It probably doesn't matter if we get Boyd or not, because we are probably in the box seat for Hugh Goddard next year.

Wouldn't that be ironic, if not a little (or a lot) awkward!

Boyd v Goddard, Pykie?
Imagine it, Losing BJ gaining Hugh :P. But yeah agree probably box seat for pick around where he is rated next year as well.

"We'll probably bring up another one or two young midfielders and we'll expose them, play them and teach them. That's the only way forward. Then we'll get to the end of the year and we'll recruit. There's no secret to getting there." -Scott Watters. It looks like mids will be the go to.

It makes sense. We were rubbish out of the middle which in turn exposed our defence and made them look worse than they are.....Which is saying something. Geez it would be nice to somehow have 2 picks inside the top 10....

As suggested to me on the Drafts and Trading board... Is David Astbury from the Tiges worth a cheeky GOP for GOP trade?

http://www.richmondfc.com.au/player-profile/david-astbury
22, 195cm and 96kg. Plays as a key defender, but an athletic one. Had a shocking injury run since 2011, bit a change of scenery might be the proberbial 'as good as a holiday'...

Adam Simpson, midfield coach.

Get him.

Has he got improvement in him or is he going to stay that way? Have you got any other suggestions from the State leagues that fit the bill: young, 195cm plus, 95kgs or more, decent speed and skills?
* that's a genuine question by the way, I'm to used to the snide craper at SS....

Are you a Warrnambool boy by any chance footymad, as I believe that where he's from originally and you seem to have some form of personal knowledge. Just how much of a flog are we talking.....?

I don't really know of any state players who are defenders.. most promising KPP make their way onto.A list early on.. state leagues rarely produce KPP as opposed to flankers and mid fielders.
I don't see much development in Sully, but I know the reason he isnt on a list already is because of his attitude and lack of professionalism. I'm a Ballarat boy, and knew Sully during his time at the Rebels.
I'd rather an Astbury type. He came through the system around the same time as Sully ( a year or two before) and he's a far better player and person. Had he not been injured so often I'd see him as one of the best young defenders in the Comp. But he's been ruinned by injuries thus far. as far as Sullys flog-o-metre rating he's about an 8 out 10. Rude, arrogant and lazy. Not the best combo

A roughie who I can see us drafting (who we looked at last year) is Hayden Walters from East Point in the Ballarat Football League. He's a 20year old inside mid who can also go forward and kick goals.
Has a massive workrate and a ready to go frame (187cm 90kg) was recently named BOG in interleague round. I'd be very surprised if we don't give him a chance to train with us this year. Could seriously be anything. IMO he'd offer more than Seb Ross having watched Walters beat the likes of he, Aylett (gws) and Jake Melshkam through out his junior days. And a ripping lad from humble beginnings.

You're the third bloke today to suggest Astbury to me. 195cm, 96kgs, only 22. I remember him doing a decent job on one Nick Riewoldt.

Yes thanks.

On Richmond, is Ben Griffiths worth a (VERY) low pick or spud swap?

Pretty high draft pick back when, and highly rated once upon a time. Very cruel run with injury; 21, 200cm, 104kg

From richmondfc.com.au:
Griffiths, who started out as a key forward, reinvigorated his career by playing nine games as a key defender in 2012. Took on some of the game's best forwards and held his own on many occasions, and also thrilled the fans with some booming kicks out of the backline.

I've not got the patience to go back that far. Positively or no?

He's a very big lad. And from memory a decent mover for that. A Richmond supporter mate of mine used to talk about his imminent returns to the Seniors like it was the Second Coming...

Hmm Griffen has a bit of young spud about him, the problem is with these guys is that all the bargaining power lues with the other clubs as we are in demand of something which is scarce.. see WCE wanting well overs for Brown. I think getting Mitch Brown to fill the whole while we develop a young backman is our safest and most likely bet.

Some were positive, I think he could develop into a nice Tall Defender/Forward swing man, Would be a player that could play on the resting rucks for sure IMO.

Had a look over on the Richmond board, and the consensus there is that he is being destroyed/wasted as a KPD, and is a natural FF/CHF with a cannon on his leg. Contracted to the end of this year, and seemingly likely to gwt the chop. a worthwhile preseason pick-up to me. Can't offer any less than Maister right now, and handy if we miss on Boyd.

Hey lads, just want to bring some enjoyment to our depressing season by looking forward to this years draft.
These are the top 5 prospects in no particular order, as the season goes on I'll add video of the top 30 so we can have some healthy debate.
My top 5 at this point in time.
Tom Boyd KPP

A further response to my search:
Not that I'd want to lose him, but Jack Frost has the potential to be a gun defender. Is listed as 194 cm but is strong as an ox and shows a lot of grit and velocity at the contest. Is currently 21 years old and only played 2 games in the 1's but has shown enough to suggest he could be a very very handy defender.

The only reason I mention him is because we currently have Brown, Reid, Keefe and Goldsack who can all play on the talls and not sure whether he will be able to squeeze into the side in the future.

Worryingly has had significant hip surgery - spent three months in bed - and just did his PCL. Apparently a solid ball of rage though. Thoughts?

They haven't gotten rid of priority picks completely; the Demons might just be terrible enough to be given one.

Just thinking back to how we got our 2009-11 team; it won't be possible to build a team that same way.
2 priority picks from 2000-02
2 #1 overalls and 2 #2 overalls and a #5 overall all in the same 3yr period.
Some success in later rounds, Montagna, Fisher, Gwilt.
Trades that brought in useful guys not just duds.
Contributors like Lenny and Blake from previous drafts.

What the Saints could build in 3 drafts and supplement over another 1 or 2 and some trades, would now take 5 or more drafts. That's pretty disheartening.

Great selections, I have left kelly out as I feel he is a little bit outside for our needs. You could say the same about Aish but he is an out and out jet.
Crouch is an interesting one, reminds me very much of a young Greg Williams, not athletically gifted but tough and finds plenty of ball.

Here's Josh Kelly

I just think Kelly's gut running to get the ball is elite. He just really does manage to find the footy and he knows where it will go and that's the one thing I love about him.

What do you think about our 2nd pick? I think it should be around about 21, so I'd go For Kennedy-Harris (love him as a player).

Just passing on what KM said, and like I said he knows his shite. Just look at his mock draft from last year and compare it with how the draft order went. I think he got the top 10 spot on.
He also changed his draft order about 500 times.

With that said, if Boyd keeps his form up, he's going #1, absolutely no doubt about it. Franklin might change things, but I still think they'll take Boyd regardless, because they're packed in the gun midfield department.

But this draft's top 10 had an extremely strong crop of midfielders, and with Hayes' imminent retirement, I think your mob will badly need a replacement. My tip is Matt Crouch ahead of Dunstan.

He is someone that a few of us were talking about last trade draft period as someone that may be worth taking a punt on after we missed out on Brown, but we chose not to and he is now on Collingwood's rookie list, but has looked pretty good from what I've seen of him. Has outrageously good closing speed, for one.

Listed at 90kgs, but looks a fair bit bigger than that. His 'little' brother at the Suns is listed at 102kgs, which looks closer to the mark.

Massive degree of c**t about him (on field) apparently too.

We don't have one. We would need to draft one this year (probably with our 3rd pick)...and then wait for 3 years for him to develop? He ain't going to be a dead set, ready-to-go gun at pick 50.
