Did Nigel Lappin even have a knee reco???
I can remember a broken leg, a severe ankle inury and knee tendinitis. No reco's come to mind. Care to elaborate a bit more about the Hodge incident. If he stuck his leg out and tripped Lappin in the same fashion as Fletcher has done in the past then he should have got weeks.

For me the most logical comparison to Goodes is what Fletch has done in the past, the difference is Fletch copped his whack and changed his technique. Bombers fans accepted that whereas Swans fans think Goodes is the almighty and can't put a foot wrong. Goodes has approached constsets in a dangerous manner for years its time for him to chnage or he will end up injuring someone. Whatever Dermott did back in the 80's is irrelevent. We all know he was a thug at times but he was equally courageous as he was a thug.
