The Tippett situation should have never happened. You don't offer to trade a player home at a later stage. You say, we are willing to pay you x dollars for y years. As soon as players start looking for extra money and asks the club to underwrite short falls, that is the moment the club turns around and says "no single player is bigger than the Team, we wsnt you to play with us this is the offer."

Then if the player doesn't come back to thr club in a reasonable time just say we will be looking to trade you.

Put the power of negotiation in the clubs hands not the player. If the club played a straight bat the Tippett fiasco doesn't occur. He might have been traded for unders but he would not have been able to act like a free agent.

Too much of a risk IMO. I've got a dodgy ankle and I'm forever one divot/pothole/momentum change away from an injury (and yes Div 3 Baseball is a similar level of 'eliteness' as AFL).

At that time Tippett had achieved virtually nothing nor was he an early draft pick in his draft so I'd expect there was very little chance of us getting anything anywhere near his true value in terms of compensation from the AFL.

Anyway even now I wouldn't compare him to Ablett.

Not entirely true he'd kicked 55(?) goals in 2009 in his 2nd season and was predicted to become an absolute star of the competition, hence why we were so desperate to keep him. He followed that up in 2010 with 46(?) goals which given how poorly the team performed as a whole was probably an even better performance than the previous year. He was worth a fortune in an open market, and if he'd gone to GCS, they would have probably only paid Ablett more.

Curious as to why you think I'm not serious, as soon as Tippett's camp started asking for side clauses and guaranteed trade clauses, any person of sound mind could see he already had one foot out the door. I think the only reason (IMO) that we agreed to these extras, was Neil being convinced we were so close to a premiership with the squad we had. I can see why he'd think that but for a variety of reasons it didn't happen.

We need to throw EVERYTHING $$$$ at Steven Motlop. He is a serious talent, god knows how he manage to slip to 39 in the AFL draft, operation on shoulders? This kid is only 22 and he's got everything, most importantly desire and work ethic. His potential is huge, could seriously be a top 10 AFL player, he's got more talent in his pinky finger than Eddie Betts has in his whole body, please AFC throw our cheque book at him and get him to sign.

He's out of contract at the end of this year, please god this is the IDEAL player we have been looking for and he fits our age profile, honestly he's worth 600k to us and probably 400k to Geelong right at this moment, that's how good he's going to be. I hope our recruitment managers are looking into this. Money talks.

Why not they have over the last few year brought players in and turfed off their excess fat and traded it back to us for second rounders.

They are better on the trade table than we are, they don't lose players which they want to keep and they have pretty much nailed each of their first round draft picks for the last 5 or 6 years.

The reason I want to put us against their standards is because they are still in essence a medium tier club performance wise. But head to head they outstrip us in almost every fashion.

Yeah this is pretty much perfect.

The flow on effect is we have 700k in the bank to sign players ahead of the 2011 season. Which almost guarantees we could've either kept Bock or put up an even better offer to Davis than we did.

Said the same thing last week, money talks apparently. We lost Bock and Davis due to money, supposedly no issue with the club. This is a good test, we would have more room in our cap than Geelong, let's see if we can entice a player with cash.

Not every player will leave for money. I hope we can lure a player this way though. He might see Geelong as closer to a premiership than us.... and if they win one this year he'll likely stay I reckon.

There is still a more likely than not chance the parties meet in the middle and he stays at the club. But they aren't going to screw themselves over for one player. They drove a hard bargain with Riewoldt as well who is their most important player (but not their best).

We should've done the same with Tippett, it is said with revisionist tendencies. We should've driven a hard line with Gunston and most people that walk out before that. We have people walk out and they all get to their destination. Even the average ones at the time of leaving (Armstrong, Maric & Griffin) got to where they wanted to.

Our drafting is good, it's partially the reason why Adelaide has the most ex-players on other team's lists. It is something wrong once they get to the club which stands out as people wanting to get out, whether we aren't paying enough or some deep cultural things within the club.

TBH I reckon we are closer to a premiership than Richmond. I wouldn't want to emulate "their superior trading" .

No team keeps all their reqiured players forever.

What Collingwood did last year was smart. They traded for picks around their pick and got 3 in a row. That's just smart. 3 bites of the cherry at your 1st round pick! Forget trying for 1 top 10 pick.... you get 3 goes and can go for a tall a small and a mid if the fancy takes you.

We couldn't get Martin in a fit with a Trade because of loss of draft picks, blame the idiot Trigg. that fu cks us. Same goes with Steven Motlop. We are better off aiming our energies at free agency players who we can get. Dale Thomas, Colin Sylvia, Eddie Betts, Xavier Ellis and Buddy are worth our while. End of next season we have trade material. This season we are out.

Pfft you and other posters are looking for a reason to hang your hats on as to why we didn't win a premiership.


Nothing to do with club culture. Everything to do with a poor game plan that doesn't stand up in finals...... Coaching.

Reaching prelims is hardly mediocrity. It's not the ultimate goal. And we shouldn't just settle, but it is no where near being consistently mediocre.
