I doubt any player who doesn't have the mental toughness to overcome homesickness is going to succeed in the AFL. Every player has to overcome setbacks. We have had players go running home to Mummy before but don't remember any of them going on to be champions.

Headland's a great example. He made an ok career out of it, but was never the star that he could've been.

This my first post. I'm a mad Brisbane member from Melbourne who follows trade rumours/gossip quite closely. Just got something you might find interesting.

Last week (I think it was on this thread) Con Bouliopoulis (a tigers journo) announced on twitter Leppa was leaving days before anybody else. On the money. Today I've been chatting to him and he claims he knows something else thats very interesting.

As Leppa has made it clear, he will do his absolute best to keep all our homesick players and has spent the last few days on the phone talking to them, but IF some still do not want to re-sign he might also have a little plan-b up his sleeve. Package 1 or 2 of them up and send to Richmond for Dustin Martin. Dustin Martin was meant to meet Tigers (Richardson and Hartley) on Monday for a meeting but declined, Tigers have apparently started to get a little cranky with him and he is still very much considering a move away. They don't want to lose him in the PSD and considering Hardwick and Leppas strong relationship a deal could be done to keep both parties happy. It's also well known that Leppa has quite a good relationship with Martin.

The interesting point is (if true) Lions and Tigers have agreed to reach a deal together to keep both clubs happy and to avoid other clubs poaching their players. Whoever wants to leave Brisbane for Vic could be bundled up for Martin who wants out of Richmond.

Surely Leppa would know better then anyone else how much of a risk Dustin is, and if he is worth it. Cause he can bloody well play footy, only have to look at Mondays brownlow results.

I'm not personally stating whether this would be a good idea or not, just wanted to give everyone a little bit of late night reading. Read into Con's statements as you like, but it should be remembered he did announce Leppa as our coach nearly 3 days before mainstream media. All hes saying is Leppa and Hardwick are talking about it and both considering it.

Anyway, I'm glad I'm on BF. I love reading everyone's posts and I love talking Brisbane Lions.

I think that the key factor about us taking Martin is Leppa's knowledge of him as he really is. If we had a different coach I would be much more wary. Given that Leppa has dealt with Martin and would consider taking him suggests Leppa knows the best ways to manage him.

Seems to be quite in the Richmond loop. I'll let everyone know asap if anything happens. Interesting though.
