I doubt any player who doesn't have the mental toughness to overcome homesickness is going to succeed in the AFL. Every player has to overcome setbacks. We have had players go running home to Mummy before but don't remember any of them going on to be champions.
Headland's a great example. He made an ok career out of it, but was never the star that he could've been.
