We may get Adams, but the major problem with this proposal is Geelong get Shaw. We don't want that.

If Shaw is being difficult hold onto him and phase him out over two years. There won't be an extension from us or interest from other clubs after that.

We've got to look after the club's interests and giving Shaw to Geelong is a double blow. If he is getting inflexible, I think we need to do the same.

If Geelong are being fair and willing to offer their first pick, then I don't see that as being "inflexible" by either Cats or Shaw.

It would be inflexible on our behalf if we were offered that but still refused to trade him there. At the end of the day, it's a "mutual" decision by both club and player to "explore" other options. Whilst we hold the cards, we won't hold Shaw to ransom if we are offered a fair price by Geelong, even if they become stronger with his inclusion. I'd expect that we would do the right thing by him.

If Shaw goes to the Cats, we can still take Acres at 15 and trade 11 for Adams. Still a good result.
Its giving Shaw to Geelong that is the sticking point for me - they've managed to prolong their window for an unconsionably long time as it is without us giving them a helping hand.

Swings and roundabouts.

No need to put them over a barrel unnecessarily. Deal in good faith because in the near future, we may be dealing with them again.
They've probably already discussed the deal in principle anyway. I'm sure both sides know where each other is at. I actually think our team has got a lot of deals done with little fuss over the last few years. Hine and Walsh (previously of course) project as pretty reasonable and professional people. I would certainly argue against the "Collingwood are hard to deal with" crowd. I think thats nonsense.

Completely agree there.

Why would we give Shaw to a competitor of ours for a shabby pick? We can get Adams for 11 so pick 15 is neither here nor there.

I'd even tip some money into the deal a la Carlton to Brisbane with Fev.

Otherwise I'd keep him.

We'll get Adams regardless and in this draft pick 15 is likely to become a David Trotter. Absolutely shit trade.

When do we find out whether we get pick 11. Is it during the trade period and then can we trade it? I know Hine likes to have consecutive picks together but I'd be happy to give up one of 10 or 11 if we still have pick 15 up our sleeve

I'm almost certain that we find out once the free agency period is over, including the last 3 days where clubs can match offers, end date is October 21st then. That would give us 4 days to do a deal with pick 11.

I say we trade pick 10 for Adams now and get him before the Cats figure out a way to steal him off us.

If they offer their 1st pick, they can't do much else, unless they trade a player rated better than pick 15. With their retirements this year, I can't see that happening.Their next pick would be in the 30's. If that was offered, then we should rightfully tell them to GTFO

I am quite sure we haven't gone to the Ross Lyon school of trading.

Shaw won't be at Collingwood next year what we have to ensure though is that we get the best deal for ourselves.

I was under the impression Shaw was contracted and Ball wasn't. That was the failure of Ross Lyon - bargaining hard when you didn't have the player contracted.

I believe it is closer to here than there IMO.

Like Scodog said, we won't be taking the Ross Lyon school of thought, despite Shaw being contracted. If Geelong play ball, we will honour an agreement. If they don't, we won't send him there, simple.

I agree. Geelong are in no position to secure both Adams and Shaw which is why I believe they won't get Adams and he will land with us simply because of all the bargaining chips we hold over them.

I think Ross failed well before that, running his player into the ground through encouraging him to play through injuries and then telling him he faced being superceded in the pivot with less game time because he was slowing (because of playing injured) is hardly the way to treat an ex captain and hope to retain his services.

As you reap. . .

Spicey I'm not going to get drawn into it. All I'll say is that if Geelong make a suitable offer (which 15 is) we'll take it.

This idea of Geelong stealing Adams is just utter nonsense. Adams wants to come to us, GWS wants him to come to us and we want him. Only Geelong people are enmeshing this with Shaw but there is no relation whatever between the 2 trades.

We are getting ripped badly in this trade - presumably pick 15 - given the draft is relatively weak outside the top 5 or so. We'd be better off holding him and hoping he straightens out than giving a high possession rebounder to Geelong of all people.

I can see your weighted argument but IMO, I just can't see us holding out if Geelong offer a suitable deal ala pick 15 which I think is reasonable.

At the end of the day, Shaw's manager has made it publicly clear his client will nominate a club whereby they are aware that a deal can be done smoothly. If there is even a hint that the Cats can't get the deal done, they won't choose Geelong and IMO, with a 4yr offer on the table from the Cats, they are very keen to play ball and land him.

I'd hold him if the alternative was pick 15 in a weak draft and just to deny a competitor a leg up a la Port and Stevens to Collingwood or Sydney and O'Keeffe to Hawthorn.

It's not ideal to openly shop a player then retain them (like Goldsack) but we have to prioritise the club, not Shaw. I realise we aren't happy with Shaw's behaviour, but tipping Shaw out for 15 is just mugging ourselves.

Trouble is we are actively helping Geelong to extend a premiership window that has already been open for far to bloody long
Cats have lost a heap of talent, Corey-Chappy-Pods with a few more very close to the end, I don't see them as a genuine Threat next year, although I've been saying that since 2008 lol.

That would be a bold move OS, if we did that.

Too bold for my liking.

The whole problem with a Geelong trade is that a/. we lose one of the best medium rebound defenders in the game for some unknown quantity at 15 in a weak draft and b/. we give Geelong one of the best medium rebound defenders in the game.

The loss is compounded on both sides of the ledger. A significant loss for us, a significant gain for Geelong and an unknown quantity at pick 15.

They would have to throw in a Varcoe with pick 15 otherwise shove it pussies, we'll keep Heath for the next 2 years! Dont see them offering Varcoe any long term deals so throw him in with pick 15.
Maybe ask for Taylor Hunt as steak knives, could use him as a tagger.

Wow, the Cats fans really don't rate Heath Shaw do they?

I've spoken to a few tonight (via different formats) and they really don't see pick 15 as a fair deal, so their board on here is actually quite accurate, as far as their fans go anyway.

Surely pick 15 isn't that good though, and we aren't going to agree to trade Heath to a top four team unless the give us something of real worth.
